Nelson Lee Warren

Rozel –Nelson Lee Warren, 88, passed away May 2, 2016 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned. He was born May 9, 1927 in Pryor, Oklahoma the son of Samuel and Maude Warren. A longtime area resident of Larned, he was a Night Forman/Machinist Welder at Justice Supply Machine Shop in Farmington, NM.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Great Bend, KS and he enjoyed working with and collecting rocks and he loved to paint oil paintings. He was a United States Veteran.

On June 15, 1952 in Great Bend, KS he married Donna M. Thompson. She survives.

Survivors include: three daughters, Mauna Arla Schott, Albuquerque, NM., Shala Ann Bush, Roswell, NM., Doreen Elana Hull, Kingman, AZ. and seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by, a sister, Pauline Myers and two more sisters and nine brothers.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Beckwith Mortuary, PO Box 477, Larned, KS. will be in charge of arrangements

ANTONIO CASTRO SALAZAR

Salazar, Antonio CastroANTONIO  CASTRO  SALAZAR 

          Antonio Castro Salazar, age 51 years of Great Bend, Kansas passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend after a sudden illness.  Antonio was born on April 17, 1965 at Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico to Adolfo Castro Vasquez and Antonia Salazar.  He was united in marriage to Raquel Urias on April 27, 1997 at Santa Ana, California.  He moved with his family to Great Bend, Kansas in July of 2010.  Antonio worked for Red Barn Pet Products in Great Bend, Kansas for the past four years.  Antonio attended the First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend and enjoyed fishing, auto repair, spending time outdoors – but above all else, he loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Raquel Urias Castro of Great Bend, Kansas; two sons:  Rodrigo Antonio Castro and Daniel Castro, both of Great Bend, Kansas and two daughters: Judith Castro and Michelle Castro, both of Great Bend, Kansas; one grandson, Vince Castro; six brothers: Luis, Sylvester, Manuel, Adolfo, Mauricio, and Victor Castro, all of Mexico and one sister, Josefina Castro of Mexico.  Antonio was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Francisco and Lorenzo Castro.

OBITUARY INFORMATION
Bud married Carrie Lee Mermis June 16, 1947 at Gorham, KS. She died April 28, 2002.
Bud was a long time employee of Fina Oil, working as a roughneck, roustabout, and pumper, retiring in 1985. Mr. Pekarek was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1974.
He served during World War II in the Army Air Corps.
Bud was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose, and the V.F.W. Post #3111, both of Great Bend. He had also been previously active in the Bethal District School Board, Holyrood volunteer fire department, Holyrood city council, and served as past post commander of American Legion Post #200, Holyrood. He was known to enjoy pinochle, reading, old westerns, boating and camping at Lake Wilson and Table Rock Lake, and the peaceful tranquility of the outdoors. He devoted his life to helping his family and others.

Evelyn H. Behr, 92, died April 28, 2016, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born April 17, 1924, on the farm North of Ellinwood, the daughter of Frank J. and Mary L. (Frenzl) Huschka.

A longtime Hoisington resident, she was a homemaker. Evelyn was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society.

On, November 28, 1945, she married Norbeith E. Seyfert at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ellinwood. He died June 14, 1948. She then married Francis J. Behr on October 7, 1952, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Francis J. Behr, Hoisington; two sons, Ronald J. Seyfert and wife Karen of Ada, KS, Norman E. Seyfert and wife Jan of Oak Grove, MO; two daughters, Mary Ann Behr of Hoisington and Janice K. “Jan” Nondorf and husband John of Liberal, KS; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Huschka of Loveland, CO; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Norbeith E. Seyfert; parents, Frank and Mary Huschka, and eleven siblings; Frank Huschka, Leonard Huschka, Albert Huschka, Frances Sessler, Marie Doll, Ida Rziha, Martin Huschka, Leona Klein, Edward Huschka, Eugene Huschka, and LeRoy Huschka.

David K. Clapsaddle

David K. Clapsaddle, Larned

David K. Clapsaddle, 81, Larned was born October 9, 1934 in Thayer, KS, son of John and Ida Ethel Peterson Clapsaddle and died April 28, 2016 in Larned, KS. He married Alice Ann Powell on January 2, 1971 in Oswego, Kansas. Graduating from Thayer High School, he obtained an AA from Southwest Baptist University in Boliver, MO. He received a BA from Howard Payne University, Brownwood, TX, a MS from Pittsburg State University, KS, and a PhD from Kansas State University in adult education. His teaching career included Levelland, TX, Diamond, MO, Baxter Springs, KS, Kansas State University, Wichita State University, University of Montana and Barton County Community College. Other career positions included Head Start Director in Ottawa, KS, Director of Education in Southeast Kansas for a community action agency, and Coordinator of Research and Training at Larned State Hospital.

