George Leroy Durand

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. – George L. Durand, 89, died July 7, 2016 at Viera Hospital in Melbourne, Fla..  He was born July 16, 1926, in Hoisington, the son of Louis and Anna (Sette) Durand.  George was a 1944 graduate of Hoisington High School and served in World War II with the U.S. Navy 137th Construction Battalion in Okinawa.  He returned to Hoisington and married Glennis Margaret Pflughoeft on July 20, 1947.  For 35 years, George lived in Great Bend and was a master mechanic with Jack Bell & Company, Davis-Childs Chevrolet & Cadillac and Reiter Chevrolet.  After retirement, he worked diligently for Dixon D. Powers and Dillon’s.

George was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and American Legion Argonne Post 180 in Great Bend, a proud supporter and parent of the Argonne Rebels in Great Bend and a survivor of the polio epidemic in 1952.  His passions in life included being a dedicated husband, loving father, supportive grandfather and doting great-grandfather.  He loved the outdoors and using his hands to build and fix things.

Survivors include his wife, Glennis, of the home; two daughters Kathy Hancock and husband Randy of Fort Worth, Texas and Colleen Stevenson of Rockledge, Fla.; six grandchildren Kelly Schmitt and wife Kim of Wichita, Dawn Buhrkuhl and husband Joey of Arlington, Texas, Monica Dow and husband John of Flower Mound, Texas, Tiffany Mansell and husband Shane of Arlington, Texas, Mark Stevenson and wife Michelle of Orlando, Fla., and Michelle Popilek and husband Scott of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and 12 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Durand.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 13th at the Great Bend Cemetery with the Rev. William F. Johnson presiding. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.  Visitation with the family will be available following the service.  Memorials are requested to First Presbyterian Church or American Legion Argonne Post 180, in care of Bryant Funeral Home. DAVID G. RICHARDSON

David G. Richardson, age 69 years, of Albert, Kansas, passed away at his home on Saturday morning, August 6, 2016.   “Dave” was born on October 5, 1946 at Great Bend, Kansas to Harold “Bay” and Georgia (Weiser) Richardson.   He was united in marriage to Teri L. Barr on March 20, 1983 at Apple Valley, California.   The couple lived in Yorba Linda, California prior to moving to Albert in August of 1996.   A self-employed carpenter and cabinetmaker, he owned and operated Dave’s Custom Cabinets in Albert for twenty years.   Dave enjoyed motorcycle riding and spending time with his grandkids.

Survivors include his wife, Teri L. Richardson of Albert, Kansas; one son, Jackson (and his wife, Shayna) Richardson of Albert, Kansas; two daughters:   Dana (and her husband, Bob) Blair of Paradise, California and Sarah Comer (and her companion, Chris Treadwell) of Goddard, Kansas; five grandchildren:   Alison Walker, Khilie McQuade, David Bivens, Seth Richardson, and Dylan Richardson; one brother, Charles (and his wife, Cheryl) Richardson of Great Bend, Kansas and two sisters:   Joyce (and her husband, Richard) Kultgen of Albert, Kansas and Janice Everett of Fort Mohave, California.   Dave was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, his twin Dale Richardson and Jack Richardson.

Robert “Bob” Brack

BrackGarfield – Clarence Robert “Bob” Brack,84, passed away peacefully at home August 3, 2016.

He was born December 4, 1931 in Larned, the son of Clarence Raymond Brack and Esther W. Eikmeier. A lifetime area resident, he was a retired farmer and a rural mail carrier.

He served in the Air Force during the Korean War from 1951-1958. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned and the American Legion, Garfield.

On November 20, 1956 he married Corrine J. Schartz. She survives.

Other survivors include; five daughters; Denise Schrader (Monte), Midland, TX, Lisa Graver (Kent), Great Bend, Joni Geiman (Lonny), Hutchinson, Terri Ryan (Jerry), Russell and Gayle Maltby (Junior), Aline, OK; twelve grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, two great grandchildren; one half-sister, Pat Henderson, Federal Way, WA; one step-sister, Connie Ratliff, Larned; two step-brothers, Dr. William Dickey, Parker, CO and Dr. Gary Dickey, Littleton, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Vigil Service and rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned. Friends may sign the register, 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. Cremation has taken place and Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas with military graveside rites.

