Sue Shoen

Shoen, SueSue Shoen, 77, of Ellinwood KS, passed into eternal life, with her six children by her side, on November 10, 2015.

Sue’s memory will be cherished by her six children, Theresa Fish (Morris) Temecula, CA, Stephanie Jacobs (Dave) Great Bend, KS, Joe Shoen (Cheryl) Virginia Beach, VA, Billy Shoen (Carol) Virginia Beach VA, Darren Shoen (Beth) Bedford, VA, Dani Shoen (Josh) Spokane, WA. She is also survived by sister Jane Rush (Jim) San Marcos, CA and 15 grandchildren & 3 great-grandchildren.

Sue was born on November 19, 1937 in American Fork, UT, to Robert and Wilma Crookston. She moved to El Cajon, California in 1949. She graduated from El Cajon High School in 1956. After raising her six children in San Diego with her husband Joseph Shoen, she went back to school and became a Certified Nurses Aid. She moved to Great Bend, KS in 1992 and was employed at Cherry Village Nursing Home, fulfilling her true calling helping others, until she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Sue loved all and was loved by all. Her kind, sweet, gentle and compassionate nature, along with her perpetual genuine smile, was a true gift and light to this world.

Denis J. Lutz

Lutz, DenisDateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Denis J. Lutz, 78, died November 10, 2015 at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born July 22, 1937 at Spearville, the son of Adolph John and Lucy M. (Conrardy) Lutz.

He attended St. John Catholic School, Spearville and St. Andrew Catholic School, Wright, graduating in 1951. He attended St. Gregory High School, Shawnee, Okla., from 1951 to 1955 and then St. Mary of the Plains, graduating in 1959. In 1959, Mr. Lutz enlisted in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1963. The same year, he took a job with Universal CIT. He married Kathleen Kummer October 16, 1965 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. A year later, the couple moved to Great Bend where Denis spent 32 years as an agent for Allstate Insurance, retiring December 30, 1998. Kathleen died January 1, 2005. Denis then married Ronnie L. (Boor) Drees August 5, 2011 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend. She survives.

He served the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church as a CCD teacher, reader of the Holy Word of God, and as a school commission member. He served his community as an Optimist Club member for 49 years, and as president in 1985, was a member and former president and ambassador of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, board member and former president of Great Bend United Way and a member of the Silver Cougar Club. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus Council #862 for sixty years.

Mr. Lutz was an avid Great Bend Panthers, Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs, and University of Kansas Jayhawks fan. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and computer games. Baseball was his favorite sport, and he enjoyed coaching in the Great Bend Recreation leagues.

Denis and Kathleen were blessed with four children, who survive: Denis J. Lutz II and his wife Catherine of Dodge City, Kan., Daniel R. Lutz and his wife Glenda of Dickinson, Texas, Kent W. Lutz and his wife Melanie of Des Moines, Iowa; and Michelle Kumke and her husband Chris of Olathe, Kan. His marriage to Ronnie added two additional children to the marriage: Kim Cloyd and her husband Raymond of Manhattan, Kan.; and Ryan Williams and his wife Christine of New York, N.Y.  Additional survivors include eleven grandchildren, Ryan Lutz of Owensboro, Ky., Joshua Lutz of Lawrence, Kan., Griffin Spell of San Marcos, Texas, Connor Spell of San Marcos, Texas, Andrew Lutz of West Des Moines, Iowa, Penelope Lutz of Des Moines, Iowa, Lucy Lutz of Des Moines, Iowa, Michael Kumke of Olathe, Kan., Mia Kumke of Olathe, Kan., Alissa Cloyd of Manhattan, Kan., and Chris Williams of New York, N.Y.; two sisters: Colletta Ciccarelli of Vacaville, Calif., and Cecelia Lutz of Boulder, Colo.; and two brothers: Kevin Lutz and his wife Nancy of Elkhart, Kan., and Gregory Lutz and his wife Salame of Albuquerque, N.M.

Vigil service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 16, 2015 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Betty P. Sloan, age 90 years of Great Bend, Kansas and formerly of Lewis, Kansas, passed away early on Friday morning, November 6, 2015 at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend after a brief illness.   Betty was born on May 13, 1925 at Lewis, Kansas to Lloyd and Stella (Hainer) Robbins and graduated from Lewis High School in 1943.  She was united in marriage to Merle A. Sloan on June 23, 1944 at Larned, Kansas.  Betty was a homemaker for many years and in 1958 went to work as a Postal Clerk at the Lewis Post Office in Lewis, Kansas, a position she held for 27 years until her retirement in 1985.  Betty moved to Great Bend with her husband in 2000.  She was a member of the Church of Christ in both Lewis and Great Bend, and loved sewing, cooking, and painting wooden crafts.

