Great Bend – Sheila Ann Stanko-Horton, 42, passed away August 30, 2015 at her residence in Great Bend.

She was born October 17, 1972 in Joliet , Illinois, the daughter of Stanley and Judith Carlyle Stanko. She lived in the area the past 7 years, was of the Lutheran faith and a CNA by occupation.

She is survived by; two sons, Dale A. Horton, Tracy Raymond Horton; a daughter, Kathryn Horton, all of Great Bend; a sister, Stephanie Genereux and husband Alan; a brother William Alvoid and wife Amy, Montour Falls, NY; finance’ Randal Coyle, Great Bend; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Tina L. Phillips Marler and Alberta May Marler.

A Graveside service will be 11 a.m., Friday at the Larned Cemetery, Larned, KS., with Pastor Mark Lovette officiating. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.

She was an avid bridge player. She graduated from University of Southern California where she met her husband Richard.
She was a member of The First Congregational Church for seventy-five years. Mary was a member of PEO, Athenian, Panhellanic and EHU. Mary was a very upbeat person and loved by everyone she met.

Patricia A. Schmidt

Pat SchmidtPatricia A. “Pat” Schmidt, 85, Hays, died Friday, August 28, 2015 at her home in Hays.

She was born August 30, 1929 in Oklahoma City the daughter of Charles and Sylvia (Winters) Everton.  At age 6, Pat’s family moved to Kinsley, KS where she lived until graduating from high school in 1947.  In the fall of 1947 she enrolled in college at Fort Hays State, where she met Bob.  They were married in LaCrosse, KS on December 28, 1949.  Pat’s interests and activities have centered on family, community, and the arts.  She has twice served as President of the Hays Arts Council and was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Board of Directors of the Association of Arts Councils of Kansas.  She was a graduate of Leadership Hays Class of 1995.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, was President of local school PTA’s, served on the Hays Beautification Committee, and for several years was Chairman of the Crafters Group of volunteer workers at Hays Medical Center.

Pat received the “Point of Life” award from Thomas More Prep – Marian High School in 2008.  With a special interest in the development of downtown Hays, she gave generously to the Downtown Hays Development Association, The Hays Arts Council, Ellis County Historical Society, Fort Hays State University, Hays Medical Center, St. Joseph Catholic Church, TMP – Marian, and other related entities in neighboring communities.

Survivors include her husband, Robert E. Schmidt of their home, a son Anthony Schmidt and wife Loreta of Lawrence, KS and their four children Andrew, Lexie, Zach, and Olivia, two daughters; Ann Onymous of Lewiston, ID and Sue K. Schmidt of Boynton Beach, FL, an Aunt, Mrs. Kenneth Dupree of Kinsley, KS, a niece Kim Brown and a nephew Scott Everton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jack Everton.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 215 W. 13th. Private family burial will take place at their Sweetwater Ranch in Ellis County at a later date.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Tuesday and from 9:30 am until 10:15 on Wednesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.  A parish vigil service will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to The Hays Arts Council, TMP – Marian High School, or to Hospice of Hays Medical Center, in care of the funeral home.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com

He graduated from Chase County High School and went to Radio School in Kansas City, where he later taught Army pilots how to operate radios during World War II. He later worked as a postal clerk at Oskaloosa, Kan., and had a radio repair shop there. Neal moved to Albuquerque, N.M., and worked as a research technician for Sandia National Laboratory until he retired and returned to his home state of Kansas. He enjoyed traveling, puttering and tinkering, science, watching football and studying financial trends.

During radio school, he met and married Thelma R. Noble January 30, 1943 at Cottonwood Falls, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife: Thelma R. Carpenter; two daughters, Joyce Hetu Hagan and her husband Everett of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Billie Bonomo of Odin, Kan.; one son: Donald Carpenter and his wife Cheryl of Annabella, Utah; one brother, Richard Carpenter of Salina, Kan.; two sisters, Lillian Davis and her husband Larry of Shawnee, Kan., and Hazel Everett of Strong City, Kan.; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons-in-law, Robert Hetu and Robert Bonomo; four brothers, Hank, William, Kenneth and Arnold; and three sisters, Ruth, Myrtle and Alice.

It was his wish to donate his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center. There are no services planned. Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie M. Ross, Jr

Charlie M. Ross, Jr, passed away Friday August 21 at the Newton Medical Center, after a long illness. Charlie was born November 21, 1943, son of the late Colonel and Mrs. Charlie Ross Sr.

He is survived by long time life partner, Ben Wooding; sisters Danny R. Fleming of VillaRica, GA, Betty R. Hawthorne and Mary J. Ross both of Wichita, KS; brother John C. Ross of Carrolton, GA and several nieces and great nieces and nephews.

Celebration of his Life will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday August 26, 2015 at Bryant Funeral Home with Sister Renee Dreiling officiating. Cremation has taken place.