Tom W. Van Brimmer

Tom W. Van Brimmer, 82, died August 3, 2016, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born in Hoisington on July 6, 1934, the son of Willis D. and Opal (Sypolt) Van Brimmer. He graduated from Hoisington High School, class of 1952, and later attended Bible College in Oklahoma. Tom was a longtime resident of Hoisington with exception of time in Great Bend and Stockton.

He married Janice Boyce and they later divorced. He then married Christine Bobbitt and they later divorced. On February 13, 1993, he married Karen Jones at the Vine United Methodist Church in Hoisington.

During his youth Tom worked in construction and helped to build powerlines. He was a parts man for Great Bend Auto and Supply in Great Bend and at Roto-Mix in Hoisington. His greatest love was the time he spent at the Great Bend Tribune as a photographer and reporter.

Tom was a member and a trustee of the First United Methodist Church, Hoisington. He was also a member of various service clubs and served as a City Councilman for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Van Brimmer; two sons, Bradley Van Brimmer and companion Fernando Gutierrez of Kansas City, MO, Clayton Duke Van Brimmer of Hoisington; two daughters, Brenda Lancaster and husband Tim of Overland Park, and Robyn Dodge and husband Charles of Hoisington; a stepson, Bill Jones and wife Val of Parker, CO; 15 grandchildren, Tate and Hope Lancaster, Austin, Zander, and Grayson Strandberg, Autumn, Austin, Andrew, Emily, and David Dodge, Trae, Elli, and Tommy Van Brimmer, Madison and Cody Jones.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Janice Van Brimmer, brother, Willis “Billy” Van Brimmer, and sister, Karen Kirkpatrick.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, August 6, 2016, at First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, with Rev. Dr. Reuben Lang’at presiding. Burial will follow at Hoisington Cemetery.
Friends may call noon to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Batchman was a lifetime Barton County resident, living in the Pawnee Rock and Great Bend area.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, south of Albert. She enjoyed horses, and reading science fiction and murder mysteries.

Larned, Kansas – Johnnie L. Collins, 95, passed away July 27, 2016 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born March 6, 1921, in Cleburne, Texas, the daughter of John B. and Murray Stanford Coble. A longtime area resident, she was a Teacher and a Homemaker.

She was a founding member of the Church of Christ in Larned. She was also a member of the African Violet Club, taught Sunday school, and loved roses and KU basketball.

On April 14, 1946 she married Delbert Collins, in Caldwell, Kansas. He passed away January 1, 1983.

Survivors include; three sons, Jay Dee (Karen), Midwest City, Oklahoma, Dan (Sarah), Larned, and Allan, Larned; three brothers, J.D. Coble, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Joe Coble (Barb), Presho, South Dakota and Jack Coble (Rose Mary), Van Alstyne, Texas; a sister, Betty (Gary) Duncan, Geary, Oklahoma; brother-in-law, Leon Fowler, Odessa, Texas; a sister-in-law, Lenore Coble, Rapid City, South Dakota; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; a brother, Jim Coble; a sister, Inez Fowler and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Coble.

Funeral will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Minister Jimmie Keas presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

Bryan E. Laing

Laing, Bryan PhotoLarned – Bryan E. Laing, 60, passed away July 17, 2016, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

He was born June 16, 1956, in Enid, Oklahoma, the son of Larry and Phyllis Depoy Laing. A longtime area resident, he was a carpenter.

He was a member of the Assembly Of God Church, Larned. He loved to fish and ride motorcycles and also served in the United States Army.

On August 15, 2005, he married Kerri A. Broughton in Larned. She passed away March 21, 2016.

Survivors include: two sons, Chris Laing, Topeka, Ryan McQuitty, Burleson, Texas; five daughters, Laree Laing and Shawna Wilder, both of Larned, Chantay Handley, Salina, Elisha Halbert, Caldwell, Rachael Bell, Canadian, Texas; sixteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Jameson McQuitty.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial graveside service will be at 11 a.m., Friday at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Fort Dodge, with Pastor Leroy Lyon presiding.
