Debra Gayle Harbert

Larned – Debra Gayle Harbert, 51, died March 14, 2014 at her home in Larned.

She was born January 17, 1963, in Larned, the daughter of James Edward Sr. and Virginia Lee Woelk Smith. A longtime area resident, she was the co owner and manager of Guy’s Liquor Store. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed reading and watching movies.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Larned.

On June 20, 1992, she married Guy Harbert in Larned. He survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Cody Harbert, Larned; a daughter, Deserae Caldwell, Larned; three brothers, Gregory Smith, James (Bub) Smith Jr. and Steven Smith, all of Larned; a sister, Sheri Kendall, Lenexa; two grandchildren, A.J. and Dakotah Wise, both of Larned.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Julie Smith.

Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Rev. Mark Lovett presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Margaret Cooper Blackwood

Pawnee Rock – Margaret Cooper Blackwood, 81, of Benton, AR, died Tuesday, March 11, 2014. She was born June 22, 1932, in Larned, KS, to the late Durward F. and Gladys Holopirek Cooper. Her family moved to Jonesborow, AR, when she was 14. She attended Mississippi College for Women (the “W”) for one year before transferring and graduating from Arkansas State College where she was a member and president of Alpha Gamma Delta. She married the late Thomas W. Blackwood on August 30, 1953, and moved to Benton, AR in 1964. She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Benton, and a longtime member of P.E.O.
Margaret is survived by her children, Cheryl Bryant (Royce), and Thomas W. Blackwood, Jr. (Cathy), 4 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She will be remembered as a loving wife, amazing mother, and trusted friend who lived her Christian faith. She had a passion and true talent for painting in oils, watercolors and pastels. Margaret made our lives better through her kindness. This legacy of love is what she leaves to all of us.
The funeral service will be held March 17, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, KS with Robert Sallee presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Mortuary. Burial will be in the Pawnee Rock Cemetery, Pawnee Rock, KS. Married Gale E. Yahne September 8, 1945 at Great Bend, Kansas.  He died February 9, 1981. She then married Fred “Ted” Lawrence July 30, 1983 at Great Bend, Kansas. He died June 11, 1989.

She was a secretary for Roy J. McMullen, Attorney at Law, Dorsey Brown, County Superintendent of Schools, and was a secretary at Great Bend High School for twenty years.

Mrs. Lawrence was a lifetime Barton County, Kansas resident.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Mini Study Group and Golden Girls, all of Great Bend.  She was a long-time 4-H member and leader.

Eugene M. Fisher

Fisher, Eugene PhotoLewis – Eugene M. Fisher, 92, passed away March 11, 2014 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita.

He was born August 17, 1921 near Fellsburg. The son of C.W. and Ora Belle Parker Fisher. A longtime area resident, he was a farmer.

He was a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic church in Belpre and also served on the Lewis COOP board.

On August 20, 1940 he married Josephine E. Scheufler at Belpre. She passed away August 22, 1995.

Survivors include: three daughters, Jeanette (LaVerne) Myers, Eunice (John) Stubbs both of Abilene, Becky (Mark) Ketterl, Lewis; eight grandchildren, Alan Myers, David Myers, Brian Myers, Eric Stubbs, Mary Stubbs, Clayton Stubbs, Melinda Kurth, Mitchell Ketterl and twenty great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Keith; five sisters, Ola Weese, Elva Breitenbach, Vera Higbie, Freida Hagewood and Eula Fisher and a grandson, Michael Ketterl.

Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belpre with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Vigil Service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the Mortuary. Burial will be in the Belpre Catholic Cemetery.

Robert C. Karst

Robert C. Karst, age 96, died Monday, March 10, 2014 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born November 6, 1917 at Galatia, Kansas the son of Jacob and Eva (Rein) Karst.

Robert, a lifelong area resident, graduated from country school in rural Galatia. He was a farmer and also drove the road grader for the Wheatland Township for many years. On November 20, 1938 he married Frieda Mai at Milberger. He was a member of United Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger, Kansas and enjoyed farming, bowling, carpentry work, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of seventy-five years, Frieda Karst of Hoisington; two daughters, Bonita Ney and husband Merlin of Russell, Kansas; Brenda Riedl and husband Frank of Great Bend; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Herman Karst, Hubert Karst, Constantine Karst, and twin brother Ralph Karst; three sisters, Elizabeth Ochs, Caroline Nuss, and Amelia Dietz.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014 at United Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger with Nancy Mitchell – Interim officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery at Galatia, Kansas. Friends may call Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. A homemaker, Mrs. Jilg was a lifetime Olmitz, KS resident.
Preceded in death was her first husband Clarence Schreiber and together they had two daughters who survive her;  Mary Ann Shaft of Wichita and Carol Barreiro and her husband Andres of Fayetteville, NY.  Also surviving are four granddaughters, one great grandson, nieces, nephews, and cousins.  In later years she married Aaron Jilg who also preceded her in passing.
She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and the Altar Society, both of Olmitz.

He was born September 8, 1928, in Antonino, the son of Anton and Pauline Rupp Sauer. A resident of Rozel, he was a retired farmer and an avid hunter and fishman.

He was a member of the Rozel United Methodist Church, Kinsley Gun Club, La Crosse Gun Club and the Larned Gun Club.

On November 24, 1949 he married Martha L. Arnold at Rozel. She passed away September 10, 2012.

Survivors include: a son, Dennis Sauer, Rozel; two daughters, Joleen Tomlinson, Austell, Georgia and Karin Rexroad, Salina; a brother, Fritz Sauer, Garden City; Five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, I.A. Sauer and three sisters, Irene Leiker, Katie Dodson and Albertine Stewart.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Rozel Cemetery, with Pastor Brad McCoy presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.

She was a member of Good Sam’s Camping Club, Black Heritage Club, First Baptist Church, former Great Bend First Baptist Church Mission Ministry, Sunday School Superintendent, and choir member.
