Norma Pauline Kasselman

Kasselman, NormaNorma Pauline Kasselman, 96, Pawnee Rock, Kansas passed away Wednesday, March 5th, 2014 at the Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood, Kansas. Norma was born July 17, 1917 in Columbus, Kansas to Emma (LeCleff) and James Argyle.

A lifetime resident of Pawnee Rock, she was a member of the Pawnee Rock United Methodist Church and an active member of the United Methodist Women’s Society and the Ark Valley Grange.

On June 5th, 1937, she married Emmett “Johnny” Kasselman in Ellinwood, Kansas. He preceded her in death on October 17, 2001.

Survivors include three sons: Keith (Alta) of Pawnee Rock, Willard “Woody” (Luellen) of Olsburg, Kansas, Elmer (Vera) of Larned, Kansas and one daughter Edna (Ed) Dutton of Yuma, Arizona, 29 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Alma and Elaine and brothers, Jimmy, Clyde, and Glen.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lorene C. Horton

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas

Lorene C. Horton, age 86, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell, Kansas. She was born November 15, 1927 at Topeka, Kansas the daughter of Cornelius and Elsie M. (Ihde) Jacobson.

Lorene was a long time Hoisington resident. She graduated from Hope High School in 1945 and attended Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She later attended Barton County Community College where she earned her certified nurse’s aide certificate. She worked as a certified nurse’s aide for Central Kansas Medical Center until her retirement. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend. Lorene enjoyed sewing, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.

On August 30, 1950 she married Frank S. Horton at Hope, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 10, 2007.

Survivors include one daughter, Lillian Feldt and husband Joe of Hoisington; three sons, David Horton and wife Sushia of Great Bend, Donald Horton and wife Patricia of Hoisington, and Frank Horton and wife Lola of Salina, Kansas; nine grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. Lorene also had a sister, Virginia Laudin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Don Jacobson.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014 at Hoisington Cemetery with Reverend Doyle Smith officiating. Friends may call Thursday, March 6, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Mr. Taylor was a lifetime Great Bend, Kansas resident.

He was a United States Army Reserve veteran. 

He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ.  He raised and enjoyed showing championship Hereford cattle.

Merle Steiner

Merle Steiner, age 81, of Hoisington died Monday, March 3, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Wakefield, Kansas. He was born November 14, 1932 at Odin, Kansas the son of Louis and Lenora (Ummel) Steiner.

Merle graduated from Odin High School and was a long time Hoisington resident. He was employed by the City of Hoisington for many years in the public works department and was a full time farmer. Merle was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus both in Hoisington, and enjoyed gardening, tinkering with things, dancing, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends.

Merle married Pat Lewis in 1967 at Barton County, Kansas. She preceded him in death on May 30, 1992. He later married Loyola Meitner in 1997 at Hoisington.

Survivors include his wife, Loyola Steiner of Great Bend, Kansas; one daughter, Kim Gorton and significant other Ron Cash of Junction City, Kansas; two step-daughters, Shirley Schugart and husband John of California, and Linda Ruble and husband Larry of Hoisington; three step-sons, Jim Meitner and wife Celeste of Hoisington, Rocky Meitner and wife Connie of Hoisington, and Terry Shearrer and wife Linda of Louisburg, Kansas; one sister, Mildred Siebert of St. John, Kansas; three nieces, Alicia Steiner, Tracey Swalley, and Debbie Freund; two nephews, Alan Siebert, and Scott Siebert; twelve grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Dean Steiner, and a step-daughter, Debbie Plank.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington with Father Anselm Eke as celebrant. Burial will follow at Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday, March 6, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a vigil service followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Barbara J. Erway

Barbara ErwayLarned- Barbara J. Erway, 70, passed away March 2, 2014 at the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

She was born April 5, 1943 in Sumiton, AL the daughter of Houston and Lilly Fortenberry Greathouse. Moving from Alabama in 1956 she was a longtime area resident of Larned and a Registered Nurse at the Larned State Hospital. She very much loved spoiling her grandchildren and going on camping trips and Traveling.

On June 13th, 1962 she married Leonard L. Erway in Larned, KS. He survives

Survivors Include: two daughters, Melissa Jacobs and husband Randy, Great Bend, KS, Kimberly Sumner and Husband Kelly, Attica, Indiana; one brother, Kerry Greathouse, Larned; two sisters, Joyce Sucht, Wichita and Ann Wilcox, Larned and four grandchildren, Kegan, Konner, Zackery and Gabriale.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles Greathouse, Caris Greathouse, Ralph Greathouse and Jerry Greathouse.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned with Pastor Leroy Lyon Presiding. Visitation will be 9 am to 8 pm Tuesday and Wednesday with family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wedensday at the Mortuary. Inurnment in the Larned Cemetery will be at a later day.

She was co-owner and operator of Kansas Door and also worked in several flower shops, was an administrative secretary at Fuller Brush and was an Avon representative for twenty years.

Mrs. Schumacher was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1957 coming from Bazine, Kansas.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, AMBUCS, and several bridge clubs.  She also enjoyed fishing, water sports and traveling, especially, wintering in Texas.  Her true love was spending time with her grandchildren.

Larned – Grace Lucille Baugher, 101, died February 16, 2014, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born May 19, 1912 in Burdett, the daughter of John Ora and Ida Bauer Line. A lifetime area resident, she was a cook for USD 495 and she loaded 20mm shells during the war. She also loved to dance and play cards

On November 23, 1931, she married Dillwyn Shay Baugher in Dodge City. He passed away September 13, 1981.

Survivors include: a son, Dillwyn (John), Independence, MO; a daughter, Cynthia Kay Mull, Larned; four grandchildren, Tamzen Bright, Ty Mull, Shannon Wells, Jacob Baugher and six great grandchildren, Kenda and Kale Bright, Chloe Wells, Olivia Mull, Sophia and Anthony Baugher.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Sutton, Mildred Line and Elinor Lewis.

Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett, Kansas with Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett.
