Okie married Mildred Rychlock on November 2, 1940. She died April 22, 1988.

He then married Gladys Eitel VanPelt May 26, 1990 at Scott City, KS.  She survives.

He was the owner & operator of Fairlane Trucking Company, and previously bowled professionally, played semi professional baseball and softball, and was an avid golfer.

He was a member of the Shrine Club and was a Mason for nearly 60 years.

Mr. Young had been a Great Bend, KS resident, since 2011, coming from Valley Vista, AZ, Lake Havasu, AZ, and Clawson, MI.

MARIE JOHNSON

            Marie Johnson, age 91 years, former longtime Great Bend, Kansas resident and widow of Elmer C. Johnson, passed away on Friday morning, October 18, 2013 at Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.  Marie was born on September 23, 1922 at Hugoton, Kansas to George W. and Estella (Tolbert) Smith.  She was united in marriage to Elmer C. Johnson on August 22, 1938 at Garden City, Kansas.  The couple made their home in Great Bend for many years until Elmer’s death on February 28, 1998.  Marie then lived at Larned, Kansas for six years, was a resident of the Peabody Nursing Home in Peabody, Kansas for five years, and had lived the past three years at Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wichita, Kansas.  Marie was a devoted wife and mother who raised and nurtured five children.  She enjoyed gardening and cooking, and won many baking contests for her apple pies.  While living in Great Bend Marie was a member of the First Baptist Church there.

            Survivors include one son, Charles L. (and his wife, Anettia) Johnson of Centennial,Colorado; a special niece, Donna Hopkins of Wichita, Kansas, and a host of grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews and friends who will miss her greatly.  Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sons (Lyle, Herbert, and Leland Johnson)  and one daughter (Deanna Hunt), one grandson (Charles Brown), two brothers (Calvin and Herbert Smith), and two sisters (Maybelle and Irene Smith).

 Beverly S. “Sue” Krueger, 74, went to be with the Lord October 18, 2013 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born March 28, 1939 in Crescent, Oklahoma, the daughter of Virgil and Ona Mae (Wilson) McMillan.

 Sue was a resident of Great Bend, Kansas since 1944, and a 1957 graduate of Great Bend High School. She married Jerry A. Krueger on September 28, 1964, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died April 19, 2009. Sue was an office manager in the oil and gas industry for most of her career, and worked for Midway Operating, Electra-Log, and Edmiston Oil until her retirement in 2009. She was active in the Desk and Derrick organization and had previously served as secretary.

She was a member of the Church of God and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 180. She loved gardening, traveling, her pets, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her sisters, Trisha Birkes and husband Gary of Wichita, Maxine Reece of Yale, Oklahoma, son Chris Krueger and wife Brenda of Great Bend. Three grandchildren; Becky Krueger of Denver, Colorado, Allen Krueger, wife Audra and their children Dawson and Lexie of Wichita, Kansas, and Scott Krueger, wife Shalane and their daughter Kylie of Hutchinson, Kansas.

 Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Bryant Funeral Home with The Reverend Dick Ogle officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, Kansas. Gordonna (Gordy) Cole, 68, died Oct. 11, 2013 at Loma Linda Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA. She was born Jan. 11, 1945, in Rock Springs, Wyoming. She was the daughter of Gordon and Lois (Miller) Amundson.

She was a graduate from Riverton High School in Riverton, WY. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY. She married John Cole Sept, 19, 1975 in Denver, CO. She worked at various jobs as a teacher, waitress, and primarily as a farm wife.

She was a member of the First United Methodist church in St. John, KS.

Survivors include a daughter, Jamie Cole and her husband, Paul Duncan, of Yucaipa, CA and two grandchildren, Elmyra and Oakley Duncan and a brother Larry Amundson of Riverton, WY. She was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son, Daniel Cole, and her husband.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30am on Sat, Oct 26, at the First United Methodist Church in St. John with the Rev. Irving Simon. There will be a celebration of life at Mom’s Café in Seward, KS at 5pm that evening. Memorials are suggested to the Golden Belt Humane Society or the First United Methodist Church in St. John.

He was a life member of the NRA.  He was an avid gun collector and was a volunteer chaplain at Great Bend Regional Hospital.

JAMES  L.  “JIM”  WEATHERS

 

            James L. “Jim” Weathers, age 83 years of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away at his home on Wednesday morning, October 16, 2013.  Jim was born on February 22, 1930 in rural Barton County, Kansas to Roscoe and Mabel Mae (Denbo) Weathers.  He was reared on the family farm and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, where he was stationed in Guam.  Jim was united in marriage to M. Elaine Bauer on June 10, 1956 at Larned, Kansas.  Jim farmed southwest of Great Bend nearly all of his life, until very recently when ill health prevented him from working.  Jim was a longtime member of Morrison-McFadden Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 3111 and the First Congregational United Church of Christ, both of Great Bend.

            Survivors include his wife, M. Elaine Weathers of Great Bend, Kansas; two sons:  Brenton J. “Jay” Weathers and James M. “Jimmy” Weathers, both of Great Bend, Kansas; one daughter, Karen M. (and her husband, John) Cedeno of Great Bend, Kansas; five grandchildren:  Joey Meyers, Heather and Crystal Weathers, James Wyman, and Killian Cedeno.  Jim was preceded in death by his parents, one son (Dennis Wyman), and one brother (Marion Weathers).

        Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Julie Shields and Rev. Dr. Scott V. He was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II. 

He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, American Legion Argonne Post 180, Eagles Aerie #646, and Brick Layers Union Local #15 for seventy-three years.
