*Carol Joan Lundquist passed away October 5, 2013, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend, KS, in much of the same manner in which she was born. She died with strength, grace, and dignity. Carol was born March 27, 1927 at her aunt’s home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Carl John & Rose Caroline (Blum) Pohlman, with a remote chance of survival. Born two months prematurely, Carol was placed in an improvised shoe box incubator by her aunt and father, after the doctor felt there was no hope of survival.

Philip C. “Flip” Hoss

Name of Deceased: Philip C. “Flip” Hoss                                         Age: 86

Date of Death: October 5, 2013

 

Philip C. “Flip” Hoss, 86, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, in Lenexa, Ks. He was born Aug. 8, 1927, in Seward, Ks., the sixth of nine children of Charles and Otillia (Fahrenbach) Hoss.

After graduating from Radium High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Cavalry, serving as an antitank cannoneer.  On Nov. 5, 1954, he married Betty Joann Myers in Great Bend, Ks.  They were married for 53 years before her death May 13, 2007.

Flip was employed by Hahner, Foreman and Cale for many years as a heavy equipment operator and helped build the senior high rise living facility, Barton County Community College and numerous other local facilities.  He joined Midwest Energy in the late 1970s and was a tree-cutting foreman. He retired in the early 1990s.

Going by the moniker “Capt. P. Hoss – the fishes’ friend,” Flip enjoyed fishing and camping at Lake Wilson with his family and friends, including longtime friends Eugene Eckert and Keith Holmes, both deceased.

He was a life-long member of Prince of Peace Parish. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Prince of Peace Parish Education Fund.

Flip was a loving husband and father, who will always be remembered for his spirit of caring and giving, and his sense of humor.

Survivors include three children Jolene Scholl and her husband Jim of Cudjoe Key, Fla., Catherine Crews and her husband Brad of Overland Park, and Charles Hoss and his wife Becky of Lenexa; seven grandchildren, Kent, Katlyn, Erika, Emily, Meagan, Margo and Leah; one brother, Paul Hoss of Great Bend, two sisters, Angie Geil of Liberty, Mo., and Agnes Berryhill of Miss.; brothers-in-laws, Jim Myers and his wife Alfreda and Dave Myers and his wife Delores of Hays; sisters-in-law, Marie Hoss of Claflin and Dolly Hoss of Dallas, lifelong friend Maurice Bauer of Houston, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vigil service and Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 11, 2013 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. Father Ted Stoecklein will be celebrant.  Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Seward. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, at Bryant Funeral Home. Currently a Chemistry Instructor at Barton Community College, Mr. Causey was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 2007coming from Tennessee. He had previously taught at the University of Memphis and Harding Academy of Memphis. Prior to that, he had worked for FedEx Express as an Aircraft Market Specialist and a Crew Resource Specialist and Analyst.

A member of Church of Christ, Great Bend, Guy Causey had a strong faith in his church and his students. He accompanied youth from his church to Ghana several times on mission trips. He had a profound spiritual relationship with his God and a deep commitment to follow in the Lord’s footsteps of serving mankind. Guy also enjoyed exercising, biking, and hiking. He was a dedicated and well respected faculty member of Barton Community College. Guy was able to teach Chemistry in a way that reached all his students. Guy’s immediate family was his beloved Labradors, Tal and Barney and his cat, Midnight. He treated them like his children, because they were. He leaves behind many colleagues and friends that remember humorous and enlightening stories of his life experiences. Guy had a wonderful sense of humor and will be missed by many.

Sister Mary Ann Klein OP

Deceased: Sister Mary Ann Klein OP

Sister Mary Ann Klein (Sister Mary James), 88, died Friday, October 4, 2013, in the Catholic Care Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Born December 4, 1924, in Fowler, Kansas, Sister Mary Ann was the daughter of the late Jacob and Anna Hoffman Klein. She entered the Dominican Sisters in Great Bend on March 17, 1940, and pronounced her first vows August 13, 1943. She celebrated seventy years of religious profession earlier this year.

Sister Mary Ann began her ministerial life as a teacher in parochial elementary schools in Odin, Willowdale, La Crosse, and Clonmel, Kansas. In 1951 she began her studies in nursing and ministered in St. Rose Hospital, Great Bend, and St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She served as a missionary in health ministry in the Sokoto Prefecture in Nigeria in the 1960s. After two years of preparation for her ministry of teaching nurses, she taught in the Dominican School of Nursing and the Associate Nursing Program Barton County Community College, both in Great Bend. She was also the clinical supervisor and a nursing instructor in the Beloit AVTS. After 1983 she served in the convent infirmary in Great Bend for almost a decade. After retiring from nursing she ministered to the elderly, homebound, and those in hospitals in Sacred Heart Parish in Larned, KS. Her last ministry was as the archivist for the Dominican Sisters in Great Bend.

Sister Mary Ann Klein is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace religious community and one sister, Jean Pfeiffer of Dodge City, KS.

The cremains of Sister Mary Ann will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Friday, October 11, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 12, with Rev. Anselm Eke MSP as presider. A wake service will be held Friday, October 11, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. Inurnment will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent (see chapel address above).
