Janis Friedeman Sayler

Friedeman, JanisGREAT BEND – Janis Friedeman Sayler, 84, entered heaven on Sept. 25, 2015.  She was born July 13, 1931 in Great Bend, where she spent most of her life raising her family.  She was the secretary at Washington Elementary School until retirement.  Janis was a devoted wife and mother, enthusiastic Christian, prayer warrior and founding member of Foundry Methodist Church.

Janis was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Florence (Lonnon) Travis and by her husband, Jerry Friedeman.  She is survived by her husband, Adrian Sayler, of St. John, KS; her sister, Carole (Maurice) Boughton of Tacoma, Wash.; five children, Dick Friedeman of Great Bend, Lisa (Rurel) Ausley of Niceville, Fla., Matt (Mary) Friedeman of Jackson, Miss., Todd (Karen) Friedeman of Overland Park, Kan. and Kent (Susie) Friedeman of Olathe, Kan.; thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Foundry Methodist Church in Great Bend at 2 pm and a memorial service at 3 pm on Friday, October 2, 2015.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Foundry Methodist Church at or Wesley Biblical Seminary, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Larned – Clayton Joseph (C.J.) Smith, 22, passed away September 23, 2015 at his home in Larned.

He was born October 26, 1992, in Great Bend, the son of Randall Craig and Lisa G. Alexander Smith, he was self employed.

He is survived by his parents, Lisa Alexander, Larned and Randall Smith, Missouri; a brother, Matthew W. Alexander, Larned; two nieces and two nephews.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

She was a photographer for Selden I. Peugh Photography in Hoisington, and later was a bus driver for Claflin Schools.

Mrs. Fletcher was a Salina, Kansas resident, previously residing in Hoisington and Oregon.

She was a member of Hoisington Bible Church.

Olive Marie Ruehlen

Olive PictureLarned – Olive Marie Ruehlen died on September 20, 2015 in Wichita, KS at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born on November 10, 1933 on a farm next to a creek just north of Schaffer, Kansas. She was the third daughter born to her parents, Ike & Lois (Russell) Scheideman.

She attended her first 5 years of schooling at a one room school called Stony Seven located south of Albert, Kansas. She walked 1 ½ miles to school each day. Sometimes she and her sisters rode on a horse with their neighbor, Duane Rankin.

At the age of 9, her mother died and the family moved to Larned, KS. She attended Larned schools and also began working at Wiggins Drug at the age of 15. She graduated from high school in 1951

She moved to Kansas City to attend the National School of Aeronautics in 1955 and then to Dallas, TX for 6 weeks of training with Braniff Airways. She then returned to Kansas City where she worked for Braniff Airways in reservations. In December of 1956 she moved back to Larned where she was married to Marvin (Bud) Ruehlen on Christmas Day, 1956.

She gave birth to her son David Wayne Ruehlen on February 15, 1958 and later her daughter Debra Marie Ruehlen (David) Woods on January 25, 1960.

She was a stay-at-home mom and did custom sewing until March, 1976 when she started working at First National Bank & Trust of Larned, KS. She retired on May 10, 1996.After her retirement, she and Bud did some traveling and also enjoyed being at home.

Olive was preceded in death by her mother, Lois Scheideman (1943), her father Ike Scheideman (1964), her sister Doris Alsen (1970), her sister Ethel Blackburn (1974), and her step-mother Blanche Epler Scheideman (2003).

She is survived by her husband Marvin Ruehlen of Larned, KS, sister Karen Smith of Jerome, ID,her son David Wayne Ruehlen of Larned, KS, her daughter Debra Ruehlen Woods and husband David Michael Woods of Larned KS, 7 grandchildren: Jason (Jeslyn), Jeremy (Jessica), Joseph (Jessi), Jacob and Janae Woods (David Michael & Debra), and Sarah and Haley Ruehlen (David Wayne), and 7 great-grandchildren: Taylor, Trinity, and Tuesday Woods (Jeremy & Jessica), Ethan, Natalie, and Logan Woods (Jason & Jeslyn), and Preslee Woods (Joseph & Jessi).

Funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Larned with Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

Becky was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, and E.H.U. She was also a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and a Girl Scout leader. Her many joys in life included crafts, baking, and caring for her grandchildren.

A long time Great Bend resident, Mr. Hunt was a driller for Pickrell Drilling.

He was a member of First Street Church of God, Hoisington.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar Society, Great Bend.
