Richard Lee Balman

Balman, Richard pibLiberal- Richard Lee Balman, 72, passed away February 17, 2016 at the Kansas Medical Center, Andover, KS.
He was born September 1, 1943 in Great Bend, KS. the son of Glenn E. and Viola L. Spreier Balman. Spending most of his life in Pawnee Co. and his later years in Liberal he was a Grain Elevator Manager.

He loved College Sports, gardening, cooking, playing golf and watching his grandchildren play sports.

On January 2, 1965 in Stratton, CO. he married Anita L. Conrardy. She passed away November 19, 1986. On January 9, 1988 in Larned, KS. he married Sylvia Jane Eckert. She survives.

Survivors include: two sons, Dan (Dixie) Balman, Hays, KS and Rich (Angie) Balman, Olathe, KS.; one daughter, Leslie (Rusty) Coker, Topeka, KS.; two step-sons, Marc Strait, Brooklyn, NY. And Michael Strait, Honolulu, HI.; two brothers, David E. Balman, Larned, KS. and Stanley Balman, Hutchinson, KS.; three sisters, Kay Dutton, Valley, NE., Patricia Watts, Rose Hill, KS., Glenda Gibson, St. James, MO. and twelve Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by, one son, Bradley B. Balman, and one brother, Clyde Balman.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Visitation will be Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with family present from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be at the Larned Cemetery following the service.

James L. ‘Jim’ Lalicker

James L. “Jim” Lalicker, 76, La Crosse, Kansas, died Friday, February 12, 2016, at his home in La Crosse, Kansas.

Mr. Lalicker was born January 10, 1940, in Gage, Oklahoma, the son of Hugh Elwood and Stella Ann (Lamb) Lalicker. He was a resident of La Crosse, Kansas, for 13 years, moving from Hays, Kansas. A 1958 graduate of Gage High School, Gage, Oklahoma, he was an auto mechanic, and auto salesman before his retirement.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas; a life member of VFW Post 9076, Hays, Kansas; a former coach for the Meade REC, Meade, Kansas; and a former boy scout leader in Gage, Oklahoma.

He was a United States Army veteran serving in Iceland during the Vietnam War.

On April 8, 1961, he married Barbara Pace in the State of Washington. They divorced.

On December 5, 1975, he married Judy Kay (Conway) Hammer in Meade, Kansas.

Survivors include: his wife, Judy Kay Lalicker, La Crosse, Kansas; three sons, Robert Alan Lalicker (Amy), Graham, Washington, Jack Lee Lalicker (Laurel), Wellington, Colorado, and Jason Eugene Lalicker (Paula), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; three daughters, Brenda Lalicker, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; Darla Lalicker, Seattle, Washington, and Dianna Kelly, Seattle Washington; 18 grandchildren, Misty Dryden (Doug), Justin Lalicker (Amber), Lacey Bonner (Lucas), Joshua Lalicker, McKenzie Wilkinson, Olivia DeGoy Moreira, Marcus DeGoy Moreira, Mario DeGoy Moreira, Cecilia DeGoy Moreira, Jeffrey, Nucci, Timothy Kelly, Caleb Kelly, Jordan Lalicker, Michael Lalicker, Travis Lalicker, Bethany Lalicker, Channing Smith (Brian), and Mallorie Patrick; 10 great grandchildren; one brother, Larry Jo Lalicker, Gage, Oklahoma; one sister, Donna Jean Lalicker, Gage, Oklahoma, and his former wife, Barbara Jamal, Seattle, Washington.

Fern Ochs Axman

Fern Axman obit photoFern Ochs Axman, 94, died February 14, 2016, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. She was born October 23, 1921, in LaCrosse, Kansas, the daughter of Chester Henry and Ollie V. (Butler) Crotinger. She graduated from Bison High School.

Fern was a homemaker and a seamstress. She loved to play bingo and cross-stich. Fern knitted and crocheted hundreds of scrubbers, dish rags, and baby blankets for family and friends. She was also a big fan of WWE Wrestling and Royals Baseball.

A longtime resident of Hoisington moving to Great Bend in 1998. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington and the V.F. W. Auxiliary #7428.

