Luther Morgenstern, 98, died December 6, 2014, at  Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center.  He was born August 23, 1916, on the farm in Russell County, the son of Sam G. and Lena (Radke) Morgenstern. Luther was a WWII veteran serving in the Army as a Private First Class, from 1941 to 1945. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.  Luther was a farmer and a contract pumper in the oil fields, retiring in 1980.  He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend and the V.F.W., Hoisington.

On August 23, 1949, he married Helen Margheim in Hoisington.  She died February 11, 2008.  Survivors include; a brother, Martin Morgenstern of Great Bend.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, a brother, Ralph Morgenstern, and a sister, Amanda Morgenstern.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2014, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Mark Galbraith, presiding. Burial will be in Hoisington Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard and American Legion Riders Flag Line. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, 415 N. Main, Hoisington. He was facilities manager for the Great Bend Post Office. Mr. Nobles was a lifetime Great Bend, Kansas resident.

He was a United States Navy veteran, serving during World War II.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Good Sams Camping Club, Black Heritage Club, American Legion Argonne Post 180, past president of NAACP, Great Bend Housing Authority Board, Barton County Young Men’s Organization Board, Barton County Arts Council, Barton County Community College Cougar Booster Club. He was a Great Bend Police Department Auxiliary officer, and enjoyed working the gate at the Kansas State Fair.

Frank E. Thurman, age 65 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Friday evening, December 5, 2014 at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.  Frank was born on September 25, 1949 at Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Arthur and Ethel (Deeder) Thurman. He was united in marriage to Mary Walsh on June 29, 2000 at Council Grove, Kansas.  Frank was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 2006, having moved there from Alta Vista, Kansas.  He loved NASCAR, and had a passion for fixing up old cars and spending precious time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Thurman of Great Bend, Kansas; four sons:  Frank Thurman, Jr. (and his wife, Kerith) of St. Louis, Missouri, Peter Leyva (and his wife, Beth) of Emporia, Kansas, Shane Leyva (and his wife, Jessica) of Great Bend, Kansas, and Andrew Rush of Chase, Kansas; one daughter, Shantel Rhoufiry of Denver, Colorado; six grandchildren:  Sarah (Thurman) Guiet, Isaac Leyva, Keira Leyva, Jacob Leyva, Mya Leyva, and Ryleigh Meyers; two brothers:  Robert Thurman of Denver, Colorado and Ed Thurman of Washington; three sisters:  Alona Rae Amos and Judy McCalip, both of Denver, Colorado and Joanne Stone of Council Grove, Kansas.  Frank was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers (Rick and Donald Thurman), and one sister (Doris Jean Thurman).

According to his wishes, cremation has been chosen.  Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas.  A Memorial luncheon in Denver, Colorado is being planned on Saturday, December 27, 2014 – once finalized, details will be available from the family.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Heartland Cancer Patient Care and Support Endowment Fund through the Golden Belt Community Foundation, 1307 Williams, P.O. He was a 1948 graduate of Great Bend High School and received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Kansas State University in 1953. He was a United States Army veteran, serving in Korea and Japan. He married Loreta J. “Reta” Hill September 28, 1958 at Hoisington, Kansas. A lifetime Great Bend, resident, Mr. Brack began work at KCKT-TV as a sales representative until February 1956, when he started work for American State Bank and Bank IV, retiring in 1991 after more than 35 years of service.

Mr. Brack attended First Christian Church, Great Bend. He was a member of A. F. & A. M. Lodge #15, American Legion Argonne Post 180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111, B. P. O. Elks Lodge #1127, DAV, and Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, all of Great Bend. He was a life member of the Kansas State University Alumni Association, served more than 26 years on the Great Bend Housing Authority, was charter director of the Center for Counseling, and was past City of Great Bend treasurer.

Philip James Weber

Garfield – Philip James Weber, 74, passed away December 7, 2014 at his home, Garfield.

He was born April 6, 1940 in Sheridan County, Kansas; the son of Martin and Hazel Schlicher Weber. A longtime area resident; moving from Hoxie to Garfield; he was a security officer for the Larned State Hospital and also worked for the Pawnee County CO-OP in Garfield.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Larned.

On February 6, 1965 he married Mary K. Unruh at Salina, Kansas. She survives.

Other survivors include; a son, Ty Weber, Larned; two daughters, Cherie Eakin, Larned and Crystal Kerns, Highland; a brother, Max Weber; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by; two brothers, Kenneth Weber and Bill Weber and a sister Doris Arnold.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, Larned with Pastors P.J. Southam and Margaret Gary presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Velma H. McMillin

Velma H. McMillin, 90, died December 4, 2014, at Via Christi Hospital, St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas. She was born January 20, 1924, in Melvern, Kansas, the daughter of Oscar and Hazel (Goldsmith) Beck. A resident of Hoisington since 1940, Velma worked as a florist for many years and she was also the co-owner of Trinkets and Treasures an antique shop in Hoisington. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hoisington, the Order of the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, and the Grand Cross of Color. Velma was an avid sports fan cheering for the Chiefs, Kansas University and the Green Bay Packers.

On November 30, 1940, she married H.D. McMillin in Ottawa, Kansas. He died July 23, 1993.
Survivors include; daughters, Alyce Chambers and husband Mike of Hoisington, Arlene Lewis of Viola; daughter-in-law, Crista McMillin of Wichita; son-in-law, Mike Aylward of Hoisington; siblings; Ione Monroe of Osage City, Irene Sattler of Newton, Russell Beck of Emporia, Anita Faulkner of Osage City; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and a son of the heart, Kervin Miller and wife Liz of Pleasant Hill, MO.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H.D., son, Ed McMillin, daughter, Janice “Jany” Aylward, son-in-law, Marvin Lewis, siblings;, Freeman Beck, Oscar I. Beck, Elmer Beck, Winona Brown, granddaughter, Kathryn Chambers, and great grandson, Conner Aylward.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was a cook for USD #428, a secretary for Gibson, Titus and Stafford and retired as a clerk for Centel.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, where she was a past officer. She was also a 4-H leader and worked at Noah’s Ark Preschool.
