Sens. Moran, Daines introduce Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Steve Daines (R-Mont.) – members of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs – introduced the Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act. This legislation would clarify in a technical amendment that the definition of “employers” in the National Labor Relations Act excludes federally-recognized tribal governmental employers on tribally-owned land alongside other governmental employers.

“It is time to correct a decade-old error made by the National Labor Relations Board and once again allow tribal governments, elected by their members, to possess the right to make informed decisions on behalf of those they represent,” said Sen. Moran. “This sensible and narrow bill amends the National Labor Relations Act to exempt tribally-owned entities operated on tribally-owned lands from the NLRB and is supported by more than 160 Indian tribes and tribal corporations. The Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act would rightfully restore the sovereign status of tribal governments, and I will continue working with my colleagues to get this bill to the president’s desk.”

“For far too long, the federal government has infringed on the rights of our tribes in Montana. It’s time the government gets out of the way, and empowers tribes to determine their own destiny and create good-paying jobs for their citizens,” Sen. Daines said.

This legislation is also cosponsored by U.S. Senators Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), James Risch (R-Idaho), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) and John Thune (R-S.D.).

Full text of the bill can be found here.

Items to Note:

  • In February 2017, the Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act passed the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.
  • In September 2017, the United States House of Representatives passed the Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act.

Boys State of Kansas Leadership Academy taking applications for 2019 session

January 28, 2019 — The American Legion Boys State of Kansas Leadership Academy is now taking applications for its 2019 session. The event, which will be in its 82nd year, will be held Sunday, June 2, through Friday, June 7, at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

The ALBSKLA is for young men who will enter their senior year of high school in the fall of 2019. It provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

At a minimum, applicants should be in the top half of their high school class and be involved in extracurricular activities in their school and community. Potential delegates can also be nominated to attend by their high school counselor or other influential people in their lives.

The cost to attend the Boys State of Kansas program is $325; however, in many instances, sponsors pay for the majority of the fees, with the delegate or his family paying a $50 applicant fee. Those wishing to apply to the program should visit https://kansasboysstate.com/ to fill out an application, which are due by Tuesday, April 30, along with the fees to guarantee a spot in the program.

Potential sponsors, such as American Legion posts, civic organizations, businesses, clubs and interested individuals, or those with questions, should contact Troy Fowler, ALBSKLA director of operations, at troy.fowler@ksbstate.org.

New ownership and name change at Becker Tire

Becker Tire Retail in Great Bend has switched ownership, and now the store located at 904 Washington Street is known as Best-One Tire & Service. Best-One now has eight locations in Kansas, including the Great Bend store.

Manager Jesse Defenbaugh says the same staff is intact, some with different roles, and being part of larger company has made a positive impact.

Jesse Defenbaugh Audio

Best-One officially took over ownership of Becker Tire June 1, 2018. Defenbaugh says the transition, getting new signage, and rebranding the store took some time to make sure they were ready to properly take care of the customers.

Defenbaugh says the switch to the big-chain company means lower prices for customers.

Jesse Defenbaugh Audio

Best-One started in 1971 and now has 23 locations through Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Missouri. The Kansas locations include: Great Bend, McPherson, Salina, Liberal, Wichita, El Dorado, Ark City, and Augusta.

A ribbon cutting from the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce will happen Wednesday, January 30 at 8 a.m.
