Reymundo Martinez, age 27 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend. Reymundo was born on December 29, 1986 at Garden City, Kansas to Martin Martinez and Lupe (Rubio) Martinez. He moved to Great Bend, Kansas at an early age and worked construction with his godfather, Arturo Escamilla. Reymundo was a hard worker who enjoyed life.

Survivors include one son, Cayden Rey Martinez of Ellinwood, Kansas; his father, Martin Martinez of Mexico and his mother, Lupe Rubio of Colorado; three brothers: Reynaldo Martinez (his twin brother), Herman and Ernesto Montez, all of Great Bend, Kansas; one sister, Guadalupe Martinez of Mexico.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, October 17, 2014 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Prince of Peace Parish at Great Bend, Kansas with Father Don Bedore, celebrant. Interment will be in the Great Bend City Cemetery North, Great Bend, Kansas. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, with a Vigil Service and Rosary at 7:00 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. She married Lester Koochel September 22, 1938 at Timken, Kansas.  He died October 11, 1990.

She was a bus driver for Otis-Bison School District and managed K’s Café until her retirement.

Mrs. Koochel was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1997 coming from Albert, Kan.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Altar Society, and church choir, all of Timken. She was a wonderful cook, homemaker, and seamstress.

Kirby was a Hoisington resident, living in Fort Smith, Arkansas from 1976-1985 before returning to Hoisington.
He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Kirby graduated in 1971 from Hoisington High School.  He was active in both vocal music and band programs, excelling at the trumpet.  A very talented artist, Kirby was also active in the high school art department, winning top awards at many contests and shows.   His artistic talents and his love for music were meshed into his career in band instrument repair.   He was a grand tinkerer, who always had many projects going in the garage.   His love for cars, motorcycles, guns, and knives, made for some of his favorite tinkering projects. One of his favorite past times was fishing at the Smoky Hill River, never bringing much home but a relaxed piece of mind. He loved his daughters and granddaughters more than life itself.

Donitta Ann Conrad, 50, of Burwell, Nebraska died at home on October 11, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burwell. Rev. Greg Volzke will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 -8 p.m. at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell, Nebraska. Burial will be Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Hoisington Cemetery in Hoisington, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the For the Cure, Ropers in Need or the Community Memorial Health Center.

Donitta was born January 13, 1964 in Ransom, Kansas to Donald and Ruby (Armer) Popp. She went to elementary school at Pawnee Rock, Kansas and graduated from Hoisington High School in 1982. After graduation she attended Barton County Community College at Great Bend, Kansas where she received her associate’s degree.

Donitta married JP Conrad on April 27, 1985 in Hoisington, Kansas. They lived in Kansas for a time before moving to Burwell, Nebraska in 1987. Donitta later worked at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell as a nurse. In 2005 she attended Mid Plains Community College in North Platte, Nebraska to continue her nursing education.

Donitta and JP moved to Grand Island, Nebraska in 2010. Donitta was a nurse at Tiffany Square in Grand Island. In 2012 Donitta and JP moved back to Burwell where she continued to work at the Community Memorial Health Center until her health forced her to quit.

Donitta was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was and avid gardener and an outstanding cook. She loved the outdoors and was very passionate about her work and care for the elderly and she loved to spoil her grandkids.

Donitta is survived by her husband JP Conrad of Burwell, Nebraska. Two children, Bruce and Maggie Conrad of Bartlett, Nebraska and Jessica and Evan Goodwin of Hastings, Nebraska and four grandchildren, Chet, Gracie, Natalie and Bozley Conrad. Her parents, Don and Ruby Popp of Hoisington, Kansas. Two brothers, Greg and Marla Davidson and DeWayne Davidson all of Great Bend, Kansas and a sister, Glenda and Brett Cloutier of Clermont, Florida and nieces and nephews.

Donitta was preceded in death by her grandparents, Esther and Herman Popp and Lena Jenkins and Leo Armer. Her uncle Duane Popp, a cousin, Kevin Popp and her father-in-law, Bob Conrad.

She and her husband owned and operated Don’s Food Mart and she retired from Dillons Pharmacy. Mrs. Dreiling was a Great Bend, Kansas, resident since 1954, coming from Chase, Kansas.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Altar Society, and Daughters of Isabella, all of Great Bend. She loved her grandchildren and watching sports, especially the University of Kansas Jayhawks and New York Yankees.

