Kansas junior forward Thomas Robinson and Missouri senior guard Marcus Denmon were selected for the preseason All-Big 12 basketball team Thursday by the conference’s coaches.
Robinson and Denmon were joined on the first team by preseason Big 12 player of the year Perry Jones of Baylor, guard J’Covan Brown of Texas and forward Khris Middleton of Texas A&M. Iowa State’s Royce White, a transfer from Minnesota, was chosen preseason newcomer of the year, and Oklahoma State freshman LeBryan Nash was the preseason freshman of the year.
Robinson, a 6-foot-10 forward from Washington, D.C., was one of three unanimous picks. His selection marked the sixth straight year that Kansas has placed at least one player on the team and the second unanimous choice for a Jayhawk over that period. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Playing behind the Morris twins, Robinson provided valuable minutes off the bench throughout the 2010-11 season, averaging 7.6 points and 6.4 rebounds in 33 games. Robinson recorded four double-doubles last season and had the second-best field-goal percentage for Kansas at 60.1 percent.
Denmon, a native of Kansas City, received first-team All-Big 12 honors last season after averaging 16.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
KU’s Tyshawn Taylor was among those who made honorable mention.
Others who made honorable mention were White, Nash, Quincy Acy of Baylor, Chris Allen of Iowa State, and Laurence Bowers and Ricardo Ratliffe of Missouri. Bowers tore his ACL and is out for the season.
The most surprising omission from the teams was K-State junior guard Rodney McGruder, who averaged 11.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game last season.
