Mary Louella Wratil

Larned – Mary Louella Wratil, 103, passed away February 5, 2014 at Diversicare of Larned. She was born October 17, 1910 in Pawnee County, Kansas, the daughter of Benjamin and Lena Unruh. A lifetime area resident, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Christian Science Church and the Ladies Country Club, both of Larned.

On October 30, 1931, she married Theodore Wratil in Pawnee County. He passed away October 30, 1970.

Survivors include: a daughter, Lillis Stambaugh, Larned; two grandchildren, Kay West and Rod Stambaugh and two great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Larned Cemetery, Larned, with Robert Sallee presiding. Visitation will be from 9a.m. to 8p.m. Friday and 9a.m. to 2p.m. Saturday, at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Rosalee Roth

Roth-RosaleeLarned – Rosalee Roth, 81 passed away February 3, 2014 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, Kansas.

She was born September 16, 1932 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the daughter of James Earl Osborne and Myrtle Pansy (Karr) Osborne.

Rosalee grew up in Wichita and graduated from Wichita East High School in 1950. She attended Kansas University and graduated with a BA in English in 1954. She married Robert Eugene Roth on September 11, 1954 in Wichita. They lived in Oklahoma City from 1955 – 1957 while Robert served in the US Air Force. They then moved to Larned and lived there for 51 years where they raised their family. Rosalee enjoyed her volunteer days of teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and as a Girl Scout Leader. Later she was a survivor chairperson for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Pawnee County and a volunteer for Program Set Free Prison Ministry. She and Robert moved to Lawrence in 2008. She attended Lawrence Free Methodist Church and volunteered for Family Promise of Lawrence.

Survivors include a son, Richard Roth and wife Richelle, Larned; a daughter Libby Best and husband Mike, Lawrence; a sister, Virginia McAdoo, San Clemente, California; nephew, Larry McAdoo, California, niece, Debbie Lohrman, California; five grandchildren, Mark Best and wife April, Lawrence, Sarah Kohls and husband Mark, Topeka, Realle Roth, Littleton, Colorado, Ry Roth and wife Katherine, Larned, Raven Roth, Larned; two great grandchildren, Grayson Kohls and Hanna Kohls, Topeka.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 2009; a granddaughter Reanna Roth; a brother in law, Norman McAdoo.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Roy Savage presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday and family will be present from 9a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

Albert George ( A.G.) Crane

A.G. CraneLarned – Albert George ( A.G.) Crane, 82 passed away February 2, 2014 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned, KS.

He was born October 8, 1931 in Larned, the son of Edgar H. and Agnes Stockwell Crane. A lifetime area resident of Larned, he was a Farmer.

He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Great Bend.

On May 27, 1949 he married Gloria Umberger in Syracuse, KS. She survives.

Other survivors include: Two sons, Alan Crane and wife Rosalind, Larned, E. David Crane and wife Janet, Lawrence; Daughter-in-law, Kathie Crane, Larned; six grandchildren, Zachary (LaTasha) Crane, Rachel Crane and husband (Edward Howard), Shawn (Karen) Crane, Jessica (Josh)Conner, Clay (Becky) Crane, Natalie (Dane) Murray and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Chris Crane and a brother, David Crane.

Funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with Pastor Doyle Smith presiding. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Point View Cemetery, Radium following the service.

Mary Ann Fox-Tammen

Larned – Mary Ann Fox-Tammen, 77 passed away January 28, 2014 at the KU Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

She was born February 10, 1936 in Great Bend; the daughter of Pete F. and Hilda R. Boor Penka. A lifetime area resident, she was a school nurse for USD #495 and #496, a surgical nurse and a farmer.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, The Red Hat Society, Gem gals, Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary, the 99’s Pilot Club, Mahjong Club and the Card Club all of Larned and the Seven Continents Club.

On December 23, 1961 she married Nealan Keith Fox. He passed away April 23, 1992. On February 10, 2001 she married Charles Lee Tammen in Larned, he passed away June 22, 2003.

Survivors include: a daughter, Cindy Grant and husband Leonard, Larned; three grandchildren, Kelly Lynch and husband Sean, Eldora, Iowa, Kylee Grant, Manhattan, Kyle Grant, Hays; a great granddaughter, Kassidy Ann Marie Lynch, Eldora, Iowa; five brothers, Vernon Penka, Kansas City, Kansas, Larry Penka, Derby, Roy Penka, Belpre, Allen Penka, Dodge City and Gerald Penka, Norwood, Massachusetts and four sisters; Kathy Bowman, Larned, Patricia Klamm, Kansas City, Kansas, Joyce Sims, Colorado Springs, Colorado and Connie Mauney, Pawnee Rock.

She was preceded in death by: a sister; Betty White.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Larned with Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Married Darlene M. Lofland November 24, 1957 at Great Bend, Kansas.

He graduated from Radium High School, attended Kansas State University, and completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Fort Hays State University.  He was an avid pilot. His joy was flying his “Mooney” airplane, and enjoyed hunting, trapshooting, and was a great marksman. He helped build a new gun range for the Liberal Gun Club. Working with the General Adjustment Bureau, Mr. Unruh was an insurance adjuster and manager for 21 years. He then started his own State Farm Agency, which he operated for 22 years in Liberal. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Liberal, and served as deacon and trustee.  He retired in 1997 to travel with his wife, visit grandchildren, and help manage the family farm. He loved serving at the Liberal Air Museum. He taught trap shooting at the Seward County Community College.

Mr. Whelan was a lifetime Great Bend, Kansas resident.

He was a United States Air Force veteran, serving during World War II. 

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kansas Bankers Association, Elks Lodge #1127, American Legion Argonne Post 180, and an active member of Great Bend Chamber of Commerce.
