Terra Dawn Davis

Terra Dawn Davis, 44, La Crosse, Kansas, died Friday, November 22, 2019, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas.

Terra was born March 25, 1975, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas and Sheila (Scheck) Koerner.  She was a 10 year resident of La Crosse, Kansas, moving there from Palisade, Nebraska.  A 1993 graduate of Great Bend High School, Great Bend, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a former member of the Palisade Fire Department, Palisade, Nebraska.

On November 9, 1996, she married Heath Davis at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend, Kansas.

Survivors include:  her husband, Heath Davis, La Crosse, Kansas; her son, Tyler Davis, La Crosse, Kansas; her daughter, Skylar Davis, Russell, Kansas; her father and step mother, Thomas “Tom” and Judy Koerner, Hays, Kansas; one brother, Scott Koerner (Vicki), Branson, Missouri; and one sister, Cristee Torres (Jesse), Great Bend, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Sheila (Scheck) Koerner.

Visitation will be Monday, November 25, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Tuesday, November 26, 2019, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Father Stephen Dabanka officiating.  Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Great Bend, Kansas.

Rebecca “Becky” Wornkey

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Rebecca “Becky” Wornkey, 67, passed away Nov. 18, 2019, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.  She was born Aug. 1, 1952, in Hoisington, the daughter of Gilbert J. and Joyce M. (Burkhart) Sander.  Becky married Steven Ray Wornkey Sept. 5, 1975, in Great Bend.  He survives.

Becky, a lifetime resident of Barton County, was currently a homemaker, retiring from Holiday Inn, Great Bend, as the sales and catering manager, and previously worked as a hostess at Kiowa Kitchen.  She was of the Catholic faith and enjoyed Bingo, casinos and music.

Survivors include, husband, Steven Ray Wornkey, Sr. of the home; four sons, Shawn Wornkey and husband Mitch of Raleigh, N.C., Steven Ray Wornkey, Jr. of Great Bend, Alan Lee Wornkey and wife Sheri of Great Bend and Chad Dale Wornkey of Great Bend; four sisters, Sharon Fox of Manchester, Mo., Debbie Shank of Hays, Shirley Tomlin of Great Bend and Connie Sander of Black Hawk, Colo; four grandchildren, Blake Stevens Wornkey, Dylan Dakota Wornkey,  Heaven Marie Wornkey and Nicholas Ray Wornkey.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert J. and Joyce M. Sander; one son, Darren Robert Wornkey; one brother, James Sander; and by one sister, Patricia Michael.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019, at First Assembly of God, Great Bend, with Pastor Don Paden presiding.  Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.  Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Memorials may be given to the Rebecca Sue Wornkey Memorial Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Helen M. Stos

Dateline – Olmitz

Helen M. Stos, 95, died November 14, 2019, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born January 26, 1924, the daughter of Antone and Eleanor (Mauler) Budig.

On May 18, 1943, she married Leonard Valentine Stos in Great Bend, Kansas.

Helen was a farmer’s wife, helping on the family farm alongside her husband until his death on March 15, 2001.

She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was skilled in woodworking, building closets for her home, and refinishing wood furniture.  She loved all types of crafts, she could crochet, sew, decoupage, and needlepoint on plastic canvas. She was also an excellent baker, making many wedding cakes and birthday cakes.  Helen also had a passion for raising white German shepherds and black toy poodles.

Survivors include her five children; Leonard “Butch” Stos and wife Kim of Otis, Karolyn Schaffer and husband Charles of La Crosse, Debra Stos of Newton, Randy Stos and wife Heather of Hoisington, and Tim Stos and wife Lynette of Olmitz; four siblings, Katherine McGrath of Pleasanthill, California, Lenora Hutton of Derby, Bernard “Barney” Budig of Antcock, California, and Beatrice Axman of Olmitz; 7 grandchildren and 3 step grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 6 step great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Arthur, Richard, and Eugene Budig, and sisters, Irene Sanders and Esther Saling.

Friends may call 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.

Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz, with Vigil and Rosary to begin at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 18, 2019, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz, celebrated by Father Anselm Eke.  Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery, Olmitz.

T. Aileen Oliverius

GREAT BEND – T. Aileen Oliverius, 95, passed away November 12, 2019, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend. She was born on June 15, 1924, in rural Barton County to Julius A. & Tillie (Courange) Reif. She married James Melvin Oliverius on October 2, 1946, at Hoisington.  He died on October 3, 2015.

A Great Bend resident since 1984 coming from Rock Ledge, Florida, Aileen was an audit clerk and bookkeeper for Florida Power and Light.

