Basil Jantz, 91, passed away June 14, 2019 at Salina Regional Health Center, in Salina, Kansas. She was born November 13, 1927, in Poynor, Missouri to H.C. (Cordrey) and Maudie (Anglin) Spires.

A Salina resident since 2000 coming from Hoisington, Basil was a member of the Hoisington Bible Church and resided at McCall Manor, Salina.

Survivors include: sons: Lloyd Pinon (JoLana) Topeka, KS, Steve Griffin (Kayla) Salina, KS; daughters: Becky Townsley (Gary) of Minneapolis, MN,  Jo Plinsky (Don) of Wichita, KS, Bonny Wohlcke (Chip) of Arvada, CO, Belva Prins (Dave) of Waseca, MN; siblings, Shirley Juby, Clayton Spires, and William “Bill” Spires; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Basil was preceded in death by her husbands, Lloyd E. Pinon, Jess Griffin and Vernon Jantz. Also preceded in death by her siblings Brice Spires, Nadine Beeman, Melba Maggard, Berniece Whitaker, Twilla Brack, and LaVerne Spires.

Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 17, 2019 at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington.  Celebration of Basil’s life services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at Hoisington Bible Church, with Pastor Gary Clark officiating.  Interment will follow at the Hoisington Cemetery.

Dorothy Darlene (Shinn) Sleezer Swalley

Dateline – Claflin 

Dorothy Darlene (Shinn) Sleezer Swalley, 86, died June 12, 2019, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood.  She was born June 8, 1933, in El Dorado, Kansas, the daughter of Bennie R. and Opal Neoma (Hogg) Shinn.

Darlene attended grade school in Silica and Lindsborg. She started High School in Wichita but then graduated from Claflin High School in 1950.  She then went on to graduate from Brown-Mackie School of Business and also completed several business courses from Barton County Community College.

She married Charles Merle Sleezer and they later divorced. She then married Fred Swalley Jr., on March 20, 1953, in Bentonville, Arkansas. He survives. They started their married life in Delaware, Oklahoma, moving later to Harper, Kansas, and finally to Claflin where they have resided for the last 57 years.

Darlene was a smart, methodical, and driven individual.  She was the bookkeeper and part owner of Fry’s Tank Service.  From 1981 to 1988 she owned the Tall Shop in both Great Bend and Garden City and later worked as a secretary for the Family Recovery Center at Clara Barton Hospital and then Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend.

Darlene was an avid reader and a devoted grandmother who loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Fred Swalley, Jr. ; four sons, Rick Sleezer and wife Carolyn of Morrison, Colorado; Bruce Swalley of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Tracy Swalley and wife Cathy of Overland Park, and Brad Swalley of Great Bend; grandchildren, Dallas Sleezer of Lochbuie, Colorado, Gwen Cole and husband Kenny of Hoisington, Sydney Swalley of Daytona, Florida, Tyler Swalley and wife Jessica of Wichita, Olivia Swalley and fiancé Grant Ellis of Overland Park, Jake Swalley of Miami, Florida, Morgan Dodds and husband Greg of Sumter, South Carolina, McKenna Swalley and fiancé Chase Waggoner of Wichita; two step grandchildren, Gavin Brivik of Los Angeles, California and Alex Brivik of Kansas City, Missouri, Jr. Hamby of Brown Valley, California, Robert Hamby and family of San Angelo, Texas, Cynthia Kuntz and family of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carrie Roe and family of Morrison, Colorado, Patricia Jones & family of Peyton, Colorado; and 8 great grandchildren, Royce, Dallas, Braeden, Alexander, Greyson, Juaquin, Joelysia, and Jaylia; and a special cousin, JoyLee Warner and husband Gary of Holyrood.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bennie Shinn, mother, Opal Thompson, step father, R.T. “Bob” Thompson, and a brother, Rev. Ross Shinn.

Friends may call 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Monday, June 17, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Pastor Diana Webster presiding. Burial will follow in Claflin Cemetery.

Clara Edna Cook

GREAT BEND – Clara Edna Cook, 90, passed away on June 7, 2019, in Colorado Springs, CO. She was born April 11, 1929, to Jacob and Salamena (Radke) Boger. She married Carl F. Cook in 1950.

She grew up on the family farm north of Hoisington until she married and moved to Great Bend. She was a very loving mother, homemaker and was very active in her church. She worked for Gibson’s and Fuller Brush. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, being with her family and especially keeping her grandchildren overnight.

