Nancy Louise (Helsel) Strain

GREAT BEND – Nancy Louise (Helsel) Strain passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019 in Wichita, Kan. with her family by her side. She was 66 years old. Nancy was born to Dale and Louise (Corn) Helsel on Feb. 16, 1953, in Great Bend, Kan.

Nancy was a loving mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend. Her favorite things in life were her grandkids and of course Bingo. She will be dearly missed by all.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Megan (Brenton) Heine, Great Bend, Kan.; stepmother, Rosina Helsel, Great Bend, Kan.; siblings, Michael Wilson, Wichita, Kan., Jerry Helsel, Topeka, Kan., Gerry (Leslie) Helsel, Great Bend, Kan., and Debra (Marty) Shank, Great Bend, Kan., grandchildren, Bradley Heine and Paige Heine, both of Great Bend, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents and her three siblings, Terry Momyer, Mike Helsel, and Pat Davidson.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 8, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Wade Russell presiding. Inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery North. Memorials are suggested to the Nancy Strain Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

June Marie Yahne

GREAT BEND – June Marie Yahne, 79, passed away November 3, 2019, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born on June 5, 1940 at Great Bend, to Wesley & Thelma (Reineck) Skinner. She married Ralph Yahne on September 21, 1957, at Great Bend. He survives.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, June was a homemaker. She enjoyed camping and fishing but especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include, her husband Ralph of the home; two sons, Gary Yahne of Olmitz and William Yahne of Great Bend; one daughter, Nanette Yahne of Colony, TX; two sisters, Carol Larkin and husband Bill of Enid, OK, and Ersel Tiede of Great Bend; and one grandson, Brian Keen. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and three sisters.

There will be no visitation at this time and services will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the June Yahne Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Brenda LeAnn Billinger

GREAT BEND – Brenda LeAnn Billinger, 61, passed away November 3, 2019, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. She was born May 5, 1958, at Colby to William Carson & Thelma (Rose) Ayers. She married Stan Billinger August 20, 1977, at Hill City. He survives.

Coming from Hill City in 1986, Brenda was a Great Bend resident. She was a member of Christian Mother’s and Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church. She enjoyed cooking and baking and loved animals. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include, husband Stan Billinger of the home; three sons, Brian Billinger of Newton, Brad Billinger of Canton and Brent Billinger of Newton; one daughter, Brandi Billinger of Great Bend; her mother, Thelma Jarret; one brother, Jay Ayers and wife Lana of Palco; one sister, Linda Ayers of McPherson; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, William Carson Ayers; four brothers, Jack Ayers, Jerry Ayers, Larry Ayers, and Kenny Ayers; and two sisters, Shirley Griggs and Louise Ayers.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 8, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home with Father Louis Dinh Hoang presiding. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date in Hill City. Memorials are suggested to the Grandchildren’s Education Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Maurice Charles Schwartz

GREAT BEND – Maurice Charles Schwartz, 92, passed away November 1, 2019, after battling cancer for three years, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born on April 17, 1927, at St. Leo, Kansas to William & Martha (Blasi) Schwartz. He married Bernita Marie Pfeifer July 29, 1947 at Liebenthal.  She died March 22, 2012.

A Great Bend resident for most of his life, Maurice grew up in St. Leo, Kansas. He was a carpenter for Morrison Construction for 21 years, and was self-employed for many years after he left Morrison Construction. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and was very strong in his faith. He was also a member of the VFW Post #3111 and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was considered a master carpenter, building several houses and also built a race car and boat.

He is survived by seven sons, Robert Schwartz and wife Barbara of Great Bend, Duane Schwartz of Grand Island, NE, Danny Schwartz and wife Stacy of Great Bend, Bill Schwartz and wife Jaynee of Great Bend, Kenny Schwartz and wife Dawn of Wichita, Kevin Schwartz of Great Bend and Keith Schwartz and wife Kay of Salina; three daughters, Kathy Pedigo and husband Don of Great Bend, Elaine Miller and husband Craig of McPherson, and Pam Stegman and husband Tom of Yukon, OK; one sister, Edith Keeler of Great Bend; 29 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 9 step great grandchildren; and 4 step great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, B. Marie Schwartz; one daughter in law, Diane Schwartz; two brothers, Rheinard Schwartz and Arthur Schwartz; four sisters, Rosalynn Henning, Lydia Weber, Sally Gregg, and Marcelline Suchy; and two great grandchildren, Matthew Kearn and Faith Hitts.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday, November 4, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 5, 2019, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore presiding. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to Prince of Peace Parish, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Viann Brougher

HUTCHINSON – Viann Brougher, 84, went to be with the Lord October 31, 2019, passing away at Brookdale Assisted Living in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born July 23, 1935, to parents Jesse “Duke” and Vi (Radke) Pinkston in Larned, Kansas.

