Harold L. Jackson

Larned – Harold L. Jackson, 90, passed away February 20, 2015 at his home, Larned.

He was born September 10, 1924 in Harrisonville, Missouri; the son of LeRoy and Olivia O. Gordon Jackson. A lifetime area resident; he was a Fire and Safety Officer for the Larned State Hospital.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and loved playing dominos with his friends.

On March 14, 1952 he married Lucille L. Caro in Larned, Kansas. She survives.

Other survivors include; two sons, Lloyd V. Caro (Allison), Larned, and Roy L. Jackson, Tulsa, Ok; three daughters, Harolyn Sanders (Frank), Wichita, Susan Whitaker (Royal), Lenexa and Tina Peters, Larned; a sister, Virginia Duncan, San Francisco, CA; fourteen grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by; three brothers, Roy, George and Eugene; two sisters, Oza Smith and Dollie Jackson and a grandchild.

Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Larned Cemetery with Pastor Paul Runnels presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Larry L. Fleske

Larned – Larry L. Fleske, 55, passed away February 20, 2015 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

He was born October 9, 1959 in Great Bend, KS, the son of Walter W. and Rena J. Eveleigh Fleske. A lifetime area resident of Larned he was Farmer/ Stockman.

He currently attended the First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend and Greensburg and was a past Deacon at the Assembly of God Church, Larned. He loved farming, working with cattle, doing mechanic work and working with the Royal Rangers Youth Ministry. Larry loved giving and devoted his life to helping others in need.

On January 14, 1989, in Great Bend, KS, he married Sharon L. Horner. She survives.

Survivors include: One daughter Amanda Frost, Great Bend; one brother, Alfred Fleske, Larned; one sister, Jana Goodrick, Larned; five Nieces and Nephews, Rodney, Alisha, Jennifer, Jed and Janell.

He was preceded in death by his Parents.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Dwight Dozier presiding. Visitation will be Tuesday and Wednesday 9a.m. to 8p.m. at Beckwith mortuary, Larned. Burial will be at the Larned Cemetery, Larned, KS.

Gerald Penka

Larned – Gerald P. (Short) Penka, 62, passed away January 11, 2015, at his home in Norwood, MA., following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Gerald was born October 15, 1952, in Larned, KS., the tenth child of the late Pete and Hilda (Boor) Penka. He grew up on the family farm near Belpre, graduated from Larned High School, and attended St. Mary of the Plains and Fort Hays State Colleges.

On July 26, 1998, he married Mary Strauss in Iowa City, IA. She passed away on November 4, 2014.

He is survived by his children, Justin, Lawrence, KS., Alisha, Boston, MA., and Nathan, currently deployed in the US Navy; four sisters, Kathy Bowman, Larned, Patricia Klamm, Kansas City, KS., Joyce Sims, Colorado Springs, CO., and Connie Mauney, Pawnee Rock; three brothers, Vernon Penka, Kansas City, KS., Roy Penka, Belpre, KS., and Allen Penka, Dodge City, KS.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty White and Mary Ann Fox and a brother, Larry Penka.

Interment will be at a later date in Belpre, KS., as will be a remembrance celebration.

Joy Louise Camarena

Larned- Joy Louise Camarena, 75, passed away February 18, 2015 at the Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS.

She was born January 4, 1940, in Clay Center; the daughter of Mert and Thelma Whitney Seagrove. Moving to Larned from New Cambria in 1976, she was a Homemaker.

She was an avid bowler and loved to play fast pitch softball, cards and Bingo. She was also a member of the VFW.

On March 22, 1975 in Salina, KS she married Gregory Camarena. He survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Robert Reason, Sedalia, MO, David Reason, Euless, TX, Ricky Reason and wife Jolene, Larned; two sisters, LaFaye Hayes, Salina, KS and AdaAnn Yost, AZ; two brothers, John Seagrove, AZ and George Seagrove, Topeka, KS; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son Billy Reason.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Mary Beth Herrmann pictureLarned- Mary Beth Herrmann, 59 went to be with the Lord February 18, 2015 at Diversicare of Larned, quietly and peacefully after a long battle with cancer. Mary was a born again Christian who loved the Lord with all her heart, mind and soul.

She was born February 23, 1955 at Kinsley, the daughter of Quentin J. and Lucy W. Tholen Herrmann. A lifetime area resident, she was a Registered Nurse and Administrator at the Pawnee County Health Department.

She was a member of the Modern Homemaker FCE, Pawnee Co. Community Health Organization, Daughters of Isabella, Class of Leadership of Larned, Sacred Heart Pastor Parish Committee, Past President of Pawnee Co. Emergency Management Region and a Communion Stewart. She graduated from Barton County Community College with an A.A. in Nursing and also from Barclay College with a B.S. in Business Administration.

Survivors Include: her mother, Lucy Herrmann, Kinsley; one brother, Mike (Jana) Herrmann, Kinsley; one sister, Dee (Gary) Kaster, Burlington, CO; one brother-in-law, Jerry Bates, Lamar, CO; twelve nieces and nephews and eight great nieces and nephews who were the light of her life and her best friend, Elizabeth (Bruce)Griffin, Larned.

She was preceded in death by her father, Quentin J. Herrmann and her sister, Pat Bates.

Celebration of life will be 10 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary. He was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #862, and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #646, all of Great Bend.

He was a United States Army Reserve veteran, serving during the Vietnam Conflict.

He married Donita Kay Morris November 1, 1997 at Great Bend, Kansas.

An Ellinwood resident, he worked many years doing manufacturing work and then after acquiring his commercial driver’s license, he became a truck driver for various companies.

He served twenty-six years in the United States Army, with tours in Honduras, Bolivia, Kosovo, and Iraq.

He was a member of American Legion Olin Cole Post #392, Bazine and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7428, Hoisington. Mr. Zamarripa was family oriented and a friend to everyone. He loved serving the military, in which he retired in 2013, was a hard worker in providing for his family, and loved playing video games and softball.

Larned – Ronald D. Richards, 72, passed away February 12, 2015, at his home in Larned.

He was born February 12, 1942 in Dodge City, the son of Robert D. and Sophia Fox Richards, a longtime area resident he was a licensed T.V. repair man and an antique collector.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned.

In 1963, he married Mary Loise Keeslar in Larned. She passed away in 1974. In 1978, he married Darlene Vesetecka in Larned. She passed away in 2014.

Survivors include: two daughters, Shelia Richards, Hutchinson and Jessica Wasson, Great Bend; a sister, Virginia Scherling, Newton; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Johnnie D. Richards; two brothers, Turman and Jerry Richards; a sister, Rosemary Richards and a grandson.