A well-known historian of trans-Mississippi western history, most specifically the Santa Fe Trail, he wrote numerous articles for journals, authored books, and wrote a history of Larned State Hospital. Among his many awards are the U.S. National Park Service 2010 Midwest Region George and Helen Hartzog Award for Outstanding Individual Volunteer Service, the Gregory M. Franzwa Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award of the Santa Fe Trail Association, and the William Chalfont Memorial Award of the Fort Larned Old Guard.

Memberships included Kansas State Historical Society, Santa Fe Trail Association (President of Wet/Dry Routes Chapter of SFTA), Smoky Hill Trail Association, and Kansas State University Alumni Association. He was instrumental in developing Sibley’s Camp, The Little Red House, and Zebulon Pike Plaza in Larned as well as 200 markers identifying notable historical sites in Kansas. A consummate speaker, researcher and author, he was especially pleased with his work in developing the Traveling Trunks Program for school age children in collaboration with Fort Larned National Historical Site.
Survivors include Alice, wife of the home, two sons, Timothy Mark Clapsaddle of Parsons, KS, Paul Anthony Clapsaddle of San Angelo, TX. and a daughter, Jennifer Lou Duncan of Longmont, CO. Preceding him in death was son Jonathon Bruce Clapsaddle, parents, eight siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews.

David chose to have his body donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center for research. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2-4 pm, April 30, in the fellowship hall, First Presbyterian Church, 8th and Morris, Larned. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Fort Larned National Historic Site Old Guard, First Presbyterian Church Youth of Larned, KS, Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Foundation, Larned, KS, Wet/Dry Routes Chapter Marker Fund, all in care of Beckwith Mortuary, Box 477 Larned, KS. She married Ernest James Bucl October 23, 1951 at LaCrosse, Kansas. He died Sept. 14, 2014.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Altar Society, the Monday Evening Club, Timken. She served on the election board, the Bohemian National Cemetery board, church board and was involved in 4-H. She worked at Legleiters and Mammels Grocery Stores, Rex Café, Inez’s Restaurant, as a domestic engineer in many area homes, preparing for auctions and the historical museum. She enjoyed genealogy, playing cards, auctions, antiques, cooking, gardening, reading, bird watching, and nature. She was very family oriented and created many wonderful memories around her kitchen table with family and friends.

Survivors include five children: Loarn Bucl of Sublette, Diana Sunley and her husband Ralph of Great Bend, Craig Bucl and his wife Jody of McPherson, Brad Bucl and his wife Lanna of Hill City, and Bryan Bucl and his wife Chollet of Wichita; one brother, Gary Unrein and his wife Janet of Lincoln, Neb., and one sister, Ruth Slater of Great Bend; thirteen grandchildren: Casper Bucl, Lucas Bucl, Sheldon Bucl, Colby Bucl, Alicia Easlon, Rachel Colby, Jennifer Vratil, Ryan Smith, Lacey Stowers, Emily Bucl, Megan Bucl, Madisyn Bucl, and Makaela Bucl; nineteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by ten siblings, Martina Flax, infant triplets, Rose, Katherine and Elizabeth Unrein, Mary Weber, Edwin Unrein, Marvin Unrein, Mildred Kirmer, James Unrein, and Kenneth Unrein.

Michael Andy Naugle

Garfield – Michael Andy Naugle, 60, passed away April 25, 2016 at his home in Garfield, Kansas.

He was born December 12, 1955 in Great Bend, Kansas; the son of Edward A. and Viola M. Banes Naugle. A lifetime area resident, he was a mechanic and truck driver.

He loved to tinker with engines.

On February 12, 1982 he married Carolyn Grashorn in Larned. She survives.

Other survivors include; a son Tony Naugle (Dawn), Garfield; a daughter Tina Naugle, Salina; a brother, Joseph Naugle (Petra), Oklahoma; three sisters, Alice M. Robinson, Larned, Brenda L. Farmer (Gene), Larned, Wanda G. McKenna (Don), Hutchinson and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by; a brother, Charles Naugle and two sisters, Teresa Humphries and Shirley A. Helms.

Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Garfield Cemetery, with Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Garfield Cemetery.
