OBITUARY INFORMATION

Thelia Belle Moore Brack was born December 13, 1921 on a farm southeast of Dundee, KS to Robert Warren and Hellena Unruh Moore.

She attended Barton County rural school, graduated from Pawnee Rock High School. Attended Fort Hays Teachers College, and taught in rural schools in Barton County for 5 years.

She was united in marriage to Vernell F. (Shorty) Brack of Otis, July 25, 1945, at the Pawnee Rock New Jerusalem Church. He passed away November 12, 1996. To this union three children were born, Brian Jay and his wife Linda Brack of Otis, KS, Charlotte Ann Hett, Boston, MA, and Cherie Rae Bahr, Great Bend, KS.

She was a homemaker until 1958 when she became a bookkeeper at Fred Brack Motor Co. until it closed in 1966. Thelia was instrumental in starting a public library in Otis and supported it until 2007 when she left Otis. She was a 4-H Project Leader, Community Leader of Rush County 4-H and served on the Rush County Fair Board. She was active in the Otis United Methodist Church for 62 years, teaching Sunday School, serving on various church boards and circles, and participating many years in the area district Methodist meetings and retreats and UMW. She was a 60 year old member of the VFW, life member of Georlitz-Schlegel VFW, Ladies Auxiliary until its disbandment, life member of Ex-POW Chapter of Western, KS, and life member of DAV, Great Bend. She served on South West Kansas Area on Aging board, Sub-district and County council of Aging, served 2 terms on CKLS Board and various other community activities in the Otis and Rush County area. She was also a member of the Senior Center of Otis. She took it upon herself to be the “unofficial’ welcome wagon to any new people of Otis, greeting them with a smile, handshake and some homemade goodies. She always seemed to be the go to person whenever something happened in town, whether it be someone having a medical emergency, no electricity in town from a blizzard and opening her home for meals to the townspeople because we had a gas heat and stove, or having the quilting bee or Auxiliary Rag Tearing group. She was a caretaker to many and a friend to all. All while running a family of 5 and maintaining a large garden and canning every season. She was also a successful Avon saleslady for over 27 years.

After moving to Great Bend in September 2007, she became a member of the First Methodist Church, Knight Pitts Circle, Silver Cougar Booster Club and active reader of as many books as she could before her eyesight gave out.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Kimberly and Ki Gamble, Greensburg, KS, Kelly and Wendy Brack, Great Bend, KS, Ben Hett, Topeka, KS, Melanie and Barry Brant, Andover, KS, J.J. and April Brack, Plainville, KS, Joey and Anita Bahr, Great Bend, KS, and Camie and Kevin Hlavaty, Olmitz, KS. Eleven great grandchildren, Kasey and Katelynn Gamble, Greensburg, Jayce and Koy Brack, Great Bend, Aubrie and Blaine Brant, Andover, Ava, Vincent and Ruby Brack, Plainville, Jenna Hlavaty, Olmitz.

One sister, Arvella and John Gutman, Brandon, Vermont, Sister-in-law Mary Louise and Tom Shook, Liberal, sister-in-law Lois Brack, Lakewood, CO, and brother-in-law Al Kroeker, Great Bend, KS, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernell F. (Shorty), son-in-law, Ron Bahr, great grandson Tanner Hlavaty, and sister, Eldean Kroeker and brothers-in-law, Elman Brack, and Gary Brack.

DANIEL  W.  CATES 

Daniel W. Cates, age 47 years, of Blue Springs, Missouri and a native of Great Bend,Kansas, passed away on Monday morning, August 5, 2013 at Indian Meadows HealthcareCenter in Overland Park, Kansas after a lengthy illness.  Dan was born on December 8, 1965 atGreat Bend, Kansas to Dale Orson and Beverly K. (Drennon) Cates. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1984, and went on to attend Barton Community College at Great Bend for two years.  He was active with youth through the Hoisington Wrestling Club in Hoisington, Kansasduring this time.  Dan then transferred to Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas, where he attained his Bachelors Degree in Sports Administration with Honors.  Dan received baseball scholarships from both Barton Community College and Tabor College.  He then went on to attain his Masters Degree in Sports Administration with Honors at Fort Hays State University in Hays,Kansas.  He was united in marriage to Jennifer B. Thouvenell on April 24, 1993 at Great Bend,Kansas.  Dan loved working with kids through sports, particularly baseball, which was his passion.  He coached Little League Baseball for the past six years, and throughout his life was active in baseball, football, wrestling, hunting, archery, fishing, NASCAR and dirt track racing.  Dan and Jennifer moved to Blue Springs, Missouri in 1997.  Dan was an Information Technology Business Analyst, employed by DST Systems, Inc. of Kansas City, Missouri for fifteen years.  He was also a member of the Living Stones Community Church at Blue Springs, Missouri.

