Larned – Marjorie June Dawes, 75, passed away November 1, 2015 at Kenwood Plaza, St. John, KS, after a long illness.
She was born February 19, 1940, in Grainfield, KS, the daughter of Philip and Velma Wolf.

A long-time resident of Larned, Marjorie was a retired diet technician from Larned State Hospital. She also helped many people as an independent professional tax preparer, having gained experience as a legal secretary for Morgan Wright Law Office in her early career.

She was of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by: A sister, Juanita Stillings, Phoenix, AZ. Two children, Karen (Mark) Klaus, O’Fallon, MO.; and Michael (Dana) Dawes, Great Bend, KS. Seven grandchildren, Nathan (Karisa) Stude, Larned, KS.; Tyrone (Kara), Palm Habor, FL.; Chelsea Klaus, Winston-Salem, N.C.; Shannon Klaus, Berkeley, CA.; and Erica Klaus, O’Fallon, MO; and Grant and Nate Dawes, Great Bend, KS. Five great grandchildren, Angelina, Alexis and Natalie Stude, Larned, KS; and Oliver and Clark Stude, Palm Harbor, FL. She is also survived by a childhood and lifelong friend Darlene Befort-Medina, Larned, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Lorraine Stude; and a sister, Phylise Ritchie.

A private grave-side service is planned for the family.

Wilma Marie Larson, 79, died October 27, 2015, at Locust Grove Village, LaCrosse, Kansas. She was born November 26, 1935, in Arvada, Colorado, the daughter of Roy and Myrtle (Darbro) Tunnel. Wilma graduated from Chanute High School in 1953.

On January 2, 1955, she married Harold Larson in Chanute, Kansas.

Wilma and Harold then moved to Hoisington where they resided for the last 60 years. She worked in the business office of the Barton County Community College as the Financial Aid Professional for 17 years.

Wilma was a member of the Hoisington Historical Society, Friends of Cheyenne Bottoms, and the Barton County Historical Society.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Harold Larson; and three children, Alan Larson and wife Patty of Bixby, OK, Rodney Larson of Liebenthal, KS, and Anita Larson and husband Tom Arensberg of Lawrence, KS; three grandchildren, Angela Morris and husband Sam of Brightwood, OR, Andrew Larson of Portland, OR, and Sarah Larson, US Navy, Hawaii.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde, Kenneth, and Jack Tunnel; and a sister, Dorothy Benn.

Cremation has taken place and there are no formal public services. however the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, October 31, 2015, at the funeral home. A private family inurnment will be in Hoisington Cemetery.

Clarence Burns

Date of Death: October 27, 2015 

Clarence J. Burns, 93, died Oct. 27, 2015, surrounded by his family at Almost Home, Inc., Great Bend. He was born Sept. 30, 1922, the third child of Frank and Nora (Heitman) Burns, on a farm south of Fowler, Kan. As the last member, the Burns family is reunited and restored.

He was a 1941 graduate of Fowler High School and attended Dodge City Community College, where he studied accounting and played football. Drafted in to the United States Army in November 1942, he served in the European Theater. On Nov. 2, 1944, he was captured by the Germans in Holland and was held prisoner of war until his release on June 2, 1945.

He returned to Kansas following the war and began adjusting to life. He moved to Great Bend in 1946, and began work for the Dominican Sisters’ St. Rose Hospital laundry and later Central Kansas Medical Center, retiring in 1996 as linen supervisor after fifty years of service. While working at St. Rose he met a St. Rose School of Nursing student, Elizabeth “Betty” Graham and they were married at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend, on Nov. 4, 1947. She died May 11, 2012.  In 1954, the couple moved to a farm southwest of Great Bend, where both worked and farmed together. They then moved east of Hart’s Corner in 1974 where Clarence continued to work the farm and in later years, take care of his chickens. Clarence was known for his honesty, work ethic and his love of country.

Mr. Burns was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. He was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111, American Legion Argonne Post 180, and Knights of Columbus Council #862, all of Great Bend. His hobbies included working, carpentry and farming.

Mr. Burns is survived by one son, Tom Burns and his wife Kay, Great Bend; two daughters, Linda White and her husband Steve and Barbara Davenport and her husband Harlan, both of Great Bend; seven grandchildren: Douglas McNett and his wife Jennifer, Larned; Jennifer (Davenport) Strecker and her husband Eric, Towanda; Kris White and his wife Becca, Tulsa, Okla.; Chad White and his wife Crystal, Brighton, Colo.; Erin (Burns) VanCamp and her husband Chad, Olathe; Alli (Burns) Conine and her husband Zach, Scott City; and Logan Burns and his wife Traci, Great Bend; and ten great-grandchildren: Ross, Reed, Ella and Emma McNett; Jackson and Kennedy Strecker, Avery, Aaden and Ava VanCamp, and Harper Conine. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Bertha Batt and Esther Hayes, and one brother Lawrence Burns.

A Rosary and family greeting will be at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, at Bryant Funeral Home.  Vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015 at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery, with military rites by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from noon to 9:00 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Barton County 4-H Holding Board Scholarship or Quilts of Valor/American Legion Post 180 Auxiliary, in care of the funeral home.

Jeremy D. Woods

Woods, JeremyLarned – Jeremy D. Woods, 33, passed away October 26, 2015 at his home, Larned.

He was born September 6, 1982 in Larned; the son of David and Debra Ruehlen Woods. A lifetime area resident; he was the farm manager for David Woods Hay Co.

He was a member of the Larned United Methodist Church, Larned, Ducks Unlimited, N.R.A., was a cub scout, an avid hunter, fisherman and loved the outdoors.

On March 24, 2007 he married Jessica Griffin in Larned. She survives.

Other survivors include; his parents; three daughters, Taylor, Trinity and Tuesday Woods, all of the home, Larned; three brothers, Jason (Jeslyn), Joseph (Jessi) and Jacob Woods all of Larned; a sister, Janae Woods, Larned; grandfather, Marvin “Bud” Ruehlen, Larned;

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Lorraine Woods; grandmother, Olive Ruehlen and uncle Danny Woods.

Funeral will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Larned United Methodist Church, Larned, with Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Visitation will be noon to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

He was born December 7, 1949, in Larned, the son of Paul Estal and Romona J. Lewis Snodgrass. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer/Stockman.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rozel where is served as a trustee. He was also a member of the NRA, Kansas Cattlemen’s Association, R-Calf, American Hereford Association and was the clerk for the Grant Township.

On June 12, 1977 he married Susan R. Steffen in Burdett. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Henry (Kristen) Snodgrass, Burdett and Charles (Rebecca) Snodgrass, Burdett; a brother, Jerry Snodgrass, Rozel; three sisters, Deborah (Jerome) Mangen, Cedar Vale, KS, Diana Pfeifer, Hays, KS., Donna (Brian) Pivonka, Larned, KS; four grandchildren, Lane, Lauryn, Emaily and Lily Snodgrass, and Aunt Dillie Snodgrass, La Crosse.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe and John Snodgrass.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Pastor Brad McCoy presiding. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary. Burial will be in the Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett.
