Schyler Max Alexander

Garfield – Schyler Max Alexander, 84 passed away April 25, 2014 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

He was born October 29, 1929 in Ft. Supply, Oklahoma; the son of James Simmion and Bessie Mae Covalt Alexander. A longtime resident he was a farmer/rancher.

He was of the Christian faith.

On September 14, 1949 he married Faye Delores Whitcomb in Canadian, Texas. She survives.

Other survivors include; a daughter, Lisa Gaye Alexander, Larned; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by; two sons, Arnold Vance Alexander and Kenneth Wayne Alexander and a brother Vernon Ray Alexander.

Graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Garfield Cemetery, with Robert Sallee presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Garfield Cemetery, Garfield, Kansas.

George F. Reha

George F. Reha, La Crosse, Kansas, 90, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at the Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, La Crosse, Kansas.

Mr. Reha was born October 4, 1923, in rural McCracken, Kansas, the son of Frank and Lillian (Richter) Reha. A lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas, he was the owner of Reha Automotive, La Crosse, Kansas, before his retirement. He was a 1941 graduate of Bison High School, Bison, Kansas.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas; La Crosse Country Club, La Crosse, Kansas; and a 60 year member of American Legion Post 33, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II.

On January 4, 1947, he married Janita Krug in Great Bend, Kansas.

Survivors include: two daughters, Jana Hemken, and her husband, Wes, Rush Center, Kansas, and Judith Richardson, and her husband, Darrell “Rich”, Bellevue, Washington; four grandchildren, Brent Hemken, Larned, Kansas, Shana Brewington, Rush Center, Kansas, Jennifer Richardson, Bellevue, Washington, and John Richardson, Seattle, Washington; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a grandson, Phillip Hemken; and one brother Daniel Reha.

Mr. Cates was a Claflin, Kansas resident.

He was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam Conflict. 

He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, Great Bend; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Claflin.  He was an active public servant, serving on many community committees.  He was owner and operator of the 94 Store, Claflin, Barton County Commissioner, retired commercial airline pilot, and was a pilot for Pratt Farmers Spraying Service.

Eleanor H.J. Tammen

Tammen, EleanorLarned – Eleanor H.J. Tammen, 92, passed away April 21, 2014 at the Cedars Care Home, McPherson.

She was born May 10, 1921 in Albert. The daughter of Fred H. and Mattie G. Folkerts Hemken; after living in Colorado Springs from 1957 to 1961, she moved to Larned and was a resident from 1961 to 2005. She then moved to McPherson, she was a Homemaker.

She was a former member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Larned and a present member of the Grace Lutheran Church in McPherson, and Mary-Martha’s Circle of Larned. She enjoyed baking, reading, and loved gardening. She was especially known for her Fried Chicken, homemade bread and delicious graham cracker pie.

On August 27, 1941 she married Leonard F. Tammen at Albert, KS. He passed away March 12, 2009.

Survivors include: a son Glenn Tammen and wife Ronda, McPherson, a daughter Loretta Stephenson, Rozel; a brother, Leonard Hemken and wife Nancy, Ovideo, Florida; a sister, Louise Haller, Topeka; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; a son-in-law, Ramon Stephenson and a brother-in-law, W.E. (Eddie) Haller.

Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Grace Lutheran Church, Larned with Rev. Dale Dumperth presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with family present from 6pm to 8pm Thursday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Married Willie Leonard Gibson December 29, 1948 at Wichita, Kansas. He died August 10, 1997.
Mrs. Gibson was an Edmond, Oklahoma resident since 1991 coming from Lamar, CO and Tribune, KS.
She was an active seamstress, making smocks for hospital employees, and for underprivileged children for “U R Special”. She was also known for making all of her children’s clothing as they grew up. She belonged to the “Time Out Club”, enjoyed Bingo, puzzles, and playing cards. She also attended the Heritage Baptist Church, Edmond, OK, and belonged to the “Women at the Well”. She loved her family and took pride in being a grandmother and great-grandmother.

Eldon A. Hays

Larned – Eldon A. Hays, 86, passed away April 1, 2014 at Diversicare of Larned, Larned, Kansas.

He was born July 21, 1927 at Pittsburg, Kansas, the son of William Anderson and Hannah Laura Daykin Hays. A resident of Larned, moving from Arizona in 2006, he was a Grocery Store Manager. He was an avid hunter and loved any type of outdoor sports.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Larned.

On May 24, 1985, he married Linda Oles at Ness City. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Dallas David Hays, Larned, Thoman Anderson Hays, Pheonix, Arizona; two daughters, Marilyn Montainge, Sedona, Arizona, Laura Clarkson, San Francisco, California; a sister, Lavon Dalby, Williamsburg, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Faye Gatton, Great Bend; four grandsons; two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Duane and David Lee Hays.

Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at the Beckwith Mortuary chapel, Larned with Bob Sallee presiding. Private family Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery. He was a United States Navy veteran from 1969 to 1975. 

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, NRA and was a FFL Gun Dealer.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gun collecting and was an avid NASCAR fan.
