He served during Korean Conflict in the Army and later the Army Reserves.

He married Ashley Keenan July 14, 2012 at Norton, Kansas.

A Larned resident, he worked in the oilfield all his entire life and currently working for WW Drilling and truly enjoyed his work. He loved to play the guitar. He had the biggest heart, the most contagious smile, and loved to give to others. He loved rock music, his work, his friends, and most especially his family. With great sadness we say, “Bye for now, but not forever.”

He was the loving husband of Ashley Smith, and the amazing father of two beautiful children, Jossalyn and Benjamin Smith. He is also survived by his father: Rick Lee Smith and his wife Rose, Great Bend, KS, his mother: Rayetta L. 1930 – 2015

She was born December 18, 1930 at Great Bend, KS. The daughter of Fred W and Rose Tammen. On April 18, 1951, she married Rex L Fulton at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert, KS. He survives.

She has been a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church. The last 15 years she has focused her time at Grace Lutheran Church, serving on the Alter Guild. She was heavily involved in the Midland Gem & Mineral Society. For the past 35 years she worked as a real estate broker and property manager.

She went home to be with the Lord on July 28, 2015.

Survivors include three sons, Ross and Barb Fulton of Larned, KS; Rick and Beverly Fulton of Manhattan, KS; and Jay and Debbie Fulton of Midland, TX; one sister, Donna and Don Nolde of Larned, KS; Shari Smith of Midland, TX; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred W and Rose Tammen and daughter-in-law, Jean Fulton.
Funeral services will be held 4:00 pm, Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church in Midland with Pastor Robert Pase presiding and viewing at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Midland. Graveside services will be held 10:00 am, Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Albert, KS. Family visitation following.

Larned – Ryan Joy Henderson, 33, passed away July 28, 2015 at his home, Larned.

He was born September 8, 1981 in Larned; the son of Robert L. and Joyce L. Edmonds Henderson. A lifetime area resident; he was a crane rigger for Trand Inc., Pratt, Kansas.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned.

Survivors include; his parents, Robert Henderson, Drumright, Oklahoma; and Joyce Henderson, Larned; two sons, Maximus Joy Henderson and Ryland Ray Henderson, both of the home; a grandmother, Dorothy Edmonds, Larned; a nephew, Zachery Henderson, Larned and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

He was preceded in death by; his daughter, Olivia L. Henderson; a brother, Jeremy R. Henderson; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Henderson and Joy Edmonds.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned with Father Pascal Klein presiding. Vigil Service will be 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Beckwith Mortuary. Mary Lee (Washington) Reed

Mary Lee Reed, age 91 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, died on Friday afternoon, July 24, 2015 at her home.  She was born on December 31, 1923 in McGhee, Arkansas, to Frank and Mary Etta (Adams) Moffit Washington. Mary was united in marriage to Abe Reed, Sr. on December 7, 1941 in Snow Lake, Arkansas.

The family moved to Great Bend in 1946 where she was a long-time resident.  She lovingly raised 14 children and helped raise many others.  In addition to being a home-maker, Mary was an active member of First Baptist Church in Great Bend, and worked at various house-keeping positions.  In past years she worked as a kitchen helper at the Parrish Hotel and was a recess aide at Park Elementary School, both of Great Bend, Kansas.  Mary loved to cook and work in her flower garden.  She had an amazing capacity to love and welcome anyone she met. She particularly loved children, and was a mother to the whole neighborhood.

Mary is survived by six daughters; Bobbie Bradshaw (and husband, Wilburn), Jetmore KS; Varna (Bunny) Johnson, Vera Reed, Betty Underwood, Linda Johnson, all of Great Bend, Kansas; and Lannie Reed of Lewisville, Texas; five sons: Sebon Reed (and wife, Jackie), Willie Reed (and wife, Mary), and Kenneth Dale Reed all of Great Bend, KS; Tommy Reed (and wife, Lisa) of Hays, Kansas; and Abe Reed Jr. of Houston, Texas;  her niece Elizabeth Broils whom was raised in their home; 32 grandchildren, multiple great and great-great grandchildren; and a large extended family.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband Abe Reed, Sr. on January 23, 1988; one daughter, Stella Keith; one son-in-law, James Johnson; six grandchildren, and several great grandchildren; five siblings: Rosie Moon, Goldie Grissom, George Washington, Arthur Bailey, Jr. and  James Moffitt; one nephew James Emerson who was raised in their home.

