Ellis County man pleads not guilty to sex assault charge

By JONATHAN ZWEYGARDT

ELLIS COUNTY– A Hays man charged with sexually assaulting an 18 year-old woman last November in Hays has pleaded not guilty to a pair of sex crimes.

Gonzales -photo Ellis Co.

In November 2017, the victim told Hays Police that Hunter Gonzales allegedly sexually assaulted her between 11:30 p.m. Nov. 13 and 12:04 a.m. Nov. 14.

Gonzales pleaded not guilty to rape and aggravated sodomy Wednesday in Ellis County District Court.

At today’s hearing, Judge Glenn Braun also heard testimony regarding a prior incident involving Gonzales while he was a student at Garden City Community College.

According to that victim’s testimony, Gonzales allegedly exposed his genitals to her in August of 2013.

Judge Braun ruled that the second testimony was admissible in court, as a prior bad act, and will be allowed at trial.

A four-day trial will be scheduled at a later date.

“Carpet process coming along nicely” at Great Bend Events Center

The new carpet and tile is being installed at the Great Bend Events Center, with the carpet portion of the project in the main room wrapping up today. The City of Great Bend continues to upgrade the facility that they took operation of in 2016.

Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes says the carpet process is moving quickly.

Christina Hayes Audio

Kustom Floor Designs was chosen by the Council to handle the carpet and tile project for $99,000. Along with the carpet, a 12-foot outline of tile will surround the main room for easy cleanup from drinks and bars at events.

The old carpet was in place since the 1970s. Asbestos was removed in the glue underneath the tile of the old dance floor. ACM Removal took the asbestos out earlier this month. A portable dance floor is now available at the Events Center for parties that want to change the location of the dancing area.

Since 2016, Great Bend has also repainted a portion of the Events Center, ordered new chairs, constructed offices for the Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau, and repaved a section of the parking lot.