Survivors include, one sister, Norma Ann Round of Weslaco, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Ethel Hickey and Lorraine Younger.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, November 18, 2019, at Fairview Cemetery in Galatia with Father Louis Dinh Hoang presiding.

Barbara Jean Nolte

Dateline – Hoisington

Barbara Jean Nolte, 76, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2019 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was born July 31, 1943, in Hoisington, the daughter of Armin F. and Isabelle (Karst) Deutsch. She was united in marriage to Roy Nolte on November 21, 1965, in Hoisington.

Barbara was a lifetime resident of Hoisington and Susank area. She was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church and the LWML. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include husband Roy of the home; son Gary Nolte and wife Christina of Wamego; two daughters Christy Henry and husband Kris of Gardner and Cindy Wilborn and husband Brian of Hoisington; mother Isabelle Deutsch Dumler of Hoisington; brother Mel Deutsch and wife Diana of Lawrence; sister Jolene Hindman and husband Paul of Claflin; eight grandchildren Hannah (Colton) Lagerman, Madison, Nolan Wilborn, Tyler and Marly Henry, Charlie, Isabelle, and Jack Nolte, She was preceded in death by her father Armin Deutsch and brother Ronald Deutsch.

Visitation will be Wednesday, November 13, 2019 from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm with family present 6-7 pm with prayer service at 7:00 pm, at Nicholson-Rick Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10:30 am Thursday November 14, 2019, at Concordia Lutheran Church with Rev Gary Wolf officiating. Burial will follow at St John Lutheran Cemetery in Susank.

Joseph A. “Joe” Messersmith

Joseph A. “Joe” Messersmith, age 72 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Saturday morning, November 9, 2019 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. Joe was born on March 12, 1947 at Great Bend to Joe and Edith (Galliart) Messersmith, and also was raised by a step-father, Bill Galliart. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, he worked at various companies in the Great Bend area, including in the oilfield, the Packing Plant, and St. Rose Hospital among others. Joe was united in marriage to Judith Maier in Great Bend – they later divorced but remained close friends. He later married Marsha Hughes – they later divorced and also remained friends. Joe was a member of Argonne American Legion Post 180 of Great Bend, Kansas, and a member of First Street Church of God at Hoisington, Kansas. He enjoyed doing yardwork, barbecue, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Joseph “Jody” (and his wife, Nicole) Messersmith of Great Bend, Kansas; two daughters: Candice “Candi” (and her husband, Kevin) Wilson of Hutchinson, Kansas and Melissa Messersmith of Great Bend, Kansas; 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; his nephew, Maurice Ritchie of Pawnee Rock, Kansas. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and step-father; one sister Theresa Ritchie and one brother Gary Galliart.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Rev. Richard E. “Dick” Ogle officiating. Cremation will follow. Karla J. Neiman

Dateline – Hoisington

Karla J. Neiman, 56, died November 6, 2019, at Salina Regional Health Center.  She was born May 22, 1963, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Sylvester and Shirley Ann (Smith) Straub.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Karla worked in her early years at Great Bend Packing, and also managed her family’s business, Great Bend Gymnastics. She then went on to work at Fuller Brush for several years before starting at Coastal Mart, in Hoisington. It was here she found her niche and worked for twenty years, through several ownership changes, as Bird Express and finally CERVS, in both Hoisington and Great Bend.  She was a great manager and had many employees that worked for her for many years and she loved to interact with the customers, making many lifelong friends.  Her greatest love though was her family and especially her grandchildren.

On January 21, 1981, she married Jimmy Roat. They were married for many years before divorcing in 2005. She then married Mike E. Neiman, the love of her life, on March 22, 2008. They were married in Chase, Kansas, by her brother Pastor Larry Weatherman.

She is survived by her husband Mike Neiman of the home; son, Jesse Roat and companion Brittany Van Sycoc of Hoisington; daughter, Kayla Godfrey and husband James of Hoisington; stepchildren, Rachel Dove and husband Trent and Michael J. Neiman and wife Alicia, all of Great Bend; three siblings; and 10 grandchildren, Preston and Adley Roat, Klara and Jayda Godfrey, Justin Dennis, Braydon and Treyton Dove, and Matthew, Andrew, and Zachary Neiman; and her fur babies, Twinkie and Sadie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, a son, Travis Roat; and her beloved dog, Fancy.

Friends may call Sunday 1-5 p.m., and Monday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 12, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Denny Lewis presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington City Cemetery.

James Lawrence Newton

James Newton

James Lawrence Newton, 79, of Ellis, Kan., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, at his home.

He was born Oct. 12, 1940, in Stafford, Kan., to Ralph Newton and Belva (Bealby) Newton.