Lila Jean Haberman

Lila Jean Haberman, 80, died Oct. 11, 2014, at her daughter’s home in Olmitz. She was born Jan. 22, 1934, in Galatia, the daughter of Henry and Martha (Steinert) Wagner.

She married Jim Stoss on July 30, 1952. He died Dec. 25, 1979. She then married Larry Haberman on March 30, 1991. He died Dec. 8, 2006. Lila Jean was a resident of Hoisington coming from Olmitz Lila along with her husband Jim owned and operated Jim’s Place and the Olmitz Grocery till the early 70’s. She later worked as a bartender for the Eagle’s Lodge in Great Bend. Lila Jean was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz.

Survivors include; three daughters, Debra New and husband Tony of Olmitz, Roberta Spangenberg and husband Troy of Hudson, Bonita Penka and husband Tom of Olmitz; a sister, Alice Batt of Hoisington; and six grandchildren, Jim New and wife Kelsey, Jason New, Kendra Spangenberg, Katlyn Spangenberg, Tap Penka and wife Lindsay, and Sara Penka.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, a brother, Waldine Wagner; and two sisters, Doris Karst, and Eldora Brower-Ford.

Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz with Father Anselm Eke as Celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemtery, Olmitz. John D. Trimmer

 John D. Trimmer, age 65 years, of Great Bend, Kansas and formerly of Pawnee Rock and Dundee, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, October 8, 2014 at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend.  John was born on February 11, 1949 at Belleville, Kansas to George Franklin and Edna Alene (Larr) Trimmer. He graduated from Republic County Schools in 1965 and was united in marriage to Diana Levingston on June 10, 1976 at Pawnee Rock, Kansas.  John worked as a Chain Hand in the Oilfield prior to his retirement. He enjoyed rock collecting, watching wrestling, and spending time with family.

            Survivors include six sons: Joe Paul (and his wife, Jennifer) Trimmer of Dundee, Kansas, Joseph, Timothy, Josh, and Ian Trimmer, all of Great Bend, Kansas, and Matt Harvey of Houston, Texas;  six daughters: Tonya, Audrey, Heather, and Melissa Trimmer, all of Great Bend, Kansas, Christina Trimmer of Mankato, Kansas and Virginia Trimmer of Enid, Oklahoma; sixteen grandchildren; one sister, Freda Brown of Mankato, Kansas.  John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife (Diana Trimmer on July 22, 2013), and one brother (George Trimmer).

Viola Mae Yost

Yost PicViola Mae Yost, age 99, passed away peacefully of natural causes on October 7, 2014 at Locust Grove Village in Lacrosse, Kansas. She was born Viola Mae Wimmer in Harlan, Kansas on July 25, 1915 to Harvey Lester and Mary Ann Zion Wimmer.

Viola graduated from Portis High School, attended college at York College for two years, then finished her teaching education at Fort Hays State University. She enjoyed a long and successful teaching career to include Alexander (for 31 years), Nekoma, and Heizer. Additionally she served as a substitute teacher for McCracken and Lacrosse. She served as a correspondent for the Rush County News for eleven years, played piano and organ for the Alexander United Methodist Church for over 62 years, accompanied competitive musical performances for music students and was in high demand to perform at weddings and various social events.

After moving to Hays later in life, Viola found renewed passion for teaching while volunteering as a Foster Grandmother at Holy Family Elementary. She also enjoyed socializing with her friends at her retirement apartment complex and the Hays United Methodist Church.

Family was always a priority for Viola as well as service in her church that included serving as a delegate for the United Methodist Annual Conference.

Viola married Harry Yost on June 12, 1938. He preceded her in death on August 2, 2000. She was also preceded in death by infant sister Marilyn Wimmer, brother De Wimmer, sister Sally Smith, and daughter Mary Kay McEvoy.

Viola is survived by sister Vernita Nickel of Riverside, CA, son Gary Yost and wife Joy, Bison, KS, son Paul Yost, San Antonio, TX, daughter Dorothy Plum and husband Bill, Kansas City, MO, and son John Yost and wife Sara of Olathe, KS. Also survived by grandchildren Brad Westerman, Brigette Ellis, Melinda Ellis, Rick Yost, Michelle Rieman, Mike Yost, Skyler Yost, Echo Sandburg, Summer Schwindt, Cale Yost, Mackenzie Yost and 24 great grandchildren with 2 great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Alexander Methodist Church located at 103 E. Kepner Ave, Alexander, KS 67513 at 10:30am on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Lunch will be provided after the service in the church basement.
