Growing up, Melba worked as a waitress. Melba married Leroy Maggard July 1, 1957 at Clayton, NM. After marriage, they ran a filling station in Hoisington and later in Great Bend. Upon moving to Liberal, Melba worked at Beech Aircraft until her husband became ill and required her care. They moved back to Hoisington in 1998. After the death of her husband, June 2, 2001, she became active at the Hoisington Bible Church with the children’s Bible program, and also was a school bus helper with her brother Clayton Spires. Melba was a friend to many and will be sadly missed by all who knew her and her family.

Calista was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Altar Society, Life Member of V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #3111, and Life Member of American Legion Argonne Post 1080, all of Great Bend. Calista was a former member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington.

Sister Patricia Martinez, OP

OBITUARY NOTICE: Sister Patricia Martinez OP

Sister Patricia Martinez, 89, died Friday, November 14, 2014, at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas.

Born May 13, 1925, in Little River KS, as Pasquala Martinez, Sister Patricia was the daughter of the late Gregorio and Placida Gomez Martinez. She entered the Dominican Sisters Community in Great Bend October 10, 1943, and pronounced her first vows August 13, 1946. She celebrated sixty-five years of religious profession in 2011.

Sister Patricia was a life-long teacher. She began in 1947 and taught elementary students of Catholic parochial schools in some capacity until 2011. She was principal of four different schools, ministered in Kansas and Nebraska, and taught in all the grades from 1- 8 at some time during her ministry. She taught in sixteen different Kansas schools in Sharon, Dubuque, Willowdale, Seward, Clonmel, St. Leo, Belpre, Great Bend, Ellinwood, Chase, Cunningham, Schulte, Hutchinson, and Wichita in Kansas and in Lawrence, Nebraska. After full time teaching she still tutored part time for a while and worked with Head Start children.

Sister Patricia is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace religious community, and one brother and three sisters: John, Antonia (Toni), Asencia (Cindy), all of McPherson KS, and Patrosinia (Pat) Oltmanns of Wichita KS.

Sister Patricia’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 4:00 p.m., where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2014, with Rev. Ken Van Haverbeke presiding. A wake service will be held Monday, November 17, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent (see chapel address above).

Joseph Kaiser

Joseph ”Joe L.” Kaiser, 98, died November 12, 2014, at the Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born February 6, 1916, on the farm in Claflin, KS, the son of Lawrence and Louisa (Fonscher) Kaiser. Joe was a farmer and a stockman. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #2630, both of Odin, and the Holy Name Society at Dubuque, Kansas.

On August 30, 1938, he married Regina Marie Debes in Odin, Kansas. They then moved to Dubuque, Kansas and lived there until returning to Claflin in 1962. She died December 13, 2005.

Survivors include: six children, Corrine Finger of Hoisington, Marvin Kaiser and wife Bernice of Hays, Gilbert Kaiser and wife Kathy of Kingman, Ronald Kaiser and wife Lucille of Hoisington, Jolene Rziha and husband Jim of Great Bend, and Marilyn Ricke of Hoisington; twelve grandchildren, Paula Beck and husband Andy, Brian Kaiser and wife Lynne, Chris Kaiser, Roger Kaiser and wife Katrina, Eric Kaiser, Lori Hogle and husband Jason, Andy Kaiser, Brad Kaiser, Troy Kaiser and wife Susan, Dale Kaiser and wife Sonja, Gina Dodd and husband Casey and Mona Dodd and husband Major Chad Dodd USMC; and 27 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, four brothers; Walter, Fred, Larry and Leo Kaiser; five sisters, Mary Wondra, Lena Gerstenkorn, Anna Kaiser and two infant sisters, Olivia and Virginia Kaiser; two sons-in-law, Ted Ricke and Larry Finger.

Vigil service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, November 16, 2014, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 17, 2014, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin with Fathers Ted Stecklein and Pascal Klein, celebrants. Isidro Alvarez, age 73, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away at his home in Great Bend on Tuesday afternoon, November 11, 2014. Mr. Alvarez was born on May 15, 1941 at Morelos, Durango, Mexico and lived in Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico prior to moving to Great Bend five years ago. He worked as a restaurant cook prior to his retirement and enjoyed gardening. Mr. Alvarez attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend.

Survivors include three sons: Javier Alvarez of Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico, Joel Alvarez of Del Rio, Texas, and Daniel Alvarez of Great Bend, Kansas; three daughters: Marina Narvaez and Rosario Alvarez, both of Great Bend, Kansas and Consuelo Alvarez of Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico; fourteen grandchildren; two brothers: Roberto and Pablo Alvarez, both of Durango, Mexico; two sisters: Marcela Alvarez of Acuna Coahuila, Mexico and Elisa Alvarez of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico. Mr. Alvarez was preceded in death by his parents, his wife (Leobarda Alvarez on September 23, 2000), and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at a future date in Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico with burial there in the Panteón Munícípal Amistad Eterna Cemetery. There will be no local services or visitation. Linda E. Pettitt, 68, died November 8, 2014, at her home in Hoisington. She was born April 24, 1946, in Liebenthal, Kansas, the daughter of Rudolph & JoAnn (Basgall) Schuckman. In her early years Linda worked as a CNA and later was a truck driver. On November 13, 1990, she married Burl E. Pettitt, Sr., and became a farmwife in Conway, Missouri. Burl and the farm were where her happiest memories were. He died on May 29, 2002. She moved from Conway to Hoisington in 2006 to be near her family.
She is survived by a daughter, Virginia McGinnes and companion Justin Mintz of Hoisington; mother, JoAnn Schuckman of La Crosse; brother, Dennis Schuckman and wife Dottie of LaCrosse; grandchildren, Dustin Rich, Kristi Rich, Christopher Sohm and wife Kristi, and Spencer Mintz; four great grandchildren, Aiden Roach, Andrew Roach, Angelene Sohm and Zachary Sohm; four nieces, two nephews; seven great nephews, seven great nieces; four great great nieces; and two great great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, father, a daughter, Linda Renea Sohm, an infant brother, two infant sisters, and her beloved dog, Miss Pooh.
According to her wishes cremation has taken place and there will be a private family inurnment in Conway Cemetery, Conway, Missouri at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Golden Belt Humane Society in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, 415 N. Main, P.O. Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.
