Neta Richards Johnson

Neta Richards Johnson, 100, died January 9, 2015, at Country Place Senior Living. She was born January 31, 1914, in Churdan, Iowa, the daughter of Zala F. and Mabel (Culver) Richards. She married James Benjamin Johnson on September 19, 1943. He died February 6, 1991. She is survived by two daughters; Judy Lenore Johnson, married to Gunter Hofmann of Lincoln, NE., and Ann Elizabeth married to Lon Palmer of Hoisington, KS; and by two grandchildren, Adam D. Palmer, Hutchinson, KS, and Elizabeth Rohrer, Hermosa Beach, CA; and five great grandchildren.

Neta was preceded in death by her sister. Mazie Richards Nuzum, and by her brother, Roscoe Culver Richards.

Neta grew up in Maxwell, Iowa and was reared by her maternal grandmother and step-grandfather after her parents died during the flu epidemic of 1919. After marriage and the birth of her two daughters, Neta moved with her family to Hays, KS. She was active in the First United Methodist Church and was secretary for the Farm Bureau Agency of Hays. Neta loved to travel and spent may happy times accompanying her husband who was a traveling magazine salesman.

The final thirteen years of her life were spent at Country Place Senior Living. She was one of the original occupants and loved her time there.

A private family interment will take place on Monday, January 12, 2014, at Mt. Allen Cemetery, Hays, Kansas, with a graveside service to be held later in April.

She and her husband owned Westlawn Salvage until 1956 when they moved to Great Bend. They then opened their new business, A & A Iron & Metal.

She was a member of Grace Community Church, Great Bend. She loved fishing, hunting, gardening, bowling, and bingo.

Mari Jo Ray, 77, died January 3, 2015, at Almost Home, Great Bend, Kansas. She was born September 20, 1937, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Schneweis) Peschka. Mari Jo attended Hoisington High School. She worked as a telephone operator, and was also a police dispatcher, city cashier, city clerk and city manager.

On September 9, 1954, she married Larry G. Ray in Beaver, Kansas. He died August 26, 1989. A lifetime resident of Hoisington she was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the City Clerk Association.

Survivors include: son, Jim Ray and wife Sandy of Hoisington; daughter Jeanie Rodie and husband Shane of Hoisington; six grandchildren, Elysia Bell and husband Jim of Great Bend, Erick Bosquez and husband Cesorio of Seattle, Washington, Ethan Rowley and wife Deidra of Great Bend, Jessica Khalil and husband Sami of Overland Park, Kansas, Jeremiah Ray and wife Lauren of Wichita, and Rhianna Ray of Fort Hood, Texas; and 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Bud, Jack, Jim, and Elmer Peschka, and four sisters, Winnie Krier, Marie Peschka, Jean Erickson and Margaret Peschka.

Emerson Davis obit photoHOISINGTON, Kan. — Emerson J. Davis, 80, passed away Friday, January 2, 2015, at the Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, Kan. He was born March 2, 1934 on the homestead in rural Galatia, Kansas, the son of David and Lena (Hester) Davis. He attended school at Hoisington and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Newkirk on October 8, 1953. He was a truck driver for Kansas Brick and Tile for many years, later working for Albion Township. He was a member of the Hoisington Volunteer Fire Department for twenty-five years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and recently enjoyed riding his scooter around Hoisington.

Survivors include his wife Betty, of the home; two sons, Jeff Davis (Lisa), Great Bend; and Dave Davis (Carla Rodie), Great Bend; one daughter, Rebecca Vonfeldt, Edmond, Okla.; one sister, Kay Ree Johnson (Larry), Great Bend; two brothers, Albert Davis, Hoisington; and Wayne Davis (Donna), Weatherford, Okla.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and “little lap dog” Mitzi. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Arnold Davis, Richard Davis, Evan Davis, and Russell Davis, and one sister, Geneva Davis.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 6, 2014 at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with the Rev. Roy Savage officiating. Burial will be in Hoisington Cemetery, Hoisington.
