Clarence Ray Christians, 82, died December 1, 2015, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born on August 26, 1933, on the family farm in rural Hoisington, the son of Chris W. and Stella (Parker) Christians. Clarence graduated from Hoisington High School in 1952.
A lifetime resident of Hoisington, he was a farmer and a stockman, and also worked as a pumper in the oil fields.
Clarence was a member of the former Friends Church of Beaver. He also was a board member of both the Russell Rural Water District #3 and the Union Township Board.
On July 19, 1953, he married Keta Marquis in Beaver, Kansas.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Keta Christians; son, Ray Christians and wife Tina of Hoisington; daughter, Patti Madden and husband Manley of Great Bend; brother, John Christians of Lindsborg; sisters-in law, Carla Christians of Lindsborg and Lenora Christians of Lindsey, Okla.; grandchildren, Brooke Cherven of Cadillac, Mich., Robin Linsner of Hoisington, Justin Christians of Great Bend, and Scott Christians of Hoisington; and 16 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Wayne Lee Christians, and son, Michael Christians; brothers, Albert, Glenn, and Roy Christians; and sisters, Ella Jones, Edna Key, Laura Christians, and an infant sister, Cleo Christians.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Lyle Whiteman presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington City Cemetery. Harlan Dean Maier

Harlan Dean Maier, 76, died November 29, 2015, at Via Christi Hospital, Wichita. He was born October 16, 1939, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Henry and Tabea Esther (Deitz) Maier. Harlan went to a one room grade school in District 69, and later graduated from Otis Rural High School in 1957.
He married Betty Ann Steinert on October 21, 1962 in Milberger. They later divorced. He then married Rebecca J. Humphrey on June 4, 1976. She preceded him in death on September 19, 2015.
Following in the family business he became a butcher, first working for Dietz Meat Processing in Milberger, from 1957 to 1963. Harlan and Betty then owned and operated the H & B Grocery until 1969, when he started working at Town & Country Market in Hoisington until his retirement. He also ran his own mowing business, sometimes mowing until late at night after his work at the grocery store.
Harlan was a former member of the Bender Hill Church, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Galatia, and the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger. After his second marriage he became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hoisington. Harlan was also an avid bowler participating in many leagues.
Harlan was well known for his portrayal of Santa Claus, appearing at many, many, places all over Barton County for over 40 years.
He is survived by a son, Mark Maier and wife Jennifer of Garden City; two stepdaughters, Shelley Riedel and husband Richard of Hoisington, and Tracey Patch of Lenexa; a sister, Shirley Hartwick and husband Stewart of Smolan; and grandchildren, Austin Maier and Drake Maier of Garden City, Jessica Weiss, Jacky Maier of Denver, Jeneva Maier of Great Bend, Kera Riedel of St. George, and Tari and Logan Riedel of Hoisington; and great grandchildren, Jed, and Kiptyn Zeller, and Bentlee Riedel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Monte Maier, his wife Rebecca, a brother Paul, and two grandsons.
Per Harlan’s wishes he has bequeathed his body to The University of Kansas School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., December 4, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church in Hoisington, with Rev. Dr. Reuben Lang’at presiding. Friends may sign the book today and Thursday with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, P.O. Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.

Anita Lynn Spencer

Larned – Anita Lynn Spencer, 61, passed away, November 29, 2015 at her home, Larned.

She was born November 18, 1954 in Peoria, Illinois; the daughter of James Lyle Stout Sr. and Rosella Paxton. A Larned resident for the last 20 years, moving from Nebraska; she was a Paraprofessional for USD #495 school district.

She attended the Sts Mary and Martha Episcopal Church, Larned. Anita loved to quilt.

Survivors include; a daughter, Lucinda Spencer, Colby; a brother, James (Corky) Stout, Larned; two sisters, Susan L. Greenmeyer, Larned and Donna M. Blue Legs, Chadrin, Nebraska and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; her father.

