Jean Marie Smith, 88, died October 21, 2015, at her home near Hoisington. She was born May 15, 1927, in the Eureka Township, Barton County, Kansas, the daughter of Arthur Alyea and Laura Marie (Spitzmiler) Johnson. Jean graduated from Great Bend High School in 1944.

On June 5, 1944, she married LeRoy Smith at the Hoisington United Methodist Church. Jean and LeRoy owned and operated the Smith Appliance Center in Hoisington together for 40 years.

Jean was a member of First Christian Church in Hoisington and later Great Bend.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, LeRoy Smith; and five children, Connie (Eldon) Schultz of Enid, OK, Carol (Ronnie) Polzin of Hoisington, Lee (Jane) Smith of Concordia, Cathy (Gary) McCurdy of Emporia, and Roger (Dorothy) Smith of Milton, WV; 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Cedric, Eldon, and Alvin Johnson; and two sisters, Florence Betts and Nadine Amerine.

Per Jean’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at this time. Memorials may be made to Kans for Kids, First Christian Church, or Golden Belt Home Health Care and Hospice, in care of the Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, P.O. Box 146, Hoisington KS 67544.

OBITUARY INFORMATION

He married Carol Wenzel March 22, 1970 at North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Dr. Smith was a Great Bend, Kan., resident and the pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church since 1972. He was president of the Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists for two terms, served on the Board of Trustees for the Midwestern Theological Seminary, was a founding board member of Webster Conference Center in Salina, and helped found the Barton County Young Men’s Organization Boys Home. He was pastor at Larned for four-and-one-half years and Hoisington five years, while pastoring in Great Bend. He taught one year at Sterling College. Doyle loved God and served in obedience to his calling for forty-three years at FSBC and KNCSB. He loved the people of Great Bend and taught in his life and ministry how to know and follow God. He died as he lived, trusting God.

He was preceded in death by daughter, Allison Leigh Smith.

He married Donna Lee Rhodes January 28, 1950 at Gosper County, Nebraska. A retired surgeon, Dr. McAllaster was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1962 coming from Greeley County, Kansas. He was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Barton County Medical Society, Kansas State Medical Society, American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, Great Bend Rotary, Rotary International, American Trapshooting Association, Past Board member of Kansas Blue Shield and National Blue Shield, Past President of CKMC Medical Staff, and ROMEOs.

Brett Meyers

Brett Meyers PHOTOLarned – Brett Meyers, 51, passed away on October 17th, 2015 in Newton, KS. He was born in Larned on June 14th, 1964, the son of Terry and Betty Meyers. He graduated from El Dorado High School in 1982, and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business.

Brett was a farmer and worked for Ward Feed Yard and ILS Farms for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and coaching the girls Renegades softball team in Larned, and he served as the secretary and treasurer of the Pawnee County Township. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially during the holidays, when he would host many friends during the hunting season.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Victor and Hilda Meyers, John and Helen Berscheidt, and his cousin Amy Suiter. He is survived by parents Terry and Betty Meyers of Newton, KS, his daughter Shaylee Meyers and her fiancé Storm Mosher of Lakin, KS, sister Jill Griswold and her husband Ed, his two nieces Toria and Jentry Griswold, and nephew Easton Griswold of Newton, KS. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He is loved by many and will be missed forever. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday October 24th, 2015 at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned, KS. Lunch will follow the service at the Zook community building. The inurnment will be held after lunch at the Lakin Comanche Cemetery, Ellinwood, KS at approximately 3:00 p.m. Memorial funds will be given to the Shaylee Meyers educational fund in care of Beckwith Mortuary, P.O. Warren Everett Inskeep

img904Warren Everett Inskeep, 94, formerly of Cawker City, went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 14, 2015, in Larned, Kansas. Warren was born on November 26, 1920 in Cawker City, Kansas to the parents of Lester and Josephine Inskeep. He was one month from turning 95.