Survivors include three daughters, Sally (Gary) Tournear of Great Bend, Anna (Gary) Burke of Great Bend, Pam (Paul) Clark of Peyton, CO; five grandchildren, Garrett Tournear, Kari Lankerd, Amy Larm, Scott Burke, Donny Clark and Amanda Clark; five great grandchildren, Arlon Clark, Tanner Ford, Tommie Lankerd, Kian Tournear, Hayden Clark. She was preceded in passing by her mother and father; husband; one son, Don Cook; one grandson, Carl (Chuck) Tournear; two brothers, Emmanuel and Armen; and five sisters, Wilma, Tillie, Irene, Alvina, and Mary Lou.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 17, 2019, at First Southern Baptist Church, Great Bend. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to First Southern Baptist Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Bennidetta Lee “Bennie” Krier

Dateline – Claflin 

Bennidetta Lee “Bennie” Krier, 67, died May 30, 2019, at her home in rural Claflin, Kansas.  She was born December 12, 1951, in Hoisington, Kansas, the daughter of Dr. Kenneth and Juanita (Hamilton) Jeffrey.  Bennie graduated from Claflin High School in 1969.

Bennie was a homemaker and had worked for Bailey’s Food Bin in Claflin. She was an avid NASCAR fan, especially of the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr., she loved word searches and intricate coloring books, but is best known for being extraordinarily great at cooking and baking.

On January 3, 1970, she married Michael J. Krier. He preceded her in death on December 24, 1987.

She then met Sheldon Jay Rous and they were life partners for 27 years, until his death on February 15, 2019.

Survivors include; three children, Jennifer Dolney and husband Ray of Overland Park, Michael Paul Krier and fiancé Valerie of Shawnee, and Kody Krier of Sabin, Minnesota; her mother, Juanita Jeffrey of Salina; brothers, Gary Jeffrey and wife Shirley of McPherson, Tully Jeffrey and wife Bonnie of Claflin, Troy Jeffrey and wife Melinda of Hesston; two grandchildren, Brittany White of Wichita, and Tyler White of Newton; and a step-granddaughter, Lilly.

She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Kenneth Jeffrey, husband, Michael J. Krier, and partner, Sheldon Jay Rous.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Pastor Don Fisher presiding. Family will greet friends prior to the service from 9 a.m. and until service. Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Beaver, Kansas.

Patrick Thomas Goddard

Patrick Thomas ‘Pat’ Goddard was born April 28, 1956 in Manhattan, KS the son of Jack Olen and Mary JoAnn (Weirauch) Goddard. He passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2019 along with his dog Poodles, his best friend, at his residence in Cortez, CO at the age of 63.

Pat loved his dog Poodles, loved to ride his motorcycle and his bicycle, and he loved to hike in Sand Canyon.

Surviving Pat are his wife, Sherene (Horrocks) Goddard of Cortez, CO; his sons, Jeremiah Goddard (Bryanne) of Arriola, CO, Jack Goddard (Lisa) of Arriola, CO; his step daughter, Alisha Horrocks of Grand Junction, CO; his three grandchildren, Destinee Goddard, Kyler Goddard, Ryder Goddard; five step grandchildren, Martina Horrocks Espinoz, Renaldo Gustemantez, Selena Gustemantez, Grace Burress, Haley Burress; one step granddaughter, Oliva Gustemantez; his brother, Mike Goddard; his sisters, Kay Thompson, Dee Krier, and Jay Barnes. Pat was preceded in death by his parents.

On June 8, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Pats cremated remains will be scattered at Goodman Point on the rim of Sand Canyon. Richard P. Krom

Richard P. Krom, age 81 years, longtime Great Bend, Kansas resident, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, May 29, 2019 at the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus in Great Bend. Richard was born on November 19, 1937 at Raymond, Washington to Philip and Mamie (Jones) Krom. He was united in marriage to Velta Irene Kasselman Reed on January 9, 1970 at Great Bend, Kansas. Richard co-owned and operated B & K Body Shop for a few years, and worked for several years as a machinist for Flexweight, and also worked at Fuller Brush Company for about five years (all of Great Bend, Kansas). He loved fishing, playing guitar, and playing the Kansas Lottery, but especially loved spending time with family.