She attended Radium schools where she met and later married the love of her life, Joe Brougher on March 21, 1935. She worked alongside him with the family farming business and later as co-owner of Brougher Oil and Mohawk Drilling Companies in Great Bend.  He died on July 16, 2016.

Upon retirement, she earned her Real Estate license and became a successful realtor for Coldwell Banker in Garden City, earning many awards and achievements, including the Million Dollar Club Award multiple times. She continued her real estate passion with Weigand Realtors in Hutchinson for a time.

She and Joe spent many years traveling and enjoying adventures with each other, family and many friends. She was an avid K-State fan, active member of the Highland Golf Club in Hutchinson and worshiped at the Church of the Nazarene in Hutchinson.  Viann was a member of the Garden City Board of Realtors, serving as Past President, and served the community of Garden City as an Ambassador of the Chamber of Commerce.

She is survived by three daughters, Toni Rice of Great Bend, Kansas, Vicki Brown and husband Bob of Jasper, Georgia, and Sherri Massey and husband Randy of Manhattan, Kansas; 9 grandchildren, Rocky Seybert, Tim Seybert, Andi Rice, Jessica Patzell, Matt Brown, Nicole Brown, Adam Massey, Sam Massey and Hanna Massey; and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe; daughter, Patti Patzell; her parents; and one brother.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, November 3, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Monday, November 4, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Chaplain Randall Turner presiding. Interment will follow in the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Kindred Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Corylss Kay Rowe

Corylss Kay “Corky” Rowe

Graveside services for Corlyss Rowe will be held on Friday, November 1, 2019, at 3:30 p.m., at the Great Bend Cemetery.

Corlyss died on October 29, 2019, in Hays, Kansas.

She was born on January 14, 1940 to V.C. and Amelia Rowe.

Corylss attended Hoisington Public Schools, graduating in the class of 1958 from Hoisington High School.

After high school she attended the K.U. Medical Center, receiving certification in Licensed Practical Nursing.

Corlyss survived by her sister, Gwen Price, Enid, Oklahoma; her niece, Laurie Price and her children, Morgan Blodgett and Cooper Blodgett; her nephew, Lance Price (Jill) and their children, Paige and Caroline. She was preceded in death by her parents, V.C. and Amelia Rowe; and her brother-in-law, Sherm Price.

Mary Ann Hammon

GREAT BEND – Mary Ann Hammon, 86, passed away October 29, 2019, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born December 31, 1932, at Fairfax, South Dakota to Ivan & Mamie (Monroe) Stevenson. She married Duane Hammon on March 21, 1953 in South Dakota. He survives.

Coming from Salina in 1984, Mary was a Great Bend resident. She liked quilting, knitting, ceramics, cooking, bird houses and working on word puzzles. She especially liked spending time with her family.

Survivors include, her husband, Duane of the home; one daughter, Debra Thompson and husband David of Great Bend; one brother, Donald Stevenson and wife Joyce of Wahpeton, ND; one sister, Jean Pirner of Wagner, SD; four grandchildren, Mindi Beahm and husband David, Travis Thompson and wife Andrea, Dustin Thompson and wife Angela, and Lance Hammon; seven great grandchildren, Bennett, Thompson and Emerson Beahm; Emma and Tristan Thompson; Kyrah Schnoebelen and Kaylee Thompson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry Hammon; two brothers, Vernon Stevenson and an infant brother; and one sister, Betty Carlson.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday, November 1, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2019, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend with Pastor Seong Lee. Joyce Elaine White

Dateline – Hoisington

Joyce Elaine White, 78, died October 27, 2019, at Morton County Senior Living, Elkhart, Kansas.  She was born September 10, 1941, in Great Bend, the daughter of Joe T. and Emma J. (Reif) Prosser.  She graduated from Hoisington High School, received her bachelor’s from Marymount College in Salina and later earned her masters from Fort Hays State University.

