Great Bend – Lillian Colyn, 71, passed away December 14, 215 at her home, Great Bend.

She was born September 16, 1944 in Brooklyn, New York; the daughter of Phillip and Frances Galletta. A longtime area resident; she was a Licensed Mental Health Technician at the Larned State Hospital.

She was of the Catholic faith.

On April 26, 2005 she married David Colyn in Pratt, Kansas. He passed away March 23, 2015.

Survivors include; two daughters, Linda Gobin, Andover and Lisa Briley, Hoisington; three brothers, Anthony Galletta, Pennsylvania, Sam Galletta, Springhill, Florida, Phil Galletta, Fort Lauderdale, Florida; two sisters, Mary Depalo, Wellington, Florida and Laura Bavaro, New York, New York; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; her parents, her husband and a brother Louie Galletta.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and American Legion Auxiliary, all of Great Bend. She was active with the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, Great Bend Women’s Bowling Association, Great Bend Women’s Golf Association, Camp Fire Girls, Recreation Baseball and softball coach and Barton Community College Adoptive Parents program.

She then married Paul E. Maneth July 24, 2015 at Great Bend.  A Great Bend resident since 1956, coming from Cunningham, Mary was a Registered Nurse for Russell Clinic, Central Kansas Medical Center and Dominican Sisters’ Convent Infirmary. She instructed classes in nursing for the Association for Continuing Education and Barton Community College.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, Great Bend Cemetery Board, Great Bend Garden Club, Prince of Peace Hospitality Commission, Great Bend Beautification Committee, EHU and PEO, all of Great Bend.

Robert L. Brittain

Robert L. “Bob” Brittain, 84, passed away Dec. 5 surrounded by family.  He was born Jan. 30, 1931 in Shamrock, Okla., the son of Robert and Anna (Ricks) Brittain.  Bob enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country from Oct. 1951 to Sept. 1953.  He was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, at Ladd Field.  He married Velda L. McMahan Jan. 1, 1954 in Cushing, Okla.

Bob and Velda became residents of Great Bend in 1957, after relocating from Tulsa.  During his life, Bob worked for Phillips 66, and graduated from World Wide College of Auctioneering.  Bob and Velda owned and operated Brittains Western Wear for 31 years before retiring.

Survivors include one brother, Orvil Brittain of Griffin, Ga.; three sons, Leon Brittain and his wife Loretta of Great Bend, Randy Brittain of Great Bend, and Rick Brittain and his wife Heidi of Great Bend;  and two grandsons Austin Brittain and Adrian Brittain.  He was preceded in death by his wife Velda, his parents, three sisters and one brother.

A private family service will be held at a later time.

Betty A. Rossman, age 79 years, longtime Albert, Kansas resident, passed away on Sunday evening, December 6, 2015 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend, Kansas.  Betty was born on January 6, 1936 at La Crosse, Kansas to Henry and Mathilda (Heronema) Basgall. She was united in marriage to James J. “Jim” Rossman on June 22, 1953 at La Crosse, Kansas. Betty was a homemaker most of her life, and for 13 years worked outside her home as Custodian at Farmers Bank and Trust in Albert, Kansas. She was a longtime member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz, Kansas, where she was an active member of St. Ann’s Altar Society.  Betty loved to cook for others as well as loved taking care of others.

Survivors include her husband, James J. “Jim” Rossman of Great Bend, Kansas; one son, Verlyn (and his wife, Kathy) Rossman of Albert, Kansas; three daughters:  Dianna (and her husband, Rod) Cushenbery of Albert, Kansas, Tammy Rodie of Phoenix, Arizona, and Illeen Becker of Chandler, Arizona; six grandchildren: April Deines, Jason Rossman, Shawn Helie, Jeffrey Pivonka, and Evan and Cale Cushenbery; six great-grandchildren: Chyanne and Spencer Deines, Brody and Braylin Rossman, and Johanna and Vienna Helie; three brothers:  James (and his wife, Bernice) Basgall of Paradise, California, Edward (and his wife, Shalley) Basgall of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Charles Basgall of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters:  Zita (and her husband, Walter) Zimmerman of Great Bend, Kansas and Leona Gumescheimer of Bazine, Kansas; several nieces and nephews.  Betty was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters (Kathryn Basgall in infancy, Twila Franzmathes, and Theresa Stanley).

Geneva Aurora Samora

Geneva Samora picGeneva Aurora Samora, 91, of Great Bend, formerly of Cherryvale, died Friday, December 4, 2015.
Geneva was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She provided outside of the home, however her love was first and foremost, for her family. She was a nurturer, loved to cook and always was a gracious soul to feed others, making sure everyone was comfortable. She loved plants, big band music and the Catholic religion.

She was born to Matiana and John Castorena, on May 15, 1924, in Buffalo, KS. Geneva was the sixth of seven children, born to Matiana and John.

Geneva grew up during the depression. As a young woman, she worked in the defense industry at Boeing, fulfilling her patriotic duties building ammunition for World War II. She married Arthur Perez in ­­­1945 and had three sons, Paul, Louis, and Phillip Perez. She was widowed in 1952.

She married Ruben Samora on September 5, 1953, and they had seven children. They were members of St. Francis Xavier Church, Cherryvale, KS, St James Parrish, Augusta, Kansas, St. Johns, Hoisington, KS, and All Saints, Wichita, KS.

Geneva raised her family in Augusta, KS from 1956 to 64, then moved to Hoisington, KS in 1968, where they resided until 1982. Her and Ruben lived in Wichita, KS and retired in Cherryvale, KS, where they lived until her husband’s, Ruben’s death in 2008. Geneva resided in Towanda, Ks, then in Great Bend Kansas since 2009.

Other survivors include three sons, Paul Perez, his wife, Cindy, and Louis Perez, his wife Dana of Augusta, Daughter-in law, Judy Samora, Wichita (wife to deceased son, Richard Samora), and Phillip Perez of Wichita; six daughters, Gloria Zorn, her husband, Ed, of Towanda, KS, Anna Pierce, her husband, Al of Hoisington, KS, Vicky Chambers, her husband, Larry of Hoisington, KS, Teresa Wadsworth of Wichita, KS, Mabel Adams, her husband, Nelson, of Hoisington, KS and Rita Burns, her husband, Chris, of Hoisington, KS; thirty grandchildren, forty-seven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren children, and countless lifelong friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Juan and Matiana Castorena, Five brothers; Frank Lopez, Octavio Castorena, Salvador Castorena , John Castorena, and Alfred Castorena, sisters; Phyllis Lopez and Mary Bernal, husband; Ruben Samora; son, Richard Samora, son-in-law; Brian Wadsworth, Great grand-daughter, Paula Perez, Great grandsons: Justin Wade Burns, and Donovon Riojas.
The Rosary/Viewing will be recited Monday, December 7, at 7PM at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, in Hoisington, KS. Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, December 9, at 10:00 AM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Cherryvale, KS, followed by the burial at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery, Cherryvale, KS.
