Elmer A. Stegman

Belpre – Elmer A. Stegman, 88, passed away March 26, 2015 at Diversicare of Larned.

He was born December 21, 1926 in Ness City, the son of John and Margaret Dinkel Stegman. A longtime area resident, he was a road grader operator for the Belpre Township and Pleasant Valley Township.

He was a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both of Belpre.

On February 12, 1955, he married Hedwig (Hedy) Deiser in Ness City. She passed away October 12, 2001.

Survivors include: two sons, Mike Stegman, Newton and George Stegman, Belpre; three daughters, Mary Ann Haynes and Janet Stegman, both of Larned, Sheila Stegman, Newton; a brother, Virgil Stegman, Salina; a sister, Armella Dechant, Larned; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four step grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary H. Stegman; two brothers, Gilbert and Charles Stegman and a sister, Mary Rose Likes.

Vigil will be at 7p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belpre with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Belpre Catholic Cemetery, Belpre.

Sister Connie Haug, O. P.

Age: 80

Sister Connie Haug (Sister Omer), 80, died March 26, 2015, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend.

Born September 28, 1934, in Seneca, Kan., as Constance Lucille Haug, Sister Connie was the daughter of the late Omer and Lucille Noll Haug. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community in Great Bend August 28, 1952, and pronounced her first vows June 13, 1955. She celebrated fifty years of religious profession in 2005.

Sister Connie taught elementary parochial students in Kansas and Colorado for the first ten years of her religious life. In 1967 she began a second ten-year ministry as religious education teacher in parishes of the Diocese of Wichita KS. She was a pastoral associate in St Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Salina, and in Chanute, and also served in pastoral ministry in Winfield, Arkansas City, and Newton. She retired in 2002.

Sister Connie is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace religious community, and two brothers and eight sisters: Larry, Michael, and Susan Haug, all of Seneca, Kan.; Sister Dominic of Great Bend, Kan.; Doralee Cross of Centralia, Kan.; Gerrianne Henry of Kansas City, Mo.; Jeanne Heiman of Wichita, Kan.; Mary Haug of Hiawatha, Kan.; and Regina Danielle Aldrine and Cathy Wynkoop, both of Topeka, Kan.

Sister Connie’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Saturday March 28, 2015, at 3:00 p.m., where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 30, 2015, with Rev. Andrew Heiman presiding. A wake service will be held Sunday, March 29, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent. Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call at the convent on Sunday March 29, 2015, from noon until the time of the wake, and on Monday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral Mass. Dwight C. Martin, 73, died March 21, 2015, at his home in Hoisington. He was born August 12, 1941, in Ransom, Kansas, the son of Clade and Sylvia (Everhardt) Martin. Dwight graduated from Utica High School, Utica, Kansas. He retired from the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a train dispatcher, after working there for more than 40 years.

Dwight was a member of the Hoisington Masonic Lodge #331, ISIS Shrine in Salina, KS, Russell Shrine Club, Sunflower Shrine Club in Great Bend, KS and was a former president of the Hoisington Chamber of Commerce.

On February 8, 1964, he married Carolyn Kuder in Tribune, Kansas, they were married for 27 years and then later divorced.

Survivors include: three children, Shelley Martin of Great Bend, KS, Jodi Hill and husband Rob of Olathe, KS, Darin Martin and wife Sarah of Claflin, KS; six grandchildren, , Justin Hamit, Kailee Hamit, Tim Hill, Hope Hill, Randall Martin, and Aislee Martin; and two great grandchildren, Hunter Hamit and Taylynn Lloyd.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Verl Martin, and an infant granddaughter, Quinlee Martin.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Nicholson-Ricke Chapel. Inurnment will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday at Utica Cemetery, Utica, Kansas. He married Catherine Rupert January 1, 1949 at Pueblo, Colorado. They later divorced. He then married Billie Jean Webber June 4, 1997 at Westcliffe, Colo. She died October 28, 2002.

Mr. Fox was an Ellinwood, Kansas resident the past two years, moving to be close to his daughter and her family, he was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service.

Mr. Fox was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II.

