Still no set game plan for courthouse repairs

For over a year now, there has been discussion on making needed structural repairs to the Barton County Courthouse, but so far not much has been done. Commissioners in December 2017 authorized a structural analysis of the 100-year-old building and discussions have continued about what repairs are needed. Barton County Administrator Phil Hathcock says commissioners have had conversations about where to start on what he called a “laundry list” of different issues that need to be addressed.

Phil Hathcock Audio

Water entering the building from the roof is the priority right now. Hathcock says that hopefully work on those needed repairs will start later this spring or summer.

Phil Hathcock Audio

Those other things include the four outside corners of the structure separating from the center of the building on the fourth floor. There are also plumbing issues in the building that have emerged recently and at some point the county will have to address the buildings aging heating and air system.

Hathcock says the county still doesn’t know how much money all of those repairs will cost. He anticipated that money to make the repairs would come out of the capital improvement fund.

Upgrading technology in Great Bend’s one-to-one school district

Each year, USD 428 in Great Bend makes Chromebook and iPad purchases to replace and upgrade their technology inventory. Being a one-to-one district, every Great Bend student has access to their own computer device. For the most part, kindergarteners and 1st graders use iPads while 2nd through 12th make use of the Chromebooks.

A student’s Chromebook gets replaced every three years, until they graduate when they are allowed to keep their device.

As far as the rest of the timed-out technology, USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton told Board of Education member Don Williams that the tablets are either sold to staff members or recycled.

Khris Thexton Audio

The school board approved the purchase of 1,100 Chromebooks at $303 per unit and 150 iPads at $307.33 per unit. The total cost to the district is $379,399.50.

Great Bend Police and Fire closer to utilizing drone technology

Classes have been taken, certification testing has taken place, and now the Great Bend Police and Fire Departments are getting close to having a drone available for use by the respective departments. Great Bend Police Chief David Bailey and Lieutenant Heather Smith along with Chief Luke McCormick and firefighter Mike Smith from the Fire Department are now certified to operate a drone after taking classes at Fort Hays State and then passing their certification test in Salina. Smith will head up the drone program at the Police Department.

Heather Smith Audio

Smith envisions the drone being helpful in all facets of police work including missing persons.

Heather Smith Audio

The Great Bend City Council last year authorized funds to purchase a drone for use by both the Police and Fire Departments. For now, the departments will share the drone which Smith says is a good way to operate since most times they are in a mutual aid situation anyway.

Smith says they are in the process of reviewing all the drone options that will include thermal imaging technology. Once that drone is ordered and delivered, both departments will begin to use the drone on an as needed basis.

Marshall leads fight against New York abortion bill

WASHINGTON D.C.-  Wednesday, Dr. Marshall joined Fox News to discuss the recently passed New York law that allows for late-term abortions up until the final minutes before the baby is due.

Congressman Marshall has delivered thousands of babies as an Obstetrician for 25 years and has been outspoken in his belief that this legislation, which legalizes infanticide, is immoral and barbaric.

This week, Congressman Marshall also wrote an op-ed published on FoxNews.com discussing this law in-depth and raising awareness to the serious health risks involved with late-term abortions.

“The late-term abortion process that New York passed into law is inhumane, for both the child and the mother,” Marshall wrote.“The further along in a pregnancy, the more risk from complications come with an abortion procedure.

New York’s bill, the Reproductive Health Act, was signed into law on January 22nd.

“New York’s law demonstrates a complete disregard for life and medical standards that should be strongly condemned by all physician organizations and all Americans,” Marshall wrote.

E-rate funding helps on internet costs again for USD 428

At the beginning of the school year, USD 428’s technology director Ryan Axman said the Great Bend school district has progressed into a technology-rich school system over the past 20 years. Axman felt the administration and school board advocate technology advancement. Those statements were proven correct this week as the USD 428 Board of Education approved a federal funding assistance program to help pay for internet and internet infrastructure updates.

Superintendent Khris Thexton says the school will take advantage of the E-rate funding again.

Khris Thexton Audio

The E-rate funding covers 80 percent of the cost for the district’s internet for the school year.

Along with the internet expense from Nex-Tech Wireless and Nex-Tech, Network Computer Solutions (NCS) from St. George, Kansas will upgrade the district’s internet infrastructure this summer.

Khris Thexton Audio

The 2019-2020 E-rate funding requests were going to cost $40,998.40 for the Wide Area Network from Nex-Tech Wireless, $8,700 for internet from Nex-Tech, and $182,784.25 for the cable and switches infrastructure upgrade from NCS. Total expense is $232,472.65. Thanks to the federal assistance of 80 percent coverage, the expense to USD 428 is reduced to $46,494.53.