Richard is survived by one son, Bruce (and his wife, Veronica) Krom of Great Bend, Kansas; one step-daughter, Sue (and her husband, Dan) Gowdy of Great Bend, Kansas; five grandchildren: Lynee Alloway, Lane Meyer, Jacob Krom, Tammy Gowdy, and Craig Gowdy; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Don Krom of Wichita, Kansas. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Velta on June 10, 2011, two children: Philip Krom and Melinda Meyer; a stepson, Jack Kasselman; one grandson, Eric Gowdy; one brother, Robert Krom and two sisters, Nadine Liston and Clara Armour.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Great Bend Cemetery in Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Jon Hembree officiating. Daryl E. Klepper

GREAT BEND – Daryl E. Klepper, 65, passed away May 28, 2019, at his home in Great Bend. He was born March 6, 1954 at Ellinwood, to Clifford & Virginia (Dressler) Klepper. He married Janice Huslig on April 5, 1975, at Odin. She survives.

Coming from Ellinwood in 1980, Daryl was the plant supervisor at Doonan Trailer for 39 years. He was on the board at the Lake Barton Golf Club and Ducks Unlimited. He liked participating in pitch tournaments, golfing, hunting, fishing, woodworking and welding.

Survivors include, his wife, Janice Klepper of the home; two sons, Brett Klepper and wife Julianna of Auburn, NE, and Brad Klepper and wife Caitlin of Leavenworth; two daughters, Stacie Eckels and husband Mike of Ft. Collins, CO, and Deena Plymell and husband Matthew of Lee’s Summitt, MO; his mother, Virginia Klepper ; two brothers, Terry Klepper and wife Mary of Salina, and Brian Klepper of Overland Park; four sisters, Janice Rielly and husband Ron of St. Clairsville, OH, Cheryl Philippi and husband Mike of Manhattan, Michelle Shaheen and husband Mike of Derby, and Lynnette Bernasconi and husband Dave of Hays; and two grandchildren, Luka Klepper and Hannah Klepper. Keith Otto Marcum

GREAT BEND – Keith Otto Marcum, 91, passed away May 28, 2019, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend. He was born on March 21, 1928, at Turon, to Otto H. & Mildred (Riggs) Marcum. He married Marie Parks on November 4, 1961 at Overland Park. She died October 5, 2016.

Keith was an Army Veteran, having served during Korean War, earning the rank of Corporal.  Coming from Topeka in 1969, Keith was a Great Bend resident.  He was an office manager for the State of Kansas Employment Services for 32 years, retiring in 1992.  Keith was an active and prominent member of the First Church of the Nazarene, being awarded the Distinguished Service Award, along with his wife Marie.  Keith was also a member of VFW Post #3111.

Survivors include, one sister, Crystal Burrows of Adams, TN; and one brother, Frank Marcum of Plainville. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie Marcum; and two sisters, Lois Walters and Martha Bennett.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, May 30, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 31, 2019, at First Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend, with Pastor Josh Foster presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Mary Ann Davidson

Dateline – Derby 

Mary Ann Davidson, 71, died May 27, 2019, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita.  She was born June 12, 1947, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Lester and Viola (Krier) Kahler.

A 1965 graduate of Holyrood High School in Kansas, she later attended Fort Hays State College.

On July 30, 1967, she married Dale A. Davidson at the United Church of Christ in Holyrood, Kansas.

They journeyed together throughout his military career with the Air Force. First to Enid, Oklahoma, and then to Vacaville, California. Mary Ann returned to Claflin, Kansas, while Dale was serving in Vietnam. Upon his return they lived in O’Fallon, Illinois, back to Vacaville, California, then to Montgomery, Alabama, back again to O’Fallon, Illinois, onto Bellevue, Nebraska, and then back for one last stop in O’Fallon, Illinois, where they retired before finally moving back to her beloved state of Kansas, settling in Derby, Kansas, in 2017.

Mary Ann was a secretary for 20 years for the O’Fallon School District in Illinois, retiring in 1997.

She actively supported the USO; Victory in the Valley, and the various churches where they lived.  She was an avid KU basketball fan, she loved traveling with family and friends, their many bicycle trips, quilting, cross-stitching, puzzles, spending time with her grandchildren, and of course sunflowers. For those who knew her, every time they see a sunflower, they will think of her and the joy she brought to so many.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 52 years, Dale Davidson of the home; sons, Philip Davidson and wife Trisha of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Andrew Davidson and wife Erin of Caseyville, Illinois; four grandchildren, Drew, Kyle, Chloe, and Cainan Davidson; a brother, Lester Kahler of Haysville, Kansas; numerous cousins from the Kahler and Krier families; and many friends from their journeys around the country with the Air Force and bicycling trips.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2019, with family to receive friends from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, Kansas.

Funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2019, at the United Methodist Church, Claflin, Kansas, with Pastor Diane Webster presiding.  Burial will follow in Claflin Cemetery.