Memorial Service will be 4:00 p.m. Friday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Father Mark Cowell officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Venita May Zink

Larned – Venita May Zink, 80, passed away November 29, 2015, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born February 3, 1935 in Tribune, the daughter of Archie Lee and Hattie Adellia Prosser Clayton. She moved to Larned from Great Bend in 1955, where she was a mental health drug and alcohol counselor at the Larned State Hospital for twenty-five years.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Larned. She enjoyed crafting, quilting, gardening, cooking and loved her family and grandchildren.

On November 4, 1959, she married Clarence Lee Zink, in Larned. He passed away July 12, 1997

Survivors include: two sons, John (Cindy) Zink, Larned and Steven Zink, Kinsley; two daughters, Pamela (Chuck) Twitchell and Kim (Todd) Teegerstrom, both of Larned; three sisters, Mildred Martin, Alva, OK., Leona Rybolt, Eudora, KS and Gail Lynn Miller, Rockvale, CO.; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Shoup; two brothers, Carl and Gaylon Clayton; two sisters, Carol Warren and Shirley Alyward.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Pastor Ryan Webster presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Frank Espinoza

Jetmore – Frank Espinoza, 70, passed away November 26, 2015 at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore.

He was born April 12, 1945, in Phoenix, Arizona, the son of Mike D and Nellie Fimbrez Espinoza. He moved to Kansas from Sacramento, California in 2004, where he was an Associate Transportation Planner for the State of California.

He was of the Catholic faith. He served in the United States Air Force and was a member of the VFW in Dodge City and the American Legion, Jetmore.

On March 6, 2008, he married Sherlyn R. Piper in Jetmore. She survives.

Other survivors include: four sons, Frankie, Michael and Martin Espinoza, all of Sacramento, CA and Mark Espinoza, Clovis, CA; a step son, James Miller, Cimarron; three step daughters, Jennifer Miller, Salina, Leslie Larson, Onalaska, WI and Misti Alexander, Hanston; a brother, Henry Espinoza, Clovis, CA; two sisters, Virginia Mary Bestul and Gloria Espinoza, both of Fresno, CA and numerous grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a step son, Jason Conry and a brother, Michael Patrick Espinoza Jr.

Cremation has taken place and no service is planned at this time.

GWINI C. DELGADO

Gwini C. Delgado, age 64 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Saturday afternoon, November 28, 2015 at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born Gwini Collette Graham on August 27, 1951 at Scott City, Kansas – the second of three girls born to John F. and Elaine Maxine (Shearmire) Graham. The family moved to Great Bend when Gwini was two years old, and from an early age she grew up in the restaurant industry.  She lived in various places until 1975 when she moved back home to Great Bend, where she took on a ready-made family of a father and his three sons.  Gwini was truly Heaven-sent. She and her future husband Frank Delgado had a son Mark Weeser Delgado. After ten years together the couple was married on January 8, 1986 at Winter Park, Colorado.  Gwini was co-founder and owner of Kiowa Kitchen Restaurant at Great Bend, Kansas in 1978. She was a Past Madame President and longtime member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #646 Auxiliary of Great Bend, Kansas. Gwini loved the outdoors and snow skiing, and was an avid fisherman.  She fished the Rocky Mountains from northern Montana to southern Colorado.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Delgado of Great Bend, Kansas; two daughters from previous marriages: Julie A. (and her husband, Robert) Fedosh of Moore, Oklahoma and Dawn D. Buss of McPherson, Kansas; one son, Mark W. (and his wife, Shannon) Delgado of Edmond, Oklahoma; two stepsons: T. Aaron (and his wife, LeAnne) Delgado of Great Bend, Kansas and David D. Delgado of Larned, Kansas; sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers:  Rick (and his wife, Johnnie Lee) Francis of Manhattan, Kansas and Todd (and his wife, Linda) Francis of Great Bend, Kansas; three step-brothers:  Michael (and his wife, Barbara) Grover of St. Francis, Kansas, Dan (and his wife, Lenora) Grover of Hays, Kansas, and Sylvan (and his wife, Sharon) Grover of Brownwood, Texas; four sisters:  Penny (and her husband, Gary) Meintner and Sheena Thomas of Great Bend, Kansas and Mavis (and her husband, Dana) Vinsonhaler and Tawana (and her husband, Todd) Berens of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; one step-sister, Cheri (and her husband, Leroy) Weese of Chanute, Kansas. There is not enough newsprint to list her many, many friends.  Gwini was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather (Clarence Grover); one step-son, Curtis L. Delgado; one granddaughter, Crystal Dawn Delgado-Harris; and one brother, Nava Rolli Graham.  Rest in peace, our beautiful lady.

