On Monday, Barton County Commission recognized County Health Director Lily Aikings for receiving the Dorothy Woodin Award, given out by the Kansas Public Health Association for outstanding public health nursing services. Janel Rose, Barton County Health Educator, nominated Aikings for the award. She said for the past 31 years Aikings has been a public health leader locally and state wide, starting in public health at Barton County Health Department in 1979. Rose read her nomination for Aikings. Rose reviewed some of the major events that Aikings assisted with in Barton County, including the 1981 flood, emergency and public healthcare following the 2001 Hoisington Tornado, a Hepatitis A outbreak, along with the recent H1N1 virus.
Aikings gave thanks her staff for all their support, along with local hospitals and emergency services.
The Dorothy Woodin Award was presented to Aikings on September 22nd at the Kansas Public Health Association Annual Meeting in Wichita.
