Toby Jay Leech

GREAT BEND – Toby Jay Leech, 49, passed away May 16, 2019, at his home in Great Bend. He was born on February 9, 1970 at Plainville to Morris and Reva (Sacket) Leech, Jr.

A long time Barton County resident, Toby was a driller for Pickrell Drilling in Great Bend. He liked to do mechanic work and loved 4 wheelers and off roading. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving his passing are his parents of Great Bend; one son, Andrew Taylor of Great Bend; two brothers, Todd Leech and Tyler Leech, both of Great Bend; two sisters, Connie Daniels of Fuita, CO, and Christy Leech of Great Bend; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by long-time companion, Dorothy Schmidt; one brother, Terry Leech; and two sisters, Cindy Leech and Carla Leech.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Toby Leech Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

James “Russell” Newcomb

James “Russell” Newcomb, age 64 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away at his Great Bend home on Sunday morning, May 19, 2019 after a lengthy illness. Russell was born on June 22, 1954 at Muskogee, Oklahoma to Dr. James R. and Donna (Sorrells) Newcomb. He graduated from Broken Arrow High School in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma in 1972, attended Oklahoma University from 1972-1973, and then transferred to Oklahoma State University, where he graduated in 1976 with a degree in Culinary Arts. He moved to Great Bend, Kansas with his wife Debbie Newcomb in 1995, and worked as the Dietary Manager for Cherry Village Residential Care in Great Bend for many years and later worked as a Prep Cook for the Great Bend Senior Center. Debbie preceded him in death. Russell was united in marriage to Gloria A. Fleischmann on June 10, 2015 at Great Bend, Kansas. He loved fishing and boating on lakes, but his real passion was cooking.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria A. (Fleischmann) Newcomb of Great Bend, Kansas; one daughter, Chelsey H. Dildine of Oklahoma; three grandchildren: Sage, Ben, and Cheyenne Dildine; one great-granddaughter, Lily; one brother, Dr. Brent Newcomb and spouse of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; three sisters: Hope Walker and spouse and Kim Lynn and spouse of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Ann Chambers of Oklahoma. Russell was preceded in death by his parents and his previous wife, Debbie Newcomb.

According to Russell’s wishes, cremation has been chosen. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Father Ted Stoecklein officiating. Marston Vade (Marty) Holman

GREAT BEND – Marston Vade (Marty) Holman, 67, was born in Wichita, KS, on October 11, 1951. He died May 17, 2019 in Wichita at Wesley Medical Center peacefully surrounded by his family. His parents were Melvin Vade Holman and Elva Mae Jeffries Holman. Marty was raised in rural Johnson County and loved the outdoors. From an early age he played any sport with a ball – baseball, basketball, football, and volleyball, always dragging his friends behind. He attended Johnson County Community College, Kansas University, and was graduated from Baker University. His commitment to youth led him to work at Shawnee Mission Medical Center as the activities coordinator on the mental health unit for many years. 

In 1983, he married Dee Jo Fitzsimmons and to them was born a son, MacDaniel Vade Holman. In 1991 the family moved to Great Bend, KS, where Marty was actively involved in the sports, scouting, and youth activities surrounding his son, especially cross country. Marty took a job with USD 428 special services as a job coach and Wild Life Center manager. Later he became a bus driver and a member of the summer mowing crew for the district before his retirement.

Marty loved his family, was a hard worker, a good coach, great father and grandfather. The outdoors was his space where he enjoyed grilling, yard work, bird watching, and fishing in Colorado. His generous nature, kind heart, infectious laugh and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Dr. Melvin Vade Holman and Elva Mae Holman. He is survived by his son, MacDaniel Vade Holman and wife Ashley Leigh Holman of Hoisington, KS; one brother, Melvin Holman and wife Jane Heather Holman of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Jade Lee Holman and Jackdaniel Holman; former wife and friend, Dee Holman of Colorado Springs, CO; nieces and nephews, Ben and Emily Steinbauer, and Westen and Sophie McNeely.

Cremation has taken place, and in lieu of service, the family will have a “Memorial BBQ” on June 15th, where we will invite friends and family to share in the celebration of Marty’s life with his favorite foods and memories, at 3712 19th Street (Larry and Jan Westfall’s), in Great Bend at 5:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Bomber Baseball or the Great Bend Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Denise “DW” Wolf

WILSON – Denise “DW” Wolf, 62, passed away May 14, 2019, at Wilson Health and Rehab. She was born August 8, 1956 at Russell to Leven and Virginia (Plante) Wolf.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Denise was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose. She loved bowling, CB radios, country music, John Wayne movies and especially loved spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include, one brother, Dennis Wolf and wife Kandi of Great Bend; three sisters, Karla Vandivier and husband Paul of LaCrosse, Paula Shaw and husband Kirby of Bison, and Lorain Sturn of Kansas City, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and grandparents, Anthony and Amelia Wolf, and Joseph and Marcella Plante.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 16, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Rev. Samuel J. ”Sam” Ward

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Samuel J. ”Sam” Ward, age 96, passed away May 11, 2019, at Almost Home, Great Bend.  He was born January 4, 1923, at Joplin, Mo., to Grover Cleveland and Martha Jane Ward.  Sam married Anneliese Fruehauf July 17, 1949, at Hudson.  She survives.

