Larry Lee Klein

Larry Klein obit photoDateline: Hoisington, Kansas

Larry Lee Klein, 55, of Hitschmann, Kansas, died Monday, January 12, 2016, at his home.

Larry was born on February 12, 1960, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Larry and Helen Klein. He grew up and attended school in Hoisington and never strayed far from his Barton County roots.

Larry’s life was a simple one and he enjoyed simple pleasures. A phone call from his precious daughter Larami, or a visit from his dear son Caleb would make his day and he was happiest when talking about his two beloved children. They meant everything to him and his pride in them and love for them was evident in his voice.

Larry was fond of cowboy hats, the larger the better. He appreciated a slightly chilled Keystone, his mom’s good cooking, a pair of broke in boots, well-worn longjohns, and colorful western shirts, the starchier the better.

And trucks. Larry admired trucks and his passion was driving them, the louder the better. He reveled in his work for FedEx and took great delight in traveling around the state of Kansas. Give Larry a warm truck cab, a gallon of coffee, a little country music on the radio, and he could be gone for days.

Finally, Larry loved his parents. He could always count on his mom’s world-class mashed potatoes and giblet gravy and nobody was a better champion for Larry than his dad. Of the seven Klein siblings, Larry was pleased to be the one to share his father’s name and he knew his folks were always in his corner. Larry is with his dad now, surely talking about trucks and the great loves of his life, Larami and Caleb.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Larry was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2630, Odin.
On September 9, 1989, he married Carla Burnette Stoss. They later divorced.

He is survived by his two children, Larami Parsons and husband Tom of Great Bend, Caleb Klein of Great Bend; stepchildren, Shelli Schmidt and husband Travis of Claflin, John Stoss and wife Becky of Dodge City; mother, Helen Klein of Great Bend; siblings, Curtis Klein and wife Betty of Canandian, Texas, Mike Klein and wife Terri of Great Bend, Karen Barrow and husband Ron of Great Bend, Tammy Cushenbery and husband Daryl of Fort Worth, Texas, Robert Klein and Todd Klein and wife Dawn, all of Great Bend; grandchildren, Madison, McKenna, Neeley, Audrie, Lexi, and Blaike.

He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Eugene Klein.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, January 16, 2016, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Dick Ogle presiding. Inurnment will follow in Hoisington City Cemetery. Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.  Cremation has taken place. John Eldon Montgomery

Dateline: Larwence, KS

John Eldon Montgomery, of Lawerence, died Dec. 62, 2015.  For 90 years he blessed those around him with his passion for living.  John was born in Junction City on Aug. 3, 1925, the only child of Chris and Esther Oegerle Montgomery.  John enlisted in the Navy at age 17, prior to his graduation from high school in Junction City in 1943.  He served in the Navy until April 14, 1946, and was the tail gunner on two aircraft carrier dive bombers.  Taking part in such World War II operations as Wake Island, Truk Atoll, Siapan, and Iwo Jima, John experienced 327 carrier take-offs and 326 landings.  At the end of the war, he was in the Philippine Islands, awaiting a possible allied invasion of Japan in a Normandy-like operation.

Following his discharge from the Navy, he attended Kansas State University and Kansas Wesleyan in Salina, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree.  Later he earned his master’s degree from Kansas State University.  John began teaching in Junction City, where he married Patricia Jean Platt in 1954.  They moved first to Limon, Colo., then to Great Bend in 1956, where John taught school at Roosevelt Junior High School until his retirement in 1989.  He took great satisfaction in instructing students in drivers’ education courses and coaching a variety of athletic teams.  In 2005, John and Patricia moved to Lawrence.  Since retiring, John and Patricia enjoyed traveling and spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz., and summers in Estes Park, Colo.

John is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Lawerence; son Steve (Jane), of Spring Hill; daughter Terri Schenkel (Steve), of Great Bend; and son, Chris (Margaret), of Richmond, Va.; as well as seven grandchildren.

John loved sports and reveled in the transformation of his beloved KSU Wildcat football team from doormat to national power.  He and Patricia attended countless spring sporting events and cheered for their children and so many others during their many years in Great Bend.  John’s distinct voice could be heard in the largest crowds.  He watched every pitch of the 2014 post-season run by the Kansas City Royals to the World Series.  John never tired of telling how he sank along putt or chipped in to win a coke from his golfing buddies.  His love of golf was passed down from his father and on to John’s sons and grandsons.  John was an avid reader and never content to accept others’ versions of history.  He did his own research.  John was strong and of an independent mind with clear opinions he would share, sometimes without invitation.  He will be so missed.  Jeezel Peezel!

A visitation will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Rumsey-Yost in Lawerence.  Graveside services will be a Marion Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 4th.  A memorial services will be held at the Great Bend First Congregational United Church of Christ at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 5th.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church/UCC Women’s Fellowship, 3400 21st Street, Great Bend, KS 67530; or to Midland Hospice, 200 S.W.