Survivors include one son, Larry (and his wife, Mary) Sloan of Albert, Kansas; two daughters:  Loretta (and her husband, Roger) Leith of Wichita, Kansas and Lorena Sloan (and her husband, Marlin Portenier) of Great Bend, Kansas; four grandchildren (Jacob, Jessie, and Jodie Sloan and Kim Velez) and four great-grandchildren (Colton, Elizabeth, and Ethan Sloan and Daniel Velez); one brother, W.R. (and his wife, Yvonne) Robbins of Great Bend, Kansas and one sister, Verna “Jean” Davis of Great Bend, Kansas.  Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (Merle A. Sloan on March 10, 2005), and one brother (Ross Robbins).

Clinton Vratil photoLarned – Clinton D. Vratil, 69, passed away November 5, 2015, at his home in Larned.

He was born September 12, 1946, in Larned, the son of Donald William and Marietta May Fairchild Vratil. A lifetime area resident, he worked for Tabler Furniture for 44 years as an Electronic Technician in Larned.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Larned, where he served as an Elder. He was also a member of the First Christian Church Men’s Ministry, Larned Country Club, Jaycee Group, Optimist Club and was a Hunter Safety Instructor.

On September 13, 1968, he married Jeanne Ritchie in Larned. She survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Marcie (Michael) Bruders, Rockford, MN, and Julie (Michael) Snyder, Larned; a sister, Linda Brown, Lenexa; three grandsons, Shawn Bruders, Camry and Jace Snyder; two granddaughters, Amanda Parise and Ashtan Van Buskirk; three great grandchildren, Aiden, Alivia and Adelyn Parise; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Pastor Marcus Gonzalez presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

AMARILLO, Texas — Mildred Johnson Booker, 92, passed away Nov. 2, 2015 at Bullhead City, Ariz. She was born April 23, 1923 at Great Bend, the daughter of Gilbert and Lena (Bortz) Johnson. She began working at the age of 16, keeping books for Mering and Son, and continued for nine years. She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1940. She married Arthur Marvin Booker February 7, 1948. He died in 1980. Whie in Great Bend, Mildred was active in the Busy Buzzers 4-H Club. Following their marriage, in 1951, Mildred began selling for Stanley Home Products, Inc. During her employment, she won numerous awards and accolades, trips and cars for her outstanding sales representation. She was a member of the American Business Women’s Association for more than sixty years.

Survivors include two sisters: Dorras Evelyn Barnes of Fort Mohave, Ariz., and Treva Beatrice Smith of Larned, Kan., and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Elton Johnson, and his wife Glenna Mae, and one sister, Darlene Fox.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with Pastor Tom Swain officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Arthur Melroy Wagner Jr.

Wagner, Arthur photoGarfield – Arthur Melroy Wagner Jr. 93, passed away November 4, 2015 at the Medicalodge, Kinsley.

He was born September 13, 1922 in Ash Valley, KS., the son of Arthur Melroy and Mary Sandstrom Wagner Sr. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer, school bus driver, was employed by the Larned State Hospital and was a court appointed guardian.

He was a member of the Assembly of God, Larned where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the VFW, Larned, American Legion, Garfield and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

On April 11, 1954, he married Rose Marie Miller in Garfield. She passed away May 8, 2014.

Survivors include: three sons, Art (Trecia) Wagner III, Kinsley, Steve (Pam) Wagner, Garfield, Mark (Yvonne) Wagner, Garfield; a sister, Ardyth Marie Ostlin, Calhan, CO; six grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, at the Larned Cemetery with Arthur Wagner III presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned with military graveside rites.

Maurice Haberman

Maurice J. “Morris” Haberman, 67, died November 2, 2015, at Kansas Medical Center, Andover, KS. He was born March 9, 1948, the son of Alex J. and Augusta J. (Koriel) Haberman. Maurice graduated from Great Bend High School in 1966 and then in 1970 received his Bachelors in Industrial Arts from Fort Hays State College.

On April 28, 1979, he married Patricia K. Moeder in Hoisington. She survives.

A lifetime resident of Barton County, Maurice was a farmer and stockman. He was a loving father and good grounded person who chose to be an organ donor so that he may continue to help others even after death.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, was a third degree knight with the Knights of Columbus Council #1521, and a member of the Hart-Parr Oliver Collectors Association.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia K. Haberman; a son, Patrick A. Haberman and wife Rachel of Brookville; brother, Alvin Haberman and wife Martha of Great Bend; sister, Bernadine Hammeke and husband Robert of Burdett; and a sister-in-law, Rosanne Haberman of Topeka.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and a brother, Donald Haberman.

Vigil with a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m., Friday, November 6, 2015, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., November 7, 2015, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, celebrated by Father Anselm Eke. Burial will follow in the St. John Catholic Church Cemetery. Friends may call 9 a.m. until vigil on Friday at the funeral home.
