Larry Thomas Haxton

Larry Thomas Haxton, 70, died October 26, 2014, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born Sept. 30, 1944, in Great Bend, the son of Wallace and Louise (Werhahn) Haxton. Larry graduated from Chase High School in 1962. He joined the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1966. A resident of Claflin since 1980, Larry worked as a gauger for Kaw Pipeline,was then a co-owner of Folk Well and Lease, and later retired in 2006 from the Farmers CO-OP in Claflin. Larry was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Odin Knights of Columbus. Larry loved playing sports but even more so watching his children and grandchildren play sports.
On Nov. 29, 1969, he married Mary “Janie” Steffan in Chase. She survives. Other survivors include; four children, Monte Haxton and wife Robyn of Argonia, Gina Oberle and husband Doug of Victoria, Kyle Haxton and wife Amy of Hoisington, and Kevin Haxton and wife Emily of Ellsworth; sister, Shirley Long and husband Bob of Chase; brother, Duane Haxton and wife Barbara of Newton; eleven grandchildren, Karly Oberle, Caden Oberle, Zachariah Haxton, Quincy Cross, Mason Haxton, Avery Haxton, Aubreigh Haxton, Kanye Cross, Leyton Haxton, Khary Cross and Elyse Haxton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Thursday, October 30, 2014, with a vigil service and Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m., Wednesday, all at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Claflin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Clara Barton Hospital Foundation or Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, P.O. Patricia Mae “Patty” Smith

Patricia Mae “Patty” Smith, 73, died October 25, 2014, at Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan, Kansas. She was born March 24, 1941 in Emporia, Kansas, the daughter of Wm. C. and Velma (Brown) Phillips. Patty graduated from Claflin High School in 1959 and then attended Fort Hays State College Nursing School. She later graduated from the Academy of Beauty in Great Bend and then taught classes there. She had Patty’s Beauty Salon which she ran for many years from her home in Claflin. A longtime resident of Claflin, Patty was also the owner and operator of Brackeen Line Cleaning Inc.. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Claflin, the Clafin Order of the Eastern Star and the NRA.

She married Daniel R. Smith on August 19, 1961, in Claflin. He died Sept. 18, 2000. She enjoyed traveling the country with her husband, but mostly enjoyed time spent at home with her kids and grandkids.
Survivors include; sons, Darrin Smith and wife Cathy of Wilson, Kyle Smith and wife LaVeneia of Claflin ; daughter, Danette Schartz and husband Ed of Claflin; mother-in-law, Margaret Smith of Great Bend; brother-in-law, Carey Smith of Overland Park; seven grandchildren, Derek Smith, Courtney Swart and husband Martin, Preston Smith, Ross Schartz and wife Sarah, Bethany Schartz, Hillary Schartz and Breanna Schartz; and one great grandchild, Jaxson Schartz and two more on the way.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at the United Methodist Church of Claflin, with Rev. Gene Langhofer presiding. Friends may call 1 to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Claflin Cemetery. BENNY M. WILLIAMS

BENNY M. WILLIAMS

Benny M. Williams, age 57 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday evening, October 22, 2014 at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, Kansas. Benny was born on January 12, 1957 at Vallejo, California to Benny O. and Jacqueline D. (Mayfield) Williams. After graduation from High School, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he spent the next two years. Following his discharge from the Navy he worked in Navy shipyards in Los Angeles and San Diego, California. Benny later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was united in marriage to Diane L. Roberts on April 22, 1979. The couple moved to Kansas from Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1987, where Benny worked as a Corrections Officer at the Winfield Correctional Facility in Winfield, Kansas for eight years. The couple then moved to Great Bend. Benny enjoyed his grandchildren and traveling when the couple was able.

Survivors include his wife, Diane L. Williams of Great Bend, Kansas; one son, Brandon Williams of Great Bend, Kansas; three daughters: April and Amy Williams, both of Great Bend, Kansas and Ronnie Lynn of Tulsa, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren; his father, Benny O. Williams of San Diego, California; two sisters: Kathy (and her husband, Gary) Bann of Carrie, North Carolina and Karen Lynch of Winfield, Kansas. Benny was preceded in death by his mother, Jacqueline D. Williams.

Dale OtteLarned – Dale Otte, 76, passed away October 17, 2014 at the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

He was born January 4, 1938 in Great Bend. The son of Wilmer and Leah Dorfshaffer Otte. A longtime area resident he was a farmer/stockman.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Pawnee County Relay for Life, Santa Fe Trail Center Wet/ Dry Routes Chapter, Pawnee County 4-H Leader, Farm Bureau past president and a past board member for the Pawnee County COOP; and most recently received the Faye Anderson Award.

On September 16, 1956 he married Karen Rice in Great Bend. She survives.

Other survivors include; two daughters, Lori Blakesley and husband Rick, Hutchinson and Kim Gevara and husband Steve, Larned; a sister, Lois Schimmels, Clinton, OK; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Fisher, Matthew Finger, Jacob Finger, Audree Senestraro, Emile Blakesley, Tanner Blakesley and Bryce Gevara; and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by; a daughter Jennifer Finger.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. David Hales presiding. Friends may sign the register from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be at a later date.

Mr. Shelton was a lifetimeGreat Bend, Kansas resident.

He was a United States Navy veteran, serving during the Vietnam conflict, serving aboard the USS Mauna Kea and the USS Midway.

He was a member of American Legion Argonne Post 180 and the United States Bowling Congress. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and bowler as well as loved drag racing. Above all else, he loved his family.

Gilbert retired from Oil Field Sales.
Mr. Bates was a Dallas, Texas resident for the last several years coming from Great Bend
He served during World War II in the Navy from 1943 to 1946.
Gilbert was a former member of the First Assembly of God in Great Bend where he had served as a deacon for many years.
Gil Spent his last several years in Dallas with his family, learning the city and enjoying new experiences. Not surprising to those who knew him, stubborn and independent to the end. Most importantly, always a faithful servant to his Lord, leaving his family an incredible Christian heritage.