Carlos Myles Miller

Name of Deceased: Carlos Myles Miller                                           Age: 95

Carlos Myles Miller, 95, died March 21, 2015, at Stafford County Hospital. Born March 12, 1920, in Great Bend, Kansas, he was the son of Clarence and Alverta (Gaunt) Miller. On September 28, 1941, he married Mary Emily Downey. She preceded him in death on September 24, 1994.

Carlos was a life-long resident of Great Bend, graduating from Great Bend High School in 1938 where he was a member of that year’s undefeated football team. When World War II started, he entered the military service in the Army’s 36th Field Artillery Regiment, fighting in the European Theater. Upon returning home he continued his military service in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Having started as a printer’s apprentice at the age of 14, he continued in the profession when he returned from the war. He purchased Vollmer Printing and changed the name to Miller Printers in 1945. He was joined by his son Phillip in 1995, and they co-owned Miller Printers until their deaths. He was a life member, past president and lieutenant governor of Kiwanis and received the Kansas Kiwanian of the Year and the George S. Hixson Fellow awards. Carlos was also honored with 66 years of perfect attendance in Kiwanis. He was past Commander of American Legion Argonne Post 180, member of VFW Post 3111, past member of the Great Bend Cemetery Board, Barton County Historical Society board, Commission on Aging board, and Philatelic Association. Carlos was also involved with the 36th Field Artillery Association, CASA, Meals on Wheels, and Homework Help. He had been an active member of Central Baptist Church since its inception. He served on the church board of trustees as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.

The family owned a cabin near Salida, Colorado, in the San Isabel National Forest where he enjoyed family vacations during many summers. He and Mary were members of the Golden Belt Campers Club as they enjoyed traveling frequently. His hobbies included woodworking, stamp collecting, coin collecting and gardening. One of his favorite past-times was spending time with his kids and grandkids, especially when it involved traveling.

Survivors include three daughters, Jill Pletcher and her husband Tom, Wichita, Kan.; Lisa Edgett and her husband Kenneth, Great Bend; and Lorrie Kromka and her husband Shane, Denver, Colo.; daughter-in-law Maribeth Miller, Great Bend, grandchildren Amy Borgmeyer, Jasmine Pope, Brandon Kromka, Derek Miller, Danielle Henrie, Angie England, and Alicia Courtright; and numerous great- grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Glenn A. Miller and Richard Miller, both of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by two sons, Phillip Miller and Douglas Miller, brother, Merle Miller and sister, Rena Mae Miller.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Central Baptist Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Joan Harrington and Pastor John Grummon officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery, with military rites by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials are requested to Golden Belt Humane Society or Central Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home.

She thought of others instead of herself, helping kids through TRIO, and was always there for her daughter, helping her through school.  She enjoyed quilting and loved her grandson.

She married Melvin Clay Simpson March 13, 1934 at Osceola, Missouri, and at the time of his death had been married 77 years.  He died July 31, 2011.

A Great Bend, Kansas, resident since 1941 coming from Colorado, Mrs. Simpson was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Assembly of God, Great Bend.

She worked with her husband in their business, Murray and Simpson Casing Crews answering the phone. She loved travelling, making many trips in their motor home with church friends. She particularly liked family reunions and never missed one.

Everett L. Eldridge

EldridgeBurdett – Everett L. (Pee Wee) Eldridge, 84, passed away March 21, 2015 at the Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born June 12, 1930 in Valley, Nebraska; the son of Archie L. and Minnie J. Dodson Eldridge. A longtime area resident; he was a manager for Bert and Wetta Sales Inc. for 33 years.

He was of the Christian faith, a member of the American Legion, Burdett and the Lions club, Rozel. He served in the United States Marine Corps.

On October 5, 1957 he married Donna Chandler in North Holywood, California. She survives.

Other survivors include; three sons, Charles, Lexington, Nebraska, Brad (Lori), Highlandville, Missouri and Rod (Trudi), Burdett; two sisters, Lois Thomas, Kearney, Nebraska and Betty Lou (Marvin) Abels, Amherst, Nebraska; seven grandchildren and about 8 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by; a son, Ray.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Brad McCoy presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Brown’s Grove cemetery, Burdett, Kansas with military graveside rites.