Warren attended grade school in the Cottonwood country school. He graduated from Cawker City High School. He went to Ottawa University where he attended for 2 ½ years before enlisting in the Army Air Force. It was at Ottawa University where he met his life-long love, L. Jean Burris. They were married on May 26, 1944. To this union, three daughters were born, Joan, June and Jennifer.

As a flying cadet, Warren trained in various locations in Texas before receiving B-24 training in Fort Worth, Texas and Massachusetts. Warren served in the 15th Air Force in Cerignola, Italy, with the 461 Bomb Group-764 Squadron. He was flight commander and pilot of his crew from 1942-1945, flying a tour of missions into Austria and Southern Germany. Warren was honorably discharged in 1945 as a 2nd Lieutenant and given the air medal with four battle stars. His involvement and membership with the American Legion #379 was an important to him, serving as chaplain for many years.

Warren returned to the family farm in Cawker City to farm the land he loved. He was a long time farmer stockman, working and harvesting the land for over sixty years.

Warren was a community servant, understanding the need to give back to the community that had given him so much. He served as a local school board member and was a member of the charter board to establish the North Central Vocational Technical School in Beloit. Warren served on numerous agriculture boards and committees throughout Mitchell County and the state of Kansas. He served on the board of Farmers and Merchants State Bank, Cawker City, for over thirty years. He served on the boards for the Heritage Village and Historical Hesperian Museum Society. He loved history and the preservation of documents and photographs. Photography was a life passion. Beginning in 1995, he wrote a weekly column of “Remembering the Past with Pictures” for The Cawker City Ledger. A book of his stories was published in 2012.

As a young man, Warren committed his life to Jesus Christ. He loved his home church, First Baptist, Cawker City. He served faithfully as a member, deacon, moderator and Sunday school teacher. Warren loved to sing and served in many capacities with his gift. In 1964, he served as an agricultural missionary to Thailand. Upon his return, he served the cause of missions to American Baptist churches in several states. Warren was a faithful member of Gideons International, Beloit Camp, for 61 years.

Warren was preceded in death by his wife, L. Jean Burris Inskeep; his parents. Lester and Josephine Inskeep; a brother, Keith Inskeep; a sister, Joyce Inskeep Berry; and a great grandson, Jack Barger.

Survivors include daughters Joan (Kent), Wichita; June (Bill), Larned; Jennifer (Darris), Salina; a brother, Willard Inskeep (Shirley), Sterling, CO; seven grandchildren: Sherri Brummer, Wichita; Steve Brummer (Lisa), Wichita; Scott Brummer, Wichita; Clint Barger (Lynn), Larned; Emily Del Rosario (Rick), Houston, Texas; Elizabeth DeBruyn (David), Lenexa; and Andrew Larson (Noelle), Crested Butte, CO. He also leaves behind 18 great grandchildren: Katya Brummer, Madison Brummer, Kaleb Brummer, Mia Brummer, Elijah Brummer, Noah Brummer, Chloe Brummer, Allison Brummer, Emma Brummer, Alex Barger, Taylor Barger, Tyse Del Rosario, Elise Del Rosario, Rebecca DeBruyn, Sarah Kate DeBruyn, Luke DeBruyn, Benaiah Larson and Gabriel Larson. He has one great great grandchild, Jackson Brummer.

Sister Rosalia Govert

Sister Rosalia Govert, 100, died Saturday, October 17, 2015, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend.

Born September 28, 1915 in Willowdale, Kansas, as Pauline Mary Govert, Sister Rosalia was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rosena Greiving Govert. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community July 13, 1930, and pronounced her first vows August 17, 1933. She celebrated eighty years of religious profession in 2013.

Sister Rosalia ministered most of her life as a teacher, and sometimes also as the principal of grades 1 – 8 in parochial elementary schools of Kansas – over 35 years in all. After her studies to become a cosmetologist she served her Sisters at the motherhouse as beautician. She was receptionist at the Art of Learning Center in Wichita and volunteer receptionist at Central Kansas Medical Center. In 1995 she retired at the motherhouse where she continued to beautify the house and dining room with her artistic flower arrangements and table decorations.