On October 5, 1941, she married Orland Ochs in Galatia, Kansas. He died April 23, 1959. She then married Sylvester Axman on July 18, 1970 in Hoisington, Kansas. He died July 26, 1970.

Survivors include; a son, Orland Ochs, Jr. of Hoisington; two daughters, Charlotte Schneider and husband Ron of Great Bend, and Linda Bartonek and husband Alan of Salina; six grandchildren, Scott Long and wife Sharron, Mike Long and wife Dana, Shannon Schneider and wife Orleny, Charla Peterman, Dan Bartonek, and Lynae Curtis and husband Greg; and 13 great grandchildren; and 11 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and a daughter, Margaret Long; four brothers, John, Clarence, Alvin, and Ned Crotinger; an infant sister, Maritta Crotinger, and two other sisters, Ruthette Hursch, and Beth Schneider.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with The Reverend Canon Phyllis Flory and Father Ultan Murphy presiding. Burial will follow in the Otis Lutheran Cemetery. Edna L. Gutowski

Edna Gutowski obit photoEdna L. Gutowski, 95, died February 14, 2016, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend, KS. She was born June 4, 1920, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Walter and Esther (Hamm) Barnes.
A longtime resident of Hoisington, Edna was a homemaker and a cook for Maude’s Colonial House Restaurant for many years where she was famous for her pies and bread rolls.

On April 14, 1937, she married Arthur Joseph Dyer. He died June 5, 1961. She then married
Siegfried O. Gutowski on July 8, 1975, at the Hoisington Bible Church parsonage. He died March 9, 2012.

She was a member of the Hoisington Bible Church. Edna was also an avid bowler and belonged to a local league.

She is survived by; five children, Donna Marcellus & husband William of Hoisington, Ernie Dyer and wife Jan of Lawrence, Ed Dyer and wife Nan of Healdton, OK, Marie Johnson and husband Perry of Wellington, CO, Cozetta Muth and husband Steve of Salina; three stepchildren, Angie Gutowski of Wichita, Ilona Caster and husband Mitchell G. of Wichita, Bridget Sanders and husband Frank of Little Rock, AR; 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren; 9 step grandchildren and 14 step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands; a son, Gerald Dyer; three brothers, Harold, Walter, Jr., and Frank Barnes; and a sister, Mary Ellen.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 19, 2016, at the Hoisington Bible Church, with Pastor Gary Clark presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery. She was a senior inspector for Fuller Brush, retiring in 1983 to become the primary caregiver to her husband, Glenn.  Irene was also instrumental in raising funds to bring the first dialysis center to Great Bend, Kansas.

Mrs. Peak was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1966 coming from Chanute, Kansas.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and AARP.

Naida Jeanne Fordyce

Naida Jeanne Fordyce, 84, died February 12, 2016, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood, Kansas. She was born November 20, 1931, in Newton, Kansas, the daughter of Richard Fred and Lulu Marie (Shambaugh) Householter.

She graduated from East High School, Denver, Colorado. Naida worked as a secretary for Bill Daniels Cable Company in Denver, Colorado, helping to build the company in the early years.

On May 21, 1948, she married Donald Eugene Fordyce, in Brighton, Colorado.

Naida and Don then lived in Denver for many years, moving to Carlsbad, New Mexico in the seventies where they lived for about 10 years, before moving to El Paso, Texas. They resided in El Paso for over 30 years, finally moving to Ellinwood to be closer to family. She was a member of the P.E.O. and worked as the church secretary at the churches she attended.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Donald Eugene Fordyce; three children, Scott Fordyce and wife Laura of Devine, Texas, Sharla Durrett and husband Robin of Great Bend, Kansas, Mark Fordyce and wife Kim of Arlington, Texas; a brother, Dwight Householter of Las Vegas, Nevada; a sister, Flo White of Sonoma, California; grandchildren, Melina Fordyce and Ty Fordyce of Tacoma, Washington, Johnathan Durrett of Hoisington, Kansas, Jacob Durrett of Great Bend, Kansas, Mysha Dumois and husband Tim of Dallas, Texas, William Fordyce, II of Euless, Texas; and two great grandchildren, Hudson Dumois and William Fordyce, III.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Keith Householter, and a brother-in-law, Ray White.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, February 20, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church in Hoisington, with Reverend Reuben Lang’at presiding.
