P-51 Mustang to be on display and flying at Great Bend Airfest

P-51 Mustang “Gunfighter”

Larry “Lumpy” Lumpkin started his flying career in 1979. Along with being a pilot for United Airlines, Lumpy handles the flying and tour of Gunfighter, the historic P-51 Mustang plane built in 1945. The warbird was used overseas during World War II and is now operated by the Commemorative Air Force, the largest operator of historic aircraft in the world with roughly 180 aircraft.

Lumpy has been flying the Mustang for 15 years in airshows across the country.

Lumpy and the P-51 Mustang will be at Great Bend Airfest September 28-30.

Lumpy started working with the Commemorative Air Force in 1994, but was not asked to fly a plane until 2000. From that point, it took Lumpy about three years of training to be ready to fly the plane.

Lumpy typically does an 8-10 minute acrobatic routine at the airshows.
