Glenn Jake Brack, 90, died February 1, 2016, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born May 7, 1925, the son of Emanuel H. and Dorothy Thracy (Seidl) Brack.
Glenn graduated from Hoisington High School in 1943 and then served in the United States Navy during WWII.
A lifetime resident of Hoisington, he was a police officer for thirty four years, with twelve years as the Chief of Police for the City of Hoisington, retiring in May of 1987.
Glenn was a member of the Hoisington Bible Church and the American Legion Post #286.
He married Thelma D. Gruber Koeller on August 19, 1957, in Wichita Falls, Texas.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Thelma Brack; a son, Burton Todd Brack, of Salina; a daughter, Breta Markay Nunez; six grandchildren, Kyle Brack, Krystyne Brack, Derrick Brack, Brandon Brack, Justin Nunez, and Jazmin Nunez; and a sister, Eunice Dreher of Great Bend.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Vernon E. Brack, Clarence J. Brack, Alvin Brack, Ralph Brack, and Delmar Brack; and a sister, Margaret Kopke.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 5, 2016, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Pastor Gary Clark presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call 9 to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Kerry Houston Greathouse

Larned – Kerry Houston Greathouse, 69, passed away February 2, 2016, at his home in Larned.

He was born May 3, 1946 in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Rufus Houston and Lily Mae Fortenberry Greathouse. He moved from Alabama in 1956 and served in the United States Navy for 16 years.

He attended the Assembly of God Church in Larned. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding motorcycles.

Survivors include: a daughter, Shila Greathouse, Winfield; a son, Lance Greathouse, Wichita; a girlfriend, Josephine H. Sparks, Larned; two sisters, Joyce Sucht, Wichita, Ann Wilcox, Larned; sister-in-law, Joyce Greathouse, Larned; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents: five brothers, Charles, Caris, Ralph, Jerry and Terry Greathouse and a sister, Barbara Erway.

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Rev. Daryl Riffel presiding. Inurnment of ashes will be held at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth at a later date.

Donna Kay Pivonka

Larned- Donna Kay Pivonka,56, passed away February 1, 2016 at her residence in Larned, KS.

She was born July 28, 1959 in Larned, the daughter of Paul and Ramona Lewis Snodgrass. A lifetime area resident of Larned, she was retired from the Larned State Hospital as a LMHT.

She attended the Rozel United Methodist Church.

On June 5, 1987, she married Brian Pivonka in Larned. He survives.

Survivors include: two daughters, Jessica Snodgrass and significant other James Poe, and Sara Brooke Pivonka; one brother, Jerry Snodgrass; two sisters, Deborah (Jerome) Mangen, Diana Pfeifer and one granddaughter, Amara Poe.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Joe Snodgrass, John Snodgrass and James Snodgrass.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned with Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Visitation will be held Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Memorials may be given to the Pawnee County Humane Society, in care of Beckwith Mortuary, P.O. Earl Lee Steffen

Burdett – Earl Lee Steffen, 88, entered into eternal life January 31, 2016 at the Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore, Kansas.

He was born March 14, 1927 in Hanston, KS, to Walter and Ada (Lee) Steffen. He farmed his entire life in this area.

He married Winn Sanders October 6, 1956 in Great Bend, Kansas.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Burdett, Kansas.

His interests included family, farming, traveling, visiting western art galleries, was an avid reader, and a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.

Earl courageously battled heart disease and Parkinson’s many years without complaint as he struggled to remain physically independent.

Survivors include; his wife of 59 years, Winn; two sons, Bradley and Kerry and one daughter Lana; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Sanders and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by; his parents; a sister, Myrna Webster and a brother Dale.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Burdett with Pastor Brad McCoy presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett, Kansas.

OBITUARY INFORMATION

He began his teaching career at Minneola, Kan., where he met and married Ivy Mae Salmans August 6, 1950 at Minneola, Kansas.  He was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict with the 10th Division Army Band at Fort Riley, Kan. Following discharge from the Army in 1953, he was band director at St. John and Hays schools, and then became instrumental music instructor and golf coach at Barton Community College, Great Bend in 1969. Following his retirement in 1991, he enjoyed delivering vehicles for Marmies.

