Sunflower Diversified enhances efforts to support local communities

Jon Prescott, standing far left, raises awareness about Sunflower Diversified Services at a luncheon in Stafford. As Sunflower’s executive director, Prescott talked about services, recycling and transportation. Standing far right is Julie Lyon, Sunflower board member and Stafford mayor.

Sunflower Diversified Services has a long history of community involvement but the non-profit agency has stepped up its game in recent months.

“We are really getting out more into each of the five counties we serve,” said Connie Oetken, Sunflower director of development. “Our main goal is to give back to all the communities that have given so much to Sunflower and the people we serve.”

“We also want to raise awareness about the many services we offer, while interacting with long-time supporters and making new friends.”

Sunflower serves infants, toddlers and adults with intellectual disabilities and delays in Barton, Pawnee, Rice, Rush and Stafford counties.

Some examples of the events and causes that Sunflower supports include: Rush Center’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration; Eagle Radio Home Show; auctions for CASA, Barton Community College Foundation and Family Crisis Center; D.A.R.E. program; Hoisington Labor Day Parade; Larned State Theatre movies; Chamber of Commerce Coffees in Great Bend, Hoisington, Ellinwood and Larned; Fair on the Square in Lyons; and Great Bend Airfest. For the first time, Sunflower will participate in the Hoisington EMS barbecue on May 23.

In addition, Sunflower sponsors its Pancake Feed, Charity Gala and Krispy Kreme sales; agency representatives also speak to civic groups.

“Staff and clients volunteer to help support these activities,” Oetken said. “While some occur during business hours, the vast majority are after hours and on weekends.”

“This is a great illustration of how much Sunflower cares for its communities. Staff and clients don’t have to do these things; they choose to do these things.”

Sunflower’s Board of Directors and Foundation Board of Trustees also pitch in at many events.

“While we hope we are helping our communities, we also see the benefits to clients who participate in local activities,” Oetken commented. “Clients have so much fun being out and about, and interacting with their neighbors.”

Any organization that wants to include Sunflower in its community activity is encouraged to contact Oetken by calling 620-792-1325.

Sunflower is in its 53rd year.

Sens. Moran, Roberts & Rep. Marshall introduce legislation honoring fallen Big Red One soldiers

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) Thursday introduced legislation honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our nation in the Army’s First Infantry Division. This bill authorizes these fallen soldiers’ names to be added to the First Division Monument located on White House grounds in Washington, D.C. The First Infantry Division was established in 1917 and has been on continuous active duty for more than 100 years. U.S. Representative Roger Marshall (KS-01) today introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.

“For over 100 years, soldiers of the Big Red One have been tasked with the mission and carried the burden that comes with making certain our great nation remains free,” said Sen. Moran. “I am pleased to introduce this legislation with Sen. Roberts and Rep. Marshall that will formally recognize and honor all fallen Big Red One soldiers at the monument that memorializes their sacrifice. As President Calvin Coolidge stated during his speech at the memorial’s dedication ceremony in 1924, ‘We raise monuments to testify to the honor in which we hold men for the work they have done, and to be a constant reminder to ourselves and future generations of the lessons their actions have taught us.’ There is no group more worthy of being honored than those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation, and I am proud to represent Fort Riley and work with the Society of the First Division on this effort.”

“The Fighting First are the true guardians of America’s freedoms,” said Sen. Roberts. “We must honor and remember the brave men and women of the Big Red One who in placing duty first, have paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

“It is my great honor to introduce legislation with Sen. Moran and Sen. Roberts that will remember the more than 13,000 soldiers of the First Infantry Division that made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for our country,” said Rep. Marshall. “Freedom isn’t free, and this legislation is a great reminder of that. I am both humbled and proud to recognize these service members on this historic monument at the White House.”

The First Division Monument was developed by the Society of the First Division to honor the heroic efforts of those who fought in World War I. Additions have since been made to commemorate soldiers from the First Infantry Division who lost their lives in World War II, the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. Future additions will honor members of the First Infantry Division killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and future U.S. operations.

Local students named to fall 2018 Deans Honor Roll at FHSU

Sheriff: 2 Ellsworth Co. suspects arrested for alleged kidnapping, robbery

ELLIS COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspect following a aggravated robbery in Ellis County.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Hays dispatch was notified of an aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and aggravated kidnapping that occurred in the 1300 block of Spring Hill Road in Ellis County, according to a media release.

Deputies identified the victim as a 20-year-old Hays man who was walking in the southwest area of Hays when a male acquaintance offered him a ride.

After accepting the ride, the victim was intentionally driven into the county against his will. Another male emerged from the truck of the vehicle, through the back seat, and robbed the victim at gunpoint. After robbing the victim of $1,800 in cash, as well as personal belongings, the victim was forced to jump from the moving vehicle, causing him minor injury.

Ellis County Sheriff’s Office detectives have identified and arrested two Ellsworth County men in connection to the incident.  Authorities have not released the name of the alleged victim or the suspects.
