Raised on the family farm south of Little River, Marie was one of eight children born to Swedish immigrants.

She married Lawrence Alvin Sisk June 18, 1937 at Hutchinson, Kansas.  He died December 18, 1982.

She was a secretary for Rice County Extension Office.

Mrs. Sisk was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1952 coming from Hutchinson, Kansas.

She attended First Presbyterian Church, Great Bend. She enjoyed nature, flowers, and visiting Cheyenne Bottoms.

two sons: Ronald L. Sisk and his wife Janine of Lenexa, KS, and Larry W. Sisk and his wife Poldi of Rosemount, MN

She was proud of each and every one and their varied accomplishments. The family is grateful to Joe, Kevin, Ric, and Kole for helping Marie maintain her home, allowing her to stay there until she peacefully passed away.

Eleanor M. Adams

Larned – Eleanor M. Adams, 90, went to be with her Lord on July 14, 2014. She was born May 18, 1924 in Burdett, the daughter of Curtis D. and Blanche H. Hayward Smith. A longtime area resident, she was a cosmetologist for 30 years and also worked at the Larned State Hospital.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran church, Larned. She was a member of the Ladies American Legion Auxiliary, was past president of the Ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Professional Business Women’s Association.

On October 20, 1950, she married Delbert L. Adams in Radium. He passed away January 30, 2010.

Survivors include: two daughters, Linda Fox and Joyce Bettes, both of Larned; a son, Allan Adams, Iowa City, Iowa; a sister, Lola Shannon, Springfield, MO; ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Bernard, Dwight, Clarence, Harold W., Maurice and Clyde Smith; two sisters, Helen Halling and Alice Harris; three grandsons, Jeremy Adams, Joseph Adams and John Adams, one granddaughter, Lisa Adams and one great grandson, Eason Ray Hughes.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Rev. Mark Lovett presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the mortuary. Cremation will follow the services and Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery at a later date.

He married Audrey Estella Schwerdtfeger October 12, 1941 at Bushton, Kansas.
He had radio repair shops in Claflin and Bushton, Kan., in the late 1930’s and 1940’s. Following World War II, he worked as a service technician for Sears and Montgomery Ward. He later was employed as an electronics technician for the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring after sixteen years. Mr. Mullenix was a Las Cruces, N. M., resident who had previously lived in Kansas and New Mexico.
He was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II.

Billie Clive Kerns

Larned – Billie Clive Kerns, 82, passed away July 13, 2014 at the Leisure Homestead, St. John, KS.

He was born August 21, 1931 in Larned; the son of Harold and Fern Koehn Kerns. A lifetime area resident; he worked for the United State Postal Service, after retiring from the postal service he owned and operated the Kerns Variety Store.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Larned. He was a member of the American Legion in Garfield. He loved to go to auctions and go antiquing, and also loved playing cards with his friends.

He married Joyce Meckfessel, she passed away in 1998. On September 1, 2001 he married Mary Werth Kisslinger Kerns. She survives.

Other survives include; two sons, Cory Kerns, Windsor, CO and Ryan Kerns, Highland, KS; two daughters, Leesa Swenson, Golden, CO and Onjinee “Angie” Kerns, Kansas City, MO; three step-sons, Kirby Kisslinger, Kerry Kisslinger and Mark Kisslinger; a step-daughter, Kristi Newell; a brother, Lane Kerns and wife Billie, Houston, TX; six grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by; his son, Dallas Scott Kerns.

Funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church, Larned with Pastor Dan Lundgren presiding. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery at a later date.

Leo Joseph Schmidt

Leo Joseph Schmidt, 89, died Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Inman, KS, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Leo was born December 19, 1924 in Liebenthal, KS, to John and Anna (Heronema) Schmidt. He was the youngest of ten children. Leo married Dorothy “Dottie” Dreher on January 13, 1947, in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Schoenchen, KS. She survives.
Leo served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European-African Middle Eastern Theater as a Private First Class. He was awarded a Purple Heart after he suffered severe injuries in battle at Colmar, France. After he returned from service, he worked for the Kansas Highway of Engineers (Jan 1946 to May 1952), Reed Roller Bit Co (May 1952 to 1954), Esfeld Trucking Co (Nov 1954 to Nov 1955) before joining Smith Tool International in November 1955. He retired from Smith Tool in January of 1981 after 26 years of service. His last position was Regional Sales Manager based in Great Bend.

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Post 180. Leo took up golf at the age of 50, and could often be seen at the Petroleum Club and Lake Barton Golf Courses. For years, he took his family and their friends to Lake Wilson and Barton Lake, teaching many how to ski with the family boat. He also would take long fishing trips with his brother, Monsignor George Schmidt, at Kerwin Lake, and supplied the family with plenty of fish for the 40 days of Lent. Leo was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He will be remembered for his electric smile, contagious laugh, and wonderful sense of humor …. And his flocked white Christmas trees.

Surviving are their six children; Dianna Koerner of Hays, KS; George Schmidt (Sallie) of Fort Smith, AR; Karen Harper (Steve) of Good Year, AZ; Mike Schmidt (Debbie) of Greeley, CO; Patricia “Trish” Schartz of Great Bend, KS; and Joan Barrett (Jeff) of Wichita, KS; twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Leo is also survived by one sister, Annie Ziegler of Beloit, KS.

He was preceded in death by eight siblings; Isabella Schmidt, Leonard Schmidt, Monsignor George Schmidt, Sister Ann Mary Schmidt, Louise Dolechek, Sister Mary Bernadette Schmidt, Celestine Isenbart, and infant Celestine Schmidt.

Esther Dunham, 89, died December 2, 2013 at Golfcrest Health Care Center, Hollywood, Fla. Born July 16, 1924 at Scottsbluff, Neb., she was the daughter of Lee Selby and Alice Butler. She married Jack Dunham June 9, 1945 at Hays, Kan. A former resident of Great Bend before moving to Florida, she was employed at J. C. Penney and the Barton County Health Department until her retirement.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Dunham of Hollywood, Fla., and Janet Meyeres of Great Bend; three sons, David Dunham and Gary Dunham, both of Great Bend; and Steve Dunham; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Jack L. Dunham; her husband Jack M. Dunham; and one brother, Charles Butler.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend, with Rev. Dick Ogle presiding. Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, is in charge of arrangements.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Pilot Club, 40-year member of Bissell’s Point Home Demonstration Unit, IOOF, and was a Sunday School Teacher and Girl Scout Troop Leader, all of Great Bend.

Larry Randall Miller, 55, died May 31, 2014 in San Diego, Calif. He was born March 10, 1959 at Great Bend, Kan., the son of Harold S. and Dorothy J. Miller.  He joined the Coast Guard in 1978, working as a corpsman and was awarded a letter from President Ronald Reagan for saving a life.  He attended Wichita State University on the GI Bill and later a respiratory therapist and cardiology technician.  He married Bernadette Alison December 31, 1990 at San Diego. 

Mr. Miller enjoyed spending time with his family and attending music concerts. 

Survivors include his wife, one son, Dustin Miller, San Diego; one daughter, Luann Miller, San Diego; his mother, Dorothy Miller, Lyons, Kan.; one brother, Ron Miller, Denver, Colo.; and one sister, Sandy Mull, Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold S. Miller. 

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Bryant Funeral Home with the Reverend John Grummon officiating.  Memorials are requested to the GBHS Class of 1977 Reunion Committee or the Children’s Education Fund, in care of the funeral home.