Mr. Webster was a member of First United Methodist Church and church choir, Lake Barton Golf Club, BCC Prairie Winds Concert Band and Jazz Band, BCC Pit Orchestra, BCC Booster Club, Olde Tyme Towne Band, Dixieland All Stars Band, Great Bend City Band, Great Bend Jazz Festival Committee, all of Great Bend; Kansas Music Educators Association, where he served as past district secretary, district vice president and president, a 65-year member of Music Educators National Conference, charter member and past president of Kansas Bandmasters Association, Phi Beta Mu National Bandmasters Fraternity, Pi Kappa Lambda National Honorary Music Fraternity, University of Kansas Alumni Band, Kansas Czech Band at Wilson, Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity, former Golden Belt Community Concert Association board member, Tau Kappa Epsilon Social Fraternity, former member of National Junior College Coaches Association, and past chairman of the Barton Community College Board of Trustees. In 1987, he was named Outstanding Bandmaster by the Kansas Bandmasters Association. He was inducted into the Barton Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He enjoyed playing trombone in the Ted Smith, Jay Leonard and Eddie Basgall bands, the Barton County Kix Band, The Flatland Big Band, The River Bend Five Dixieland Band, the BCC Prairie Winds Bands and Great Bend City Band and leading his own Jay Bennett Band and Little Big Band.

Survivors include his wife, Ivy Webster, of the home; one son: Marc Webster and his wife Diana of Great Bend; one daughter: Denise Shoff and her husband Dennis of Herington, Kan.; five grandchildren, Alaina Webster-Stoppel and her husband Jon, Christa Morrison and her husband Grady, Erica Webster, D. R. Shoff and Jennifer Fowler and her husband Charlie; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 6, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with the Reverend Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial with military rites by Fort Riley Honor Guard will be at Great Bend Cemetery. He was a graduate of Great Bend High School and Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for a construction company and for Dupont on various projects. He earned his private pilot license, enjoyed playing softball in Seward, and spent time in the Peace Corps in Venezuela and Yemen. He was a farmer and cattle rancher.

Mr. Fanshier loved to read, play pitch and dominoes, fish and was a philosopher. A gentle man, he loved dogs and the outdoors. He was a United States Army veteran.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #646, Great Bend.

Three Nieces, Anita “Tulip” Fanshier of Great Bend, Tracy Fanshier and her husband Lonnie Broce of Great Bend, and Jan Day and her husband of Seabrook, TX; and great-niece, Emma Day.

Donald D. Peterson

Larned – Donald D. Peterson, 81, passed away January 29, 2016, at Via Christi St. Francis Select Specialty, Wichita.

He was born May 22, 1934, in Larned, the son of Eldon A. and Hilda Tina Petersen Peterson. A lifetime area resident, he owned Peterson Electric in Larned.

He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the V.F.W., Kiwanis Club, Peterson Electric Bowling Team and a city council member, all of Larned. He served in the United States Army.

On December 12, 1954, he married Nita Gaye Geil in Albert. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Duayne (Tina) Peterson, Greensboro, N.C. and Bryan (Sarah) Peterson, Highland Ranch, C.O.; a brother, Darryl (Susan) Peterson, Hutchinson; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Lynn Peterson and a grandson, Brandon Taylor Peterson.

Graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2016, at the Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, with Darryl Peterson presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend with military graveside rites.

Hulda Steinert Bitter

Hulda Steinert Bitter, 100, died January 29, 2016, at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas. She was born August 30, 1915, at Galatia, Kansas, the daughter of David H. and Johanna (Kiel) Steinert. Hulda was a lifetime resident of Galatia and Hoisington communities.

She married Daniel Bitter on December 30, 1934, at Susank, Kansas. He passed away June 14, 1988.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Hoisington. Hulda was the last charter member of the Hospital Auxiliary which started in 1958, and a charter member of the Clara Barton Foundation, and also volunteered as a Pink Lady for a number of years. She was a member of R.S.V.P., and started making quilts for World Relief in 1986, these quilts are given to flood and tornado victims, needy families and homeless shelters. She liked flowers and gardening, was a collector of glassware, enjoyed going to auctions and has a collection of scrap books from local happenings since 1936.

Survivors include a son, Daniel L. Bitter and wife Kathy, of Edmond, Okla; five grandchildren, Linda Enders and husband Joe of Eugene, Oregon, Lesli Gillette of Las Vegas, Nevada, Daniel A. Bitter of Edmond, Okla, Tim Bitter and wife Debbie of Choctaw, Okla., and April Hyland of Oklahoma City, Okla., 10 great grandchildren, Steven Enders, Kaitlin, Jonathan, and James Gillette, Kayla, Trentt, and Austin Bitter, Danielle, Julia, and A.J. Hyland; and two great great grandchildren, Bradley Jennings and Kaylee Bitter; a sister, Ada Stremel of Great Bend; and several nieces and nephews, and a son-in-law, Les Shobe of Seal Beach, Calif..

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Daniel, daughter, Lola Shobe; brother, B.V. Steinert; and three sisters, Stella Morgenstern, Elzenna Funk and Lorraine Kitson.