Sam, a resident of Great Bend since 1935 coming from Joplin, Mo., was a lifelong farmer and stockman, belonging to First Christian Church, Great Bend.  His passion was farming, but also enjoyed woodworking, carving, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include wife, Anneliese Ward, of the home; one son, Robert Ward of Anthony; two daughters, Mildred Dills and Karen Spears both of Great Bend; three grandchildren Donnie Beeler, Duane Spears and Tracey Spears; and many great grandchildren.  Sam was preceded in passing by two brothers, Bob and Grover, Jr.; four sisters, Ellie, Mary, Violet, Jewel; three additional young siblings; and two sons-in-law, Bennie Dills and Al Spears.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at First Christian Church, Great Bend, with Rev. Joshua Leu officiating.  Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.  Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Memorials may be given to First Christian Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Lillian Rose (Williams) Rosenberg

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Lillian Rose (Williams) Rosenberg, passed away May 10, 2019, at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.  She was born Sept. 22, 1923, in Phillips County, Kan., to Claude and Emma (Schippert) Williams.  On June 22, 1945, Lillian married Verlyn Rosenberg in Jewell.  He passed away Oct. 28, 2004.  They were blessed with 59 years of marriage.

Lillian was a 1940 graduate of Alma High School, later pursuing her teacher’s certificate from Kearney Normal School, then teaching first through eighth grades in a one room school in rural Nebraska. Lillian had been a Great Bend resident since 1952, coming from Phillips County, having owned and operated, with Verlyn, Rosenberg Engine Service, where Lillian faithfully served as vice president and secretary for 33 years.

Lillian was a member of First Assembly God Church, Great Bend. Lillian and Verlyn traveled the U.S. extensively, also having visited Italy and the Holy Land.

Survivors include two sons, Rex Rosenberg of Hoisington and Neil Rosenberg and wife Carolyn of Fraser, Col.; two daughters, Joyce VanCamp of Great Bend and Kay E. Cook and husband David of Tulsa, Okla.; 16 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in passing by her husband; two sons, Douglas Rosenberg and Mark Rosenberg; and one daughter, Barbara Casey.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at First Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Dwight Dozier.  Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.  Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, May 13, 2019, with the family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorials may be given to First Assembly of God, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Karen M. (Herrman) Williams

Karen M. (Herrman) Williams, 64, Liebenthal, Kansas, died Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Karen was born May 24, 1954, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Elmer F. Herrman, Sr., and Dolores G. (Burgardt) Herrman.  She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.  A 1972 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, she was an assembly line worker at Travenol, Hays, Kansas, for several years.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas.

She married Ray D. Williams, they divorced.

Survivors include:  three brothers, Kenny Herrman (Kathy), Liebenthal, Kansas, Jerry Herrman (Cindy), Liebenthal, Kansas, and Elmer Herrman, Jr. (Sandy), Timken, Kansas; and one sister, Connie Stewart (John), La Crosse, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 12, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Monday, May 13, 2019, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:20 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Monday, May 13, 2019, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas, with Father Eric Gyamfi officiating.  Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Liebenthal, Kansas.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Dennis was a vendor for 7 Up.

Survivors include, his step grandfather, James Woods; his brother, Derrick W. Hearn; an aunt, Kathy Henry; and two cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis Hearn and Charlene Bobeck.

GREAT BEND – Darrin Willard Hearn, 33, passed away April 21, 2019 at his home in Great Bend. He was born February 12, 1986 to Dennis and Charlene (Bobeck) Hearn.

Ronald Charles Maneth

MCPHERSON – Ronald Charles Maneth, 67, passed away May 7, 2019, at The Cedars in McPherson. He was born at Great Bend, on December 19, 1951, to Fred C. & Phyllis (Krampe) Maneth.

Ron grew up and lived most of his life in Great Bend, KS and his last 4 years he has resided at The Cedars in McPherson. Ron was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend. Growing up, Ron was actively involved in the Boy Scouts. Ron had an inquisitive mind and loved to figure out how things worked. He was very adept in working with electronics. Ron loved traveling, especially trips to Disney World, Disneyland, and Colorado. Ron also enjoyed being outdoors, taking long walks and visiting with people in the community. In his last 4 years, Ron became a favorite of The Cedars staff who cared for him with love and compassion.

Survivors include, two sisters, Cheryl Yunk and husband Dan of Manhattan and Carla Wynn Griffin and husband Kenneth of The Woodlands, TX; one brother, Kent Maneth and wife Debbie of Gilbert, TX; 6 nieces and nephews, Carey Rawson, Jill Riffel, Craig Yunk, Kelly Kearney, Cory Dodson and Jacob Maneth; and 10 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Richard Maneth.

Friends may come to the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, May 9, 2019, to sign the register book. Rosary will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 10, 2019, with Mass of Christian Burial following at 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to The Cedars in McPherson, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