Steven J. Thomas, age 58 years, passed away at his home in Great Bend, Kansas on July 24, 2015.  Steve was born on July 1, 1957 at Hutchinson, Kansas to Glen L. and Patty L. (Herndon) Thomas.  He grew up in Lebanon, Kansas and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1975. In 1976 he moved to Great Bend and attended Barton County Community College, where he obtained an Associate of Science Degree.  He was united in marriage to Sheena Graham on September 28, 1980 at Great Bend, Kansas. They later divorced.  Over the years Steve worked for several Great Bend area businesses, including Fuller Brush Company, Dowell Schlumberger, Great Bend Manufacturing, 3-D Lumber Company, Kiowa Kitchen, Godfather’s Pizza, and Pizza Hut, and at the time of his death was an Automation Consultant for the Central Kansas Library System, where he had been employed for the past 27 years.  Steve was a longtime member of the Kansas Library Association and had a passion for photography, poetry, and Renaissance Festivals.

Survivors include two sons: Michael S. (and his wife, Amber) Thomas and James R. (and his wife, Toni) Thomas, both of Great Bend, Kansas; seven grandchildren: Sophie, Aeva, Phoebe, Gracelinn, Gabriel, Christian, and Rose Thomas; his mother, Patty L. Thomas of Great Bend, Kansas; one brother, Douglas (and his wife, Jeannea) Thomas of Lebanon, Kansas; his ex-wife, Sheena Thomas of Great Bend, Kansas.  Steve was preceded in death by his father.

            Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas. Linda O. Zielke

Larned – Linda O. Zielke, 66, passed away July 23, 2015, at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

She was born November 4, 1948, in Greene, New York, the daughter of Leonard and Thelma Pierce Oles, a longtime area resident, she was a homemaker.

She was of the Christian faith.

On May 24, 1985, she married Eldon Hays in Ness City. He passed away April 1, 2014. On August 2, 2014 she married Harry Zielke in Rapid City, South Dakota. He survives.

Other survivors include: a brother, Thomas (Gwen) Oles, Leesburg, VA; three stepsons, Dallas Hays, Larned, Thomas Hays, Phoenix, AZ, and Chris (Paula) Zielke, Rapid City, SD; three stepdaughters, Marilyn Montainge, Hawaii, Laura Clarkson, San Francisco, CA and Amanda Zielke, Rapid City, SD; seven step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Dr. David Hales presiding. Friends may sign the register book from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary. Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

Eudale was a Navy Veteran Seaman 1st Class serving during World War II. On September 12, 1945, he married Magdalene T. Tuzicka at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas, she past away December 19, 2012. He was a lifetime Otis resident, serving as Mayor of Otis from 1963 to 1995, while working as a carpenter, farmer, and operating the Otis Cafe with his wife from 1964 to 1997. In May 2001 He received his High School Diploma from Otis High School, and later in 2008 had his first airplane flight on the Central Prairie Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Eudale enjoyed family and friends, fishing, hunting, playing cards, and doing jigsaw puzzles, framing them and giving them away.

Larned – Grace Miller, 90, passed away July 21, 2015 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson.

She was born November 24, 1924 in Hanston, the daughter of John L. and Stella Alma Gulick Hoffman. A long time area resident of Hanston and Larned, she worked as a Nurse Aide at the Larned State Hospital and she also worked at Fuller Brush, Great Bend.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Larned, Women’s Missionary Society, taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School.

She married Lester T. Miller, he passed away September 20, 2000.

Survivors include: a son, Donald L. (Macie) Miller, Vail, AZ; two daughters, Dorothy L. Tilly, Florence, MS and Linda Fry, Moses Lake, WA., ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Glenn and Cecil Hoffman and a sister, M. Ruth Hayes.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with David Clapham presiding. Visitation will be from 9am to 8pm Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, KS.