Abbie Louise Miller

GREAT BEND—Abbie Louise Miller, a resident of Great Bend since 1945, entered her eternal home Friday, November 27, 2015. Abbie and her husband Dean moved to Great Bend after Dean returned from serving in Italy during World War II. They were married June 14, 1943, in Rapid City, S.D.

Born to William Samuel and Leela Knox, Abbie grew up with her other three siblings on the family farm located in Piedmont, Kansas. She was active in various activities during her school years in addition to helping her family on the farm. She was on the debate team and played the violin in the high school orchestra. Abbie graduated valedictorian of her high school class.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Piedmont. She was pleased to tell others that she, her sister and brothers were all baptized in the river that flowed through their family farm.

Abbie attended Emporia State University where she was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha social sorority. She earned a life certificate at Emporia State University and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Fort Hays State University. Abbie taught in Eureka, as well as in Claflin and Great Bend. She also did private tutoring.

Abbie was involved in the Great Bend community. She was active in Athenian Club and Panhellenic. She served on the board of directors of Golden Belt Community Concert Association and the Great Bend Children’s Learning Center.  Since 1990, she volunteered over 6,000 hours at the Central Kansas Medical Center. She also volunteered at the Heartland Cancer Center. She was a charter member of the Great Bend Country Club and was very involved as a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ where she served for more than sixty years in a variety of capacities. Abbie had a deep and abiding faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her two daughters, Vikki (Robert) Crouch of Saint Joseph, Missouri, and Paula (Raymond) Middleton of the Woodlands, Texas; grandchildren Elisa (Jeffrey) Tomich, Melanie Middleton, Dean Crouch (April), Robert Middleton (Patty), and Lauren Middleton; great grandchildren Gabriella and Henry Tomich, Brighton Abbie Crouch and Wesley Middleton. Abbie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dean, her two brothers Robert Knox of Piedmont and William Knox of Omaha, and her sister Mary Brown of Eureka.

There will be a celebration of life service 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015 at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with the Rev. John Grummon officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to service time, Tuesday at the funeral homeA private graveside service will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, where she will be buried alongside her husband in the Knox family plot. Memorials are suggested to the Golden Belt Community Concert Association Endowment at Golden Belt Community Foundation or St. Rose Health Center Endowment for Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Florence Marie Clayton Doze

Florence Marie Clayton Doze passed from this life November 25, 2015 in Wichita. Flo was born in Kingman, KS on January 19, 1938 to Harry and Blanche (Wallace) Clayton. She was a long time resident of Barton County, KS where she raised her family. Flo worked as a dispatcher most of her adult life first in the oilfield then later for Barton County Sheriff ‘s office where she retired in 1998. After her retirement she spent her time helping others. She volunteered for both Barton County Youth Home and the Hoisington Girls Home (Logan Haus) and spent many years working with the Kansas Guardianship Program and as a Poll Worker for the Barton County Election Board.

Flo was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Elwood (Woody) Doze, brothers, Dale Clayton, Harold Clayton, sister Phyllis Fellers and grandson, William Hobdy.

She is survived by children; Denton (Marcina) Doze, of Hurley, MS, Kenton (Teri) Doze, of Hoisington and daughter, Rowena Clark of Stafford. She has one sister, Barbara (Kenny) Sowers of Kingman. Flo had 11 grandchildren and 17 great grand children and 2 great-great grandchildren whom she loved to play with and spoil.

Arrangements will be cremation and a private graveside service with internment at Waterloo Cemetery, Kingman County, KS.

In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Sunflower Diversified Foundation or Rosewood Services Roots and Wings Endowment in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, P.O. Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.
