Harry Octavius Thorne II

Harry Thorne PhotoLARNED – Harry Octavius Thorne II, 97, passed away August 6, 2015 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

He was born May 3, 1918 in Norwich,KS, the son of Guy Victor and Florence Elvira Dean Thorne. A long time area resident, he was the owner of Harry’s Refrigeration for almost 46 years.

He belonged to the First United Methodist Church, VFW, American Legion and Odd Fellows all of Larned. He served in the United States Army.

On September 30, 1941, he married Ada Marie Suhler in Medicine Lodge. She passed away February 21, 2006.

Survivors include: a daughter, Nancy Baze, Mission, KS; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada Marie Thorne; son, Harry Octavius Thorne III and a sister Evelyn Beymer.

Funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned with Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Upchurch Cemetery in Norwich, KS. with military graveside rites.

OBITUARY INFORMATION

She married John L. Kultgen December 27, 1944 at Kinsley, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on June 17, 1980. Some of Evelyn’s best times were as a farm wife from 1951 to 1961 on the family farm north of Beaver, Kan., until the family moved to Great Bend. After moving from the farm, she worked in various dress shops in Great Bend, including Isern-Lutsch and Howard’s Apparel, and she was known for always looking her best. Her last job before retirement was for Fuller Brush.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111, all of Great Bend.

 

Survivors include one daughter: Mary Tobiassen and Michael Murphy of Dover, N.H.; one son: Robert J. Kultgen and his wife Mary Lou of Edmond, Okla.; one brother: John Brehm of Lakewood, Colo.; brother-in-law, Ernest Brodbeck of Arvada, Colo.; five grandchildren: Erika Tobiassen Place of Durham, N.H., Kristen Tobiassen of Dover, N.H., Michelle Tompkins of Andover, Kan., Chad Kultgen of Los Angeles, Calif., and Haley Popp of Flower Mound, Texas; four great-grandchildren: Harper Lou Popp, Willow Popp, Roman Popp, and Zachary Fry; special niece, Laura Ann Schenkel of Great Bend, KS and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Norbert Brehm and Jerome Brehm, two sisters, Dolores Brodbeck and Eulalia Steinbacher; and two sisters-in-law, Marie Zelenka and Barbara Brehm.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4:00 p.m., and Vigil Service with Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 14, 2015, at Bryant Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 15, 2015, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore celebrating. Inurnment will be in Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, Kansas. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Louise married Morris Elwood Brack August 21, 1942 at Albert, KS.  He died May 24, 1983.

A lifetime Albert, Kansas resident, Louise was a farmer, working for LaCrosse Furniture Factory for several years.

Louise was previously a 4-H community leader, involved in the Rush County Extension Office, and served on the Rush County Nursing Home Board.  She enjoyed socializing with friends, playing cards, attending community events, bird watching and gardening, and spending time with family.

She was a former member of the Albert United Methodist Church and the Otis United Methodist Church.

Larned- Charles M. Wonsetler, 85, passed away August 6, 2015 at his residence in Larned, KS.
He was born March 8, 1930 in Larned, the son of Charles H. “Sam” and Clara VanDanacker Wonsetler. A lifetime area resident, he was a Production Manager for Doerr Metal.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW, and President of the Welcome Inn Senior Center.

On May 26, 1954 in Larned, he married Josephine “Jo” Mooney. She passed away October 8, 2004.

Survivors include: one son, Marty Wonsetler and wife Dori, Great Bend, KS; one Daughter, Noreen Applegate and husband Lynn, Lawrence, KS. and one sister, Mary Ann Spence, Lewis, KS.

He was preceded in death by, one brother, Remigius “Bud” Wonsetler and one sister, Charlene Williams.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. A vigil service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Melville Farmer

Dateline: Claflin, Kansas

Melville Farmer, 77, died August 5, 2015, at his home in Claflin. He was born October 25, 1937, in Newton County, Arkansas, the son of Harley Porter and Susie (Brewer) Farmer.

A longtime Claflin resident, Melville had worked as a tool pusher and driller, working for Big Springs Drilling.

On May 11, 1956, he married Aletha Mae Ragsdale in Hoisington. She died April 21, 2000.

Survivors include; four sons, Lee Farmer and wife Sherri of Tuttle, Okla., Dale Farmer and wife Lori of Claflin, Marty Farmer and wife Raelene of Claremore, Okla., and Raymond Farmer and wife Erin of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brother, Gene Farmer of Larned; sister, Delphia Mae Armer of Purcell, Okla.; eight grandchidlren and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents; three brothers, Herman, Lyman and Albert Farmer; and a sister, Dorothy Bryant.

John Patrick Keeley

Larned- John “Pat” Patrick Keeley, 90, passed away August 1, 2015, at the Catholic Care Center, Bellaire, Kansas.

He was born November 21, 1924, in Larned, the son of James Edward and Leeta McConnaughhay Keeley. A lifetime area resident, he was a police officer and State Parole Officer, after serving in combat during WWII as a paratrooper in the Army.

He was a member of Buncombe Creek Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He liked to hunt and fish, did woodworking as well as gardening.

On June 8, 1949, in Nashua, Iowa, he married Phyllis Dean Trauer. She passed away January 9, 2010, after 60 years of marriage.

Survivors include: a son, Ed Keeley and wife Laurel, Wichita; a daughter, Pamela Gassmann-Keeley and husband Jürg, Switzerland; brother, Thomas M. Keeley, Dodge City; sister, Merrilee Hester, Gilroy, CA.; four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his wife; a daughter, Sharon Colleen; three brothers, James L. Keeley, Terry Keeley and Justin Keeley.

Funeral service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Dick Ogle presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, KS.

Blanche Lucille Clarkson

Hutchinson – Blanche Lucille Clarkson, 97, passed away July 31, 2015 at the Mennonite Friendship Communities, Hutchinson, KS. She was born April 29, 1918 in Redfield, South Dakota, the daughter of Clare Kent and Minnie May (Holcomb) Walton. A long time area resident she was a waitress/cook and lunch counter manager of the Osco drug store in Hutchinson.

She attended the Methodist Church, Fraternal Organization of Eagles Auxiliary, and loved to play Bingo.

On October 18, 1942 she married George Raymond “Ray” Clarkson. He passed away August 27, 1989.

She is survived by; two sons, Gary Clarkson (Judy), Assaria; Michael Clarkson (Renia), Hutchinson;
three daughters, Linda Mollnow (Dan), Osage City; Peggy Brannan, Arlington; and Nancy Chapman, Hutchinson; ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Bruce; son-in-law, William Brannan; a sister Margaret O’Rorke and four brothers, Kenneth Walton; Henry Walton; Robert Walton; and Arthur Walton.

A Memorial Graveside Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Larned Cemetery, Larned, with Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, KS.