On June 11, 1966, he married Elizabeth A. Schuster in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ellis.

James graduated from Codell High School and worked in the oilfield a majority of his life. He was an avid KU Jayhawks fan, NASCAR fanatic, and loved anything on television.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Ellis; one daughter, Pamela of Ellis; three sons, Randy Newton and Eric Newton both of Hays; Ryan Newton of Wichita; pet dog, Jack.

James is preceded in death by his parents, a stepfather, Robert Vonfeldt; a half sister, Carla (Vonfeldt) Detherage; and a niece, Lori Francis.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 8, 2019, at 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a parish rosary service at 7 p.m. at Keithley Funeral Chapel in Ellis.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice – Hays Medical Center, Cancer Council of Ellis County, or St. Mary’s Church.

Paul E. Maneth

GREAT BEND – Paul E. Maneth, 82, passed away November 4, 2019, at his home in Great Bend. He was born on October 30, 1937, in Great Bend, to William Leo & Mary Teresa (Mauler) Maneth. He married Theodora Ann “Teddi” Hoffmann on August 1, 1964 at Great Bend. She died on October 10, 2012. He then married Mary Helen Kummer on July 24, 2015. She died on December 10, 2015.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Paul worked for Barton Community College for 29 years, starting as a counselor in 1970, and retiring as the Dean of Academic Affairs in 1999. He continued his professional career as a real estate agent for Keller Real Estate retiring in 2011. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Golden Belt Woodcarvers, being a three time State Fair blue ribbon winner.  Paul served on the Board of Directors for Barton Community College Foundation, Barton County Historical Society and Great Bend Kiwanis Club, and served on the Board of Trustees for Barton Community College. Paul honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1957-1959.

Paul enjoyed world travel, which took him to France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Israel, Jordan, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Vietnam.

Survivors include, one son, Don Maneth and wife Tatiane of San Diego, CA; one daughter, Anne Marie Higgins and husband LTC Sean (Ret.) of Owensboro, KY; two brothers, Larry Maneth and wife Karel of Salina, and Ron Maneth and wife Janet of Great Bend; one sister-in-law, Kay Maneth of Great Bend; ten grandchildren, Brett Ellis, Preston Higgins, Ashlyn Higgins, Caitlin Morrow, Molly Higgins, Collin Higgins, Brendan Higgins, Isabel Higgins, Jack Higgins and Chloe Maneth; and six great grandchildren, Charlotte, Benson, Titus, Nyla Cate, Emma Grace and Teddy Neil. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Bill Maneth.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, November 7, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil service with rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 8, 2019, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials have been suggested to the Golden Belt Community Foundation to benefit Holy Family School, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Lester H. Ideker, Sr.

Lester H. Ideker, Sr., 103, La Crosse, Kansas, died Saturday, November 2, 2019, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Mr. Ideker was born December 13, 1915, on the family farm in rural Rozel, Kansas, the son of Henry William and Katherine (Both) Ideker.  He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas, and Pawnee County, Kansas.  In 1940, he married Dorothy Blattner and later married Mildred Folkerts. Both marriages ended in divorce. He was a farmer before his retirement.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas.

Mr. Ideker was committed to community service as evidenced by his membership on numerous boards, including Federal Land Bank, Union Coop, Lincoln Township, Hope Lutheran, Pawnee Soil Conservation and Pawnee Watershed and also served as the mayor of Rozel, Kansas. Always interested in conservation, he was instrumental in the construction of numerous dams within the watershed on properties north of Rozel. Following retirement, Mr. Ideker delighted in raising ponies, operating a pony ring and participating with his ponies and wagon in numerous parades and events. Later, he became a resident at Locust Grove Village, where he regarded his caregivers as family.

Survivors include:  one son, Lester “Sonny” Ideker, Jr. (Janel), Alpharetta, Georgia; one daughter, Vergie Anderson (Mark), Kinsley, Kansas; one granddaughter, Ashley Charlton (Joel), Alpharetta, Georgia; and three great grandchildren, Hunter, Olivia, and Paloma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Johnny Ray Ideker; one infant daughter, Lisa Kay Ideker; one brother, Vernon Ideker; three sisters, Rosella Smith, Mildred Brauer, and Evelyn Blattner; and two grandchildren, Jason Meckfessel and Brooke Meckfessel.

The family has chosen cremation.

Memorial service will be Friday, November 8, 2019, at 10:30 A.M. at Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas, with Pastor Wayne Baldyga officiating.  Inurnment will be Friday, November 8, 2019, at 1:30 P.M. in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.