Survivors include his wife, Jennifer B. Cates and his two sons, Ryan Dale Cates and Tyler William Cates of Blue Springs, Missouri; his mother, Beverly K. (Drennon) Cates of Great Bend, Kansas and his maternal grandmother, Grace Drennon of Great Bend, Kansas.  Dan was preceded in death by his father, Dale O. Cates on May 10, 2009, his paternal grandparents (V.W. and Aldean Cates), and his maternal grandfather (Daniel Drennon).

Norma Lea Curry Shafer-Yancey

picLAWRENCE — Surrounded by her four children at her home, Norma Lea Curry Shafer-Yancey, 84, peacefully passed away on May 4th. Born on Christmas Day in 1928, to Leslie and Glenda Curry in Burlington, Wash., Norma Lea Curry and her family moved to Great Bend, before her second birthday. Shortly after her graduation from high school, Norma met Ted Shafer at a picnic dance. They were married in 1948, and had four children. Shafer’s position with a national retail company required the family to move frequently, including to such states as Texas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Pennsylvania.

Six years after Shafer’s passing in 1983, Norma married Harley Yancey in Bentonville, Ark. The couple lived in Bella Vista, Ark., until Yancey’s passing in 2002. Norma then moved to Lawrence to be closer to two of her children.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings—Dean Curry, Robert Curry, and JoAnn Curry Crabb. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Melinda Huston and her husband, John, of Lawrence, Kevin Shafer and his wife, Dori, of Pleasant Hill, Calif., Stu Shafer and his wife, Patti, of Oskaloosa, and Karen Johnson and her husband, Don, of Iowa City, Iowa. She had 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are requested to Visiting Nurses/Hospice of Lawrence, in care of the funeral home. Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Eulah Belle Pieschl

Rush Center- Eulah Belle Pieschl,78, died August 5, 2013, at the Hays Medical Center.

She was born Janurary 8, 1935 in Newton, the daughter of Carl and Elizabeth Ratzlaff Holle. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the UMW all of Rozel. She was past member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Ash Valley, and was a school teacher in her earlier years at Mt. Hope, Hutchinson and Larned.

On December 22, 1963 she married James W. Pieschl in Hesston, KS. He survives.

Survivors Include: three sons, Kevin Pieschl, Garfield, Kyle Pieschl, Great Bend, and Marc Pieschl, Rush Center. One daughter Marcia Orgish, Cottonwood Idaho, One Brother Joe Holle, California, and three granddaughters, Ida and Madelyn Pieschl, Elizabeth Orgish.

Funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday August 9,2013 at the Rozel United Methodist Church with Pastor Brad McCoy presiding. Visitation will be from 9 am to 8 pm Wednesday and Thursday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Great Bend- Gail Evan Wells, 65 died August 3, 2013 at the Hays Medical Center, Hays KS.

He was born November 12, 1947, in Denver Colorado, the son of Dwight and Idel Vanbeber Wells. A Lifetime area resident, he was a Laborer.

On December 9, 2006 he Married Susan Hughes in Larned, Kansas, she survives.

Other Survivors include: two step sons, James Philo and wife Gina, Larned, Sheldon Adams and wife Amber, Yuma AZ. One brother, Brian D. Wells, Kansas City Mo., five Step Grand Children and Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Dwight Wells Jr.

Larned – Theo Dale Smith, 97, died July 29, 2013, at Diversicare of Larned. He was born February 10, 1916, in Frizell, the son of Theo D. and Goldia McComb Smith. He was retired from the Missouri Pacific Railroad as the agent/telegrapher at Argonia, Freeport, Larned, Hutchinson and Iola.

He attended the First Christian Church in Moran. He served in the United States Navy.

On March 6, 1938, he married Faye I Weast at Moran. She passed away May 14, 1991. On February 4, 1994, he married Jennieve E. Smith at Ponca City, Oklahoma. She passed away November 2, 1999.

Survivors include: three sons, Theo G. (Linda), Logandale, Nevada, Dr. Terry D. (Jill) and Clay G. (Judy), both of Larned; a daughter, Bonita (Jerry) Meyer, Belpre; two brothers, Quentin Thorne, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ivan, El Dorado; a sister, Pearlie (Smith) Page, El Dorado; eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Philip Samuel, Gale Elton and Star Vance.

Graveside service will be held at 3p.m. Friday at the Moran City Cemetery, Moran, Kansas, with Pastor Bill La Porte presiding. Visitation will be from 9a.m. to 8p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.
