Suicidal Man Dies After Closing I-70 In Kansas

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – A suicidal man who forced the closing of Interstate 70 near Manhattan after releasing dangerous chemicals in his car has died.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports the man has been identified as a 20-year-old resident of Lawrence. The newspaper says the man died Tuesday at a hospital in Wichita, where he was flown after being decontaminated.

Riley County police and the Kansas Highway Patrol say the man called 911 late Monday asking for a suicide hotline. The call was traced to the side of I-70 near Manhattan.

Officers located the man, but the man told them to stay back because of the chemicals. After several hours of negotiations, a police robot was sent to the vehicle and found the man unresponsive.

The interstate was reopened just after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.
