Robert Alfred Bauer

Larned – Robert Alfred Bauer, 94, passed away May 11, 2014 at Diversicare of Larned.

He was born January 22, 1920 at Burdett, the son of Edward Phillip and Emma Marie Miller Bauer. A lifetime Burdett and Larned resident, he was a farmer and retired employee of Dillons.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Lions Club, both of Larned.

On July 27, 1941 he married Lucile Grace Rucker at Burdett. She passed away March 8, 2007.

Survivors include: two daughters, Barbara Kropp, Denver, CO, Connie Ellis, San Carlos, CA; two sons, Edward P. Bauer, Burdett, Randy Bauer, Fairbury, NE; eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lester and a sister, Luella Lynam,

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May17, for family and friends at the Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett with Rev. Bethann Black presiding.

Rick L. Best

Larned – Rick L. Best, 60, passed away May 10, 2014 at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina.

He was born September 17, 1953 at Larned, the son of Robert and Virginia Best. A lifetime area resident, he was a MHDD at the Larned State Hospital, Larned.

He was of the Christian faith.

On June 16, 1973, he married Linda Cooper at Burdett. She survives.

Other survivors include: his parents; two daughters, Tiffany Eaves and husband Matt, Basehor and Courtney Smith and husband Bart, Topeka; a brother, Mike Best, Lawrence; a sister, Tracy Reynolds, Larned; two grandchildren, Madelyn and Cecila (CC) Eaves.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Friends may sign the register book from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary. Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Married Evelyn Emma Guion July 18, 1938 at Carlsbad, New Mexico. She died March 30, 2002.
He worked at Bayless Dry Cleaning when he was young, served in the Army Air Force during World War II in Panama, attended Wichita School of Business, and worked at Southwestern Bell, Scheuffler Supply Co. and American Parts Co. as the accounts manager until he retired.
Mr. Becker was a longtime Great Bend resident, moving to Norman, Oklahoma in 2011.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #15, Blue Lodge, and American Legion Argonne Post 180, all of Great Bend. He enjoyed playing golf and reading.
He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Becker, and one daughter-in-law, Marilyn Becker.

Janet Hipp

Obit photoJanet Hipp, age 72, died Sunday May 11, 2014 at her home in rural Claflin, Kansas. She was born March 2, 1942 at Great Bend the daughter of Jim and Cecelia Lorene (Pundsack) Keeley.

Janet, a lifelong resident of the area, graduated from Radium High School and completed nurse’s training at the Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend, Kansas. She had been a Registered Nurse for the past forty-three years. A majority of her career was spent working at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington, Kansas where she started as a floor nurse, then moved to a surgical nurse and later retired as the chief nursing officer. Janet was a past member of the Kansas Organization of Nurse Leaders and was a strong voice for nursing. She was a mentor to her staff and peer group and led by example.

Janet was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church of Odin where she served on the Altar Society and Parish Council. Janet also served on the Sunflower Diversified Services board, Clara Barton Hospital Foundation and a volunteer at RSVP of Hoisington. Janet enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends.

She married Thomas Hipp October 12, 1963 at Seward, Kansas. He preceded her in death on February 26, 2006.
Survivors include four sons, Mike Hipp and wife Patty of rural Claflin, Kansas; Brian Hipp of St. Louis, Missouri; Chris Hipp and wife Jody of Hays, Kansas; Scott Hipp and wife Carey of Ellsworth, Kansas; two sisters, Patty Vratil and husband Ron of Great Bend, Kansas; Linda McFarlane and husband Gene of Lenexa, Kansas; and eleven grandchildren, Allie, Katie, Keeley, Elizabeth, Gabrielle, Ashley, Benjamin, Olivia, Andrew, Emily, and Thomas Hipp.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin with Father Ted Stoecklein as celebrant. Burial will follow at Holy Family Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday, May 13, 2014 from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. with a Vigil Service followed by an Altar Society Rosary beginning at 7:00 P.M. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, Kansas. He was born January 4, 1951 in Fort Smith, Arkansas; the son of Dr. Marlin Boyd and Martha Nell Greenwood Hoge.

