Federal Handout Targets Bus And Truck Safety

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas is getting more than $5 million in federal funds to improve truck and bus safety.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrator Anne S. Ferro made the announcement last week in Goddard.

The grants include nearly $4 million for the Kansas Highway Patrol for a range of highway safety enforcement efforts, including safety audits of new truck and bus companies and inspections of commercial vehicles transporting hazardous materials. The patrol also will strengthen outreach at high schools to teach teens safe driving practices.

An additional $1.1 million will go to the Kansas Department of Revenue to implement an electronic commercial driver’s license testing system designed to prevent fraud.
