Melvin hauled crude oil for Koch Oil and later drove truck for Jack B. Kelley, retiring in 1995.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Melvin was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, and the Knights of Columbus Council #862, both of Great Bend. He enjoyed his grandchildren’s sporting events, word search puzzles, polka music, dominos, and a good game of pitch.

Joe Dudley Hicks

Larned – Joe Dudley Hicks, 64 died December 9, 2013 at his home, Larned.

He was born September 19, 1949 in Great Bend; the son of Burl Dudley and Eunice Lucille Shuss Hicks. A lifetime area resident he was a Registered Nurse at the Larned State Hospital for 30 years retiring in 2001.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Fort Larned Arms Association, and American Legion, all of Larned, National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited. He served in the National Guard at the rank of E5 Sgt from 1967 – 1973. He was a gunsmith for over 40 years, an avid gun collector, loved to hunt, work on guns and listen to music. Above all else he loved to spend time with friends and family. He was always entertaining his family and friends with the best stories and was always around to listen, smile and laugh.

On October 21, 1972 he married Anna Lucille Svaty at Ellworth, KS. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Shawn David Hicks, Larned; a daughter, Wendy Jo Leiker and husband Paul, Larned; two sisters, Nancy Miller, Larned and Cindy Gilbert and husband Mark, Newton, Iowa; two granddaughters, Alexandria and Makayla Leiker, Larned; and a host of other family and friends .

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Dudley and Lucille Hicks; his mother and father-in-law, Garfield and Lucille Svaty, and his step-mother, Nellie Hicks

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Seth Svaty presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Cremation has taken place.

Stella Louise Parker

Larned- Stella Louise Parker, 73, passed away December 7, 2013 at Wesley Towers Retirement Community in Hutchinson, KS

She was born January 2, 1940 in Altamont, KS the daughter of Paul and Nellie Thompson Wood. A long time area resident, she was a Food Service Supervisor for the Larned State Hospital.

She was of the Christian Faith and a member of the Kansas Consumer Advisory Council for Adult Mental Health, a Past President of the Kansas State Firefighters Association Auxiliary, a Leader for the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Cub Scouts of America, as well as a District Chairman for the Boy Scouts. She loved going camping, fishing and watching her grandkid’s play sports.

On June 7, 1959 she married Leland Ray Parker in Hutchinson, KS. He passed away March 14, 2005.

Survivors Include: three sons, Kenneth R. Parker, Kanopolis, Carl Eugene Parker and wife Julie, Larned, and Gary J. Parker, Colby; a daughter, Marilyn Chism, Garfield; a sister Delores Nicklaus and husband Richard, Hutchinson; two sisters-in-law, Berla Wood, Hutchinson, and Talma Miller, Great Bend, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Husband Ray, one brother, Otis G. Wood, a sister, Goldie Mae Hanson, two grandsons, James Keith Easter and Timothy Alan Parker and a great granddaughter, Jasmine Marie Chism.

Funeral Service will be held at 2p.m., Friday, at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Jack Singer presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with family present from 5 p.m. to 7p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at The Larned Cemetery.

Norma J. Haynes

Larned – Norma J. Haynes, 82 passed away December 6, 2013, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

She was born May 1, 1931, in Cloud County, Kansas. The daughter of Earl and Alberta Allen Snavely, she was the Vice President of Haynes Electric, Inc.

She belonged to the Larned Presbyterian Church, Larned County Club and Li Ra Mu, Salina.

On September 5, 1948, she married Stanley R. Haynes, at St. Paul, Minnesota. He survives.

Other survivors include: four sons, Kenneth S. and wife Patricia, Philadelphia, PA, Bradley R. and wife Jeanine, Salina, Keith R., Larned, Jim S. and wife Suzan, Larned; a daughter, Cynthia A. Claussen and husband Ron, Sterling; four sisters, Shirley Hamilton, Concordia, Joyce Deneault, Salem, OR, Linda Nettles, Ferris, TX, Edna Snavely, Umatilla, FL; twelve grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: two brothers, Leonard Snavely and Dean Snavely.

Lawrence L. Bauer

Burdett – Lawrence L. Bauer, 88, died December 6, 2013 at the Country Place Senior Living, Larned.

He was born December 28, 1924 in Burdett, the son of Philip and Frances Mooney Bauer. A lifetime area resident; he was a farmer/stockman.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned.

On April 26, 1952 he married Eleanor Hammeke in Ellinwood. She survives.

Other survivors include: four sons, Tom and wife Karen, Arkansas City, Brad and wife Shelley, Burdett and Alan and wife Mary, Rogers, Arkansas Dana Bauer, Burdett; a daughter, Annette Reece and husband Kent, Burdett; thirteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Emmett and Maynard.

Funeral Mass will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Vigil Service will be 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from noon to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 9:00 a.m. to noon on Monday all at the Mortuary. Burial will be in the Browns Grove Cemetery, Burdett, KS.

Larned – Janet Y. Murphy, 66 died December 5, 2013 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

She was born November 24, 1947 in Compton, California; the daughter of Hubert and Lu Disney Hanes. A longtime area resident; she was a Program Technician at the FSA office in Larned.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Red Hat Society, all of Larned.

On September 9, 1967 she married Robert R. Smyth at Winfield; he passed away Dec. 5, 1992. On November 27, 1993 she married Melvin M. Murphy Jr. at Larned, he survives.

Other survivors include; her father Hubert Hanes, three sons; Russell Smyth and wife Gina, Shawn Smyth and wife Dawn, all of Larned, Kris Smyth and wife Sunni, Scott City, three daughters; Marie Schmidtberger and husband Wayne, Victoria, Cathy DeMond and husband Lance, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Melissa Hoogendoorn and husband Darin, Lantana, Texas; two brothers, Mike Hanes, Winfield, Richard Hanes, Eudora; a sister, Susan Craig, Anderson, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; her mother, Lu Disney Hanes and a brother Sam Hanes.

Funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Larned with Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Married Patsy Anne Howell January 26, 1962 at Timmonsville, S. C.  She died April 29, 2013.

He worked in agriculture throughout his entire life, working on a poultry livestock farm, a dairy, hog farms, and at Tar Hill Turkey Hatchery. He also taught Agriculture Mechanics at the Timmonsville Vocational Center and South Florence High School. He enjoyed yard work, planting flowers and trees, hunting, fishing, and watching and playing sports.

He married Dennie Lou Short November 17, 1962 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend, Kansas. 

He moved to Kansas in 1962, residing in Lyons.  Lewis and Dennie moved to Hutchinson, where he worked for International Harvester in Hutchinson.  In late 1963 they moved to Great Bend to and Lewis was employed by Steinert Oil Company and Southard Home Improvement. He started his own business, DeWitt Sharpening Service and did small engine repair for more than twenty years.  He also enjoyed home improvement work and making bread, wearing out two bread machines.

 

He was an avid Barton Community College basketball fan, enjoying games since their inception in 1969.