A longtime resident of Hoisington, she was an elementary school teacher, teaching primarily Kindergarten and 3rd Grade, and was also a reading specialist.  Mrs. White taught in Salina, France, Schilling Air Force Base, Colorado, Odin, and retired in 2006 from Hoisington USD 431.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society.  She was also a member of the KNEA and the NEA. She enjoyed reading and traveling in her spare time, but most of all supporting her grandchildren in their activities.

On January 18th, 1964, she married Jimmy Lee White. He preceded her in death on June 16, 2016.

Survivors include; two sons, Brian White of Hoisington, Blaine White and wife Jenn of Omaha, Arkansas; daughter, Jina Arellano and husband Joseph of Garden City; two brothers, Jim Prosser of Springfield, Missouri and Steve Prosser of Wichita; eight sisters, Bonnie Schremmer and husband Bill of Hoisington, Lois McClain and husband Jerald of Goddard, Celeste Meitner and husband Jim of Hoisington, Rita Solorio and husband Lou of Emporia, Nona Robinson and husband Bob of Marion, Nancy Yackshaw of Wichita, Patti Myers and husband David of Borger, Texas, and Annie Holmes and husband Jon of Shawnee; 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant daughter, Jane Marie White; brother, Allen Prosser, and a sister, Mary Jane Prosser.

Friends may call 12 noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. with Vigil and Rosary to begin at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Thursday, October 31, 2019, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Anselm Eke, MSP.  Burial will follow in St. John Church Cemetery, Hoisington.

Ann Jane Schenk

Ann Jane “Annie” Schenk, 60, entered the gates of heaven with her beloved husband of 40 years, Richard, passing away October 20, 2019, in Angel Fire, NM.  Annie was born March 3, 1959, at Great Bend, to Robert “Bob” and Lois (Ehly) Linsner.  Annie married Richard Schenk August 18, 1979, in Olmitz, Kansas.

Annie, a Great Bend resident since 1988, moving from Olmitz, and growing up in Hoisington, was a homemaker and “Mother” to everyone she met.  She was a member of Prince Peace of Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, and P.E.O, holding many leadership positions.  Annie served her Church and community, being involved with 100 People Who Care Barton County and the Holy Family School Grandfriend program.  Annie enjoyed playing cards and Bunco, gardening, and canning peaches and pickles.

In the tradition of German Catholic weddings, Rick and Annie could not resist leading the Grand March, being called on more than one could count.  They both loved spending time at their cabin at Kanopolis Lake, where they served on the Yankee Run HOA board, traveling, especially taking trips with five other couples, making cherished memories for many years, and spending time with their grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Allyce Hansford and husband Michael of Prairie Village, Amanda Pfannenstiel of Hays, and Briana Schenk of Russell; two grandchildren, Kolter Pfannenstiel and Kimber Pfannenstiel; four brothers, Larry Linsner and wife Charlotte of Walker, Jim Linsner and wife Shiela of Wichita, Joe Linsner of Great Bend, and Patrick Linsner of Great Bend; two sisters, Pam Redetzke and husband Norman of Salina, and Rhonda Herman and husband Don of Wichita; and one sister-in-law, Margie Linsner of Wichita.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Lois Linsner; one brother, Robert “Bobby” Linsner, Jr.

Richard Joseph Schenk

Richard Joseph “Rick” Schenk, 65, entered the gates of heaven with his beloved wife of 40 years, Annie, passing away October 20, 2019, in Angel Fire, NM.  Rick was born Apr. 14, 1954 at Great Bend, to Bernard Richard and Mary Jo (Riedel) Schenk.  Rick married Ann Jane “Annie” Linsner Aug. 18, 1979, at Olmitz, Kansas.

Rick, a resident of Great Bend since 1988 moving from Olmitz, was the C.E.O. of Community Bank of the Midwest.  Rick was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Council #2100, Olmitz, EAA flight club, Young Eagles Association and enjoyed men’s card group.

Rick served his Church and community, being involved with 100 People Who Care Barton County, Barton County Fair Board, serving as treasurer for more than 20 years, and the Holy Family School Grandfriend program.  Rick enjoyed flying his Piper Commanche and was a volunteer pilot for Angel Flights. He was considered a “jack of all trades” and a master of “Dad jokes” and pranks.