Sister Rosalia is survived by her Dominican Sisters Community and two brothers, Joseph, Tribune, KS, Julius, Cunningham, KS and one sister, Rosella, Midland TX.

Sister Rosalia’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Monday, October 19, 2015, at 3:30 p.m., where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 21, 2015, with Rev. Don Bedore presiding. A wake service will be held Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent.

He was a member of the LDS Church in Great Bend, Alpha Eta Rho, a fraternity for pilots, and the Holyrood Fire Dept.  He also served as an assistant scout master for Great Bend Troop 7111, and a motorcycle safety instructor. He was a resident of Holyrood, KS.

Charles Wesley Calp

Charles Wesley “Charley” Calp, 67, died October 13, 2015, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born May 25, 1948, in Baltimore, MD, the son of Austin and Lillian (Tuzicka) Calp.
Charley graduated from Hoisington High School. He worked in the Oil Fields, in seismography work when he was first out of school. He then worked for Shirer Well Services on a pulling unit and later JayHawk Pipe Services rebuilding drilling rigs. He would also process furs for his brother at Calp’s Fur and Root. He loved fossil hunting and did programs teaching kids about fossils for the Grade Schools in Hoisington.
He is survived by a brother, Calvin “Trapper” Calp, of Hoisington, a half sister, Betty Puckett of Texas; a half brother, Alvin Brazda of Las Vegas, NV; two daughters, Janice Lauber and husband Daniel, and Louann Clark and husband Lawrence, all of Great Bend; twelve grandchildren; and twenty six great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a half brother, Morris Brazda.
Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2015, at Nicholson Ricke Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dick Ogle presiding.
Friends may sign the book at the funeral home and family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Leonard A. Finger

Finger, LeonardLarned – Leonard A. Finger, 93, passed away October 15, 2015 at his home, Larned.

He was born August 1, 1922 in Odin, Kansas; the son of Francis J. and Clara C. Demel Finger. A lifetime area resident he was an irrigation farmer and a ewe flock producer.

At the age of seven Leonard moved with his parents to a farm north of Larned. He attended his first two grades of school in Barton County and then completed his grade school education at the Gem country school. He graduated from Larned High School in 1939. After his high school years he farmed with his father doing custom silo filling and hay baling.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, was a Eucharistic Minister, served on the church finance committee and also the education commission; was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a former director of the Kansas Soybean Association, and a Livestock leader for the Tiny Toilers 4-H club.

On May 11, 1948 he married Agnes Ann Vondracek, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas in a double wedding ceremony with his brother Marvin Finger and Agnes’ cousin Helen Pechanec.

Survivors include; his wife of 67 years, Agnes Finger, Larned; three sons, Mark and wife Jonnie, Lawrence, Greg and wife Deanna, Belpre and Tom and wife Connie, Augusta; four daughters, Mary Ellen and husband David Vickery, Cold Spring, New York, Margaret and husband Lee Scheufler, Sterling, Susan Latimore, Larned, Julie and husband Scott Borchardt, Walpole, Mass; a brother, Francis Finger and wife Donna, Fayetteville, Arkansas; three sisters, Carolyn and husband Gilbert Urban, Salina, Catherine and husband Charles Kuhlman, Trumbull, Nebraska and Mary Lou Wheeler, Hesston; sister-in-law Helen Finger, Rozel; nineteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by; a brother, Marvin Finger, two sisters Mildred Phillips and Dorothy Cavenah, a daughter-in-law, Jennifer Finger and a grandson Garrett Finger.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Warren Stecklein officiating. Vigil Service will be 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

Doyle Edward Winchester

Larned – Doyle Edward Winchester, 97, passed away on October 12, 2015 at Leisure Homestead, St. John, Kansas.

He was born June 26, 1918 in Stafford, Kansas, the son of Etta and Seafus Winchester. Doyle was a long time resident of Larned, driving the “slow moving vehicle” truck for many years.

A private graveside burial was arranged by Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. A special thank you for Doyle’s care goes to the kind staff at the Leisure Homestead, St. John, Kansas.