Survivors include; his father, Fort Smith, Arkansas, a daughter; Faith DeCouer, Seattle, Washington, a brother; Rollins Greenwood Hoge, Fort Smith, Arkansas and a sister; Catherine Nell Hoge, Little Rock, Arkansas.

Mrs. Conard was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1970, coming from Larned, Kansas.

She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and Golden Belt Humane Society.  Following her retirement, Mrs. Conard was involved with Pathways Rescare, Foster Grandparent for U. S. D. #428, and First Assembly of God daycare.

She worked for Larned State Hospital and Central Kansas Medical Center as a licensed mental health technician.
Living in Lyons for the last three years, Mrs. Strobel was a long time resident of Great Bend, being raised in Hoisington , and living in Seward from 1959 until 1975.
Mrs. Strobel was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose, Altar Society, and the Central Kansas Association of the Visually Impaired.

Wendell M. Doonan

Doonan, WendellName of Deceased: Wendell M. Doonan                                          Age: 91

 Wendell M. Doonan, 91, died April 27, 2014 at Eckstein Center – Hospice of the Valley, Scottsdale, Arizona. He was born February 27, 1923 at Great Bend, Kansas the son of Clarence Cecil & Florence Roberta (Bowyer) Doonan. He married Wanda Lee Wolf January 31, 1944 at Hoisington, Kansas. She died October 19, 1980. He then married Mary Jane (Stricker) Reich March 12, 1983 at Great Bend, Kansas.

 A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mr. Doonan founded Doonan Truck and Equipment in 1947, an Oliver farm equipment dealership which was housed in a small building north of Great Bend on Highway 281. In 1950 the dealership was moved to north Main Street and a service station added. Four years later the GMC Truck franchise was secured and another move was made to a new building on Main Street. In 1961 the dealership moved to 10th Street and the 281 By-pass as a result of the new building burning.  The Peterbilt truck line was added in 1964.  A new facility at the Highway 56 and 156 junction was opened in 1970 due to increased business where the present-day dealership is located.  The Doonan Trailer facility was added in 1974 where Doonan’s own design of grain trailers, oilfield beds, pressure tanks, and flatbed and drop-deck trailers were manufactured. Mr. Doonan eventually had satellite dealerships in Wichita, Liberal, Garden City, and Grand Island, Neb.  Those, with the exception of Great Bend and Wichita have all been sold and the two remaining dealerships are owned and operated by his son, Kenny Doonan.

 Mr. Doonan was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lions Club, A. F. & A. M. Masonic Lodge #15, and Isis Shrine, all of Great Bend; and Ascension Lutheran Church and ROMEOs at Ascension Lutheran Church , Paradise Valley, Ariz.

 Mr. Doonan is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Doonan, of the home; three sons: Maurice Doonan of Kingman, Kan., Kenny Doonan and his wife Sue of Wichita, Kan., and Warren Doonan and his wife Jeanne of Hoisington, Kan.; one sister: Evelyn Graham of Washington; one sister-in-law, Lila Doonan; nine grandchildren: Kelly Husher and her husband Steve, Dan Doonan and wife Debbie, Brian Doonan and his wife Shannon, Brent Doonan, Jennifer Pece and her husband Steve, Aaron Doonan and his wife Gina, Jarrod Doonan and his wife Lyndsay, Chelsea Coon and her husband Chris, and Darren Doonan and his wife Sabrina; twelve great-grandchildren: Madison Husher, Jacob Husher, Cassidy Husher, Quin Doonan, Brock Doonan, Preston Doonan, Ava Doonan, Jaxson Doonan, Liam Doonan, Jacey Doonan, Taetym Doonan, and Jovie Coon; one step-son: Tim Reich; one step-daughter: Jody Wise and her husband John; and three step-grandchildren: Lindsay Reich, Chandler Reich, and Alex Wise. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Dorothy Roberta Doonan; one step-son, Brian Reich; two brothers, Robert Doonan and Willard Doonan; and one sister, Margarite McAnulla.

 Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 2, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend with The Reverend Judy Stricker officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, Kansas. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., family will receiving  friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Bryant Funeral Home.
