Sandra J. Boyce, age 78 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Thursday morning, September 10, 2015 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.  Sandra was born on September 27, 1936 at Bar Harbor, Maine to Walter and Ethel (Reynolds) Dwelley. She graduated from Westbrook High School in Westbrook, Maine and later attended Nursing College in New Hampshire for two years. Sandra was united in marriage to James L. “Jim” Boyce on October 25, 1978 at Swan Valley, Idaho, and the couple lived in Whittier, California and Idaho Falls, Idaho for many years prior to moving to Great Bend, Kansas in 1998.  Sandra worked as an accountant for various companies prior to her retirement, and after moving to Great Bend she worked part time for Sunflower Diversified Services in Great Bend, Kansas for about five years.  Sandra was gifted with many talents, including oil painting (primarily nature scenes), needlework, playing piano, was an accomplished seamstress, and she also enjoyed growing flowers.

Survivors include one son, Steven W. (and his wife, Carol) Skolas of Great Bend, Kansas; one daughter:  Jackie (and her husband, Robert) Fisher of San Clemente, California; three grandchildren:  Stacey Mudgett, Diana Ewing, and Steven J. Skolas; and six great-grandchildren:  Jacquelyn, Peter, and Nicole Abundis, Wyatt Mudgett, and Reagan and Ryder Skolas.  Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James L. Boyce on January 16, 2012, one brother (Don Dwelley), and two sisters (Virginia Powers and Barbara Taylor).

Hedi Schulz

Hedi Schulz died, August 5, 2015 at The Place (ALF) in Vero Beach, FL. Born on September 11, in Berlin, Germany, she was the last remaining child of Michael and Maria Wittl. She married Joe Schulz in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany in 1946. When Joe was honorably discharged from the Armed Services, they settled in Kansas, making Great Bend their home in 1953. Together, they owned and operated Arkansas Sand Company. Joe passed away in 1967 and her only son, Mike, died the following year. Hedi remained in Great Bend until 1985 when she moved to Fort Pierce, Florida to be closer to her daughter, Cindy and family.

Survivors include one daughter Cindy Schulz Long and husband Dr. Roger Long of Vero Beach, Florida; granddaughter, Christina Long of Vero Beach; sister-in-law, Ann Soukup of Kanopolis; Nephews, Joachim Wittl and Hubert Wittl of Berlin, Germany; Dr. Kevin Schulz of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Ronnie Soukup of Golden,Colorado; Randy Soukup of Kanopolis, Kansas; and Niece, Crystal Munoz of Kanopolis, Kansas.

Hedi was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and later St. Mark Catholic Church in Fort Pierce, FL. Never idle, Hedi volunteered her time at St. Mark’s Thrift Shop and was a member of the Fort Pierce Women’s Club. Her greatest love was her only grandchild, Christina, whom she lovingly nurtured. Hedi died peacefully with her family at her side.

A Rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 14, 2015 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Memorial Mass will follow the Rosary at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church.  Interment is at Hillcrest Cemetery. Memorial has been established with the Vero Beach Area Order of Malta, 121Palm Island Lane, Vero Beach, FL.

John J. Perez Jr.

Wichita – John J. Perez Jr., 57, passed away September 2, 2015 at his home in Wichita.

He was born June 28, 1958 in Kansas City, Missouri. The son of John Perez and Helen Lemuz Perez Asher. A lifetime area resident, living in Wichita for the last 10 years; he was a Truck Driver, a Lineman and a Certified Med Aide.

He was a member of the St. Marys Catholic Church, Wichita.

On June 17, 2010 he married Vorapa Khomsiri in Wichita. She survives.

Other survivors include; three sons, Eddie Rodriguez, Hutchinson, Mario Perez, Larned and Sergio Perez, Emporia; a daughter, Xaviera Jaso, Hutchinson; a step-daughter, Suttapak (Vaen) Suksabai, Bangkok, Thailand; and numerous grandchildren, and aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by; a son, Sgt. Christopher Perez of the United States Marine Corps.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned with Father Warren Stecklein officiating. Vigil Service will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas with Military Graveside Rites.

She married John H. Detmer September 5, 1964 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, Kansas.  A lifetime Barton County resident, Mrs. Detmer was a homemaker.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where she was past Director of Religious Education, Eucharistic Minister, and served on the Liturgical Commission, as well as the Altar Society, Ecumenical Commission of the Dodge City Diocese and the Ecumenical Commission of Great Bend. She was a volunteer for the Great Bend Food Bank and Meals on Wheels and was active in service work for the Capuchin Mission, Papua, New Guinea.

Survivors include her husband: John H. Kenneth Ballard King

King, KennethGREAT BEND, Kan. – Kenneth Ballard King, 89, died August 31, 2015 at AMG Specialty Hospital, Wichita, Kan. He was born September 2, 1925 at Maryville, Mo., the son of Eugene James and Margaret Grace (Allen) King. He graduated from Conception High School, Conception, Mo., and attended the University of Kansas and Purdue University. He enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17, serving during World War II and was later recalled to serve during the Korean Conflict. Between his two tours of service, he worked as an electrical engineer for Black and Veatch. Mr. King married Norma Mae Spacil January 12, 1957 at Ellinwood, Kan. In 1956 he started his career as an electrical engineer with Western Power Gas & Light. He stayed with the same company throughout his life and through many company name changes, including Western Power, Central Telephone & Utilities, until he retired from Centel in 1986. Following his retirement he was employed by Farmers Bank and Trust until the time of his death.

Mr. King was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #862, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, American Legion Argonne Post 180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Morris-McFadden Post #3111, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #646, and B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1127. He was also active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, serving as committee member, Webelo Leader and Cub Master of Pack 120, was a committee member of Troop 161, was Scout Master and committee member of Troop 157, and served as a commissioner on the Cheyenne District, the Kanza Council, and Quivira Council of the Boy Scouts. He received the Cub Scout Training Award, Scout Master Training Award, District Award of Merit, and Silver Beaver Award. Additionally, he was Three Key Member of the Cheyenne District and Kanza Council, and served as Training Chairman and on the executive board of the Cheyenne District, Kanza Council and the Quivira Council.

Survivors include his wife: Norma Mae King of the home; three sons: James King and his wife Diane of Pittsburg, Kan., Martin King and his wife Julie of Shawnee, Kan., and Jason King and his companion Kendra Beakey of Hoisington, Kan.; two daughters: Karen Smith of Hoisington, Kan., and Lori Anne Jacobs and husband Paul of Great Bend, Kan.; one sister, Kathleen Grace Patrzykont of Mission, Kan., 11 grandchildren, Alyssa Cook and her husband Matt, Nichole King, Jayme King, Dustin Rhodes, Andrew Jacobs, Alexander Jacobs, Austin Jacobs, Adam Jacobs, Haley King, Spencer King and Hayden King; six great-grandchildren, Cameron Cook, Donovan Cook, Tripp Walker, Gaige Gunderson, Zoey King and Kason King; and special friends Ken and Lisa Edgett of Great Bend, Kan., and Cameron Bomstad of Las Vegas, Nev. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Emmett Joseph King.

Vigil Service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 7, 2015 at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. The United States Navy Honor Guard and American Legion Riders will provide military rites. Private family burial will be at a later date.
