Virgil married Linda Croft May 16, 1952 at New Mexico. She survives.

Mr. Maser was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1958 coming from Hutchinson, KS.

He was a farmer and previously managed the Senate Hotel. He had also owned and operated Virgos Café, Granny’s Kitchen, Star Lite Supper Club and Jayhawk Cafe.

He had also been a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Isis Shrine, and was inducted into the Kansas Bowling Hall of Fame in April 2008.

She then married Harold Schenk December 14, 1996 at Olmitz, KS. He survives.

A long time Great Bend resident, Jean owned and operated a beauty salon.

Jean was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and the American Legion Argonne Post 180 Auxiliary, all of Great Bend. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Arizona, Texas, and frequent trips to various casinos.

With her family by her side, Linda Sue (Cooper) Satterlee, age 64, of rural Larned,Kansas and formerly of Great Bend and Macksville, Kansas, went to see her Lord and Savior on Monday evening, July 22, 2013 at the Diversicare Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center inLarned, Kansas after a lengthy illness. She was born October 25, 1948 in Independence, Iowa to Albert M. and Edna (Baxter) Cooper. Linda graduated from Great Bend High School in 1966, after which she attended the Great Bend Academy of Beauty.  She was united in marriage to Rodney D. Satterlee on February 24, 1967 in Macksville, Kansas.  The couple lived in Gaeta,Italy, Charleston, South Carolina, and Hutchinson, Kansas prior to moving to Macksville, Kansas, where they lived for around 30 years. They moved to rural Larned (formerly Zook, Kansas) in 2001.  Linda worked  as a beautician at Mary Jo’s Beauty Shop in Macksville for eight years and then had her own shop “The Hair Stable” in Macksville for ten years, was the Macksville City Clerk for nine years, and also as an EMT and later as a secretary/office manager at Larned Sand & Gravel for nine years. She also worked briefly for Pamida and as Desk Clerk at the Rodeway Inn, both of Larned.  Beginning as a child and continuing through adulthood, Linda played the piano at all churches she attended.  She was a member of the Eden Valley Church of the Brethren and enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, music (especially playing the piano), cooking, and shopping. Linda will be remembered by her friends and family as a kind, giving, and compassionate person. She shared God’s word and love with anyone who would listen and was a friend to many. Linda had a special place in her heart for her chemo buddies and staff at the Great Bend Regional Medical Center and Cancer Center.

Linda is survived by her husband, Rodney D. Satterlee of rural Larned (Zook), Kansas; one son, Troy (and his wife, Patricia “Trish”) Satterlee of Hoisington, Kansas; one daughter, Trey Satterlee of McPherson, Kansas; four grandchildren: Jordan and Jacob Satterlee and Naomi and Nathan Cartmell; sister, Andra Bird and her husband Gary of Larned. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 26, 2013 at the Eden ValleyChurch of the Brethren, 502 NW 60th Street (Eden Valley Road), St. John, Kansas with Pastor Tom Harrison officiating.  Inurnment will be held at a later date.  It was Linda’s wishes that her body be cremated, and there will be no viewing or visitation. The family suggests that memorials may be designated to the Eden Valley Church of the Brethren at St. John, Kansas.  Online condolences may be left and a complete obituary notice may be viewed athttps://www.charterfunerals.com/obituary/chgb.

Married Cindy Meyer February 14, 1982 at Laverne’s Marriage Parlor, Miami, Oklahoma. 

He was a driller and roughneck for Mohawk Drilling, Pickrell Drilling, and White and Ellis Drilling; was a corrections officer for Larned Mental Health Correctional Facility; and retired as a mental health technician for Larned State Hospital.

Mr. Lee was a long time Great Bend, Kansas resident.

He was a veteran of both the United States Navy and United States Army.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Diana Grace Trimmer

Diana Grace Trimmer age 52, passed away July 22, 2013 at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. She was born February 7, 1961 at St Rose Hospital in Great Bend the daughter of Hazel Grace Johnson and Joseph Delaine Levingston. The oldest of four siblings, Diana grew up in Pawnee Rock and attended Pawnee Rock High School.  She married John Dixon Trimmer June 10, 1976. They adopted 12 children and lived in the rural Great Bend area. As a wife, mother, sister, and advocate, Diana dedicated her life to helping children in need, family, and friends.

She is survived by husband John; children Joseph, JoePaul, Timothy, Melissa, Heather, Tonya, Joshua, Audrey, Christina, Virginia, Ian, and Mathew; 14 grandchildren; parents Hazel Grace and Delaine; sisters Sherry Doonan and Susan Lippert; brother Robert Levingston; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on West 10th with Pastor Jim Martin presiding. Inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery North. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Dr. William Rush Brenner

Brenner, William Photo Larned – Dr. William Rush Brenner, MD, 98 passed away July 19, 2013 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned.

Dr. W. R. Brenner, MD was born May 22, 1915 in McCracken, the son of William Albert and Rose Sweeney Brenner of Bazine, KS.

He was born and raised in Rush County, KS. He attended Creighton University Medical School where he received his MD degree in 1939. Following his Residency he was commissioned in the US Army Corps as a Flight Surgeon in 1940; and following training, was assigned to the 35th Pursuit Group which was stationed in the Philippines at the time of the war outbreak in December of 1941. Bill was captured by the Japanese in April, 1942, and after surviving the Bataan Death March, remained a prisoner of war in the Philippines and Japan until liberated by US forces in 1945. He was promoted to the rank of Major and was awarded the Bronze Star medal for heroic actions performed while a POW. His wife Josephine and their son remained in the San Francisco area throughout the war. Their family story during the war is chronicled in the book by Linda McCaffery entitled I’M PRAYING VERY HARD FOR YOU.

Bill and Jo took up residence in Larned following the end of the war and his subsequent repatriation. There he practiced family medicine and general surgery for the next 30 years. During that time, they raised 6 children and became mainstays of the community. Following retirement from the medical profession in 1978, he served on the Larned City Council for 10 years and as mayor of Larned for 6 years. He belonged to various professional societies and civic organizations throughout his lifetime including the American Medical Association, Kansas Medical Society, Pawnee County Medical Society, and was a Fellow in the College of General Practice. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Commander of the Western Kansas chapter of the American EX-POWs. In retirement, he remained very active in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the local community. Until he passed away, Bill was the National Physician for the Ex-Prisoners of Bataan and Corregidor.

He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Mary Josephine McGowan, a son Stephen James, two brothers, Leo and Edward, and one sister Irene Antenen. Bill and Jo’s surviving children are William Rush Brenner, Jr. of Williamsburg, VA, Robert John Brenner of Wichita, KS, Barbara Ellen Polston of Kansas City, MO, Anne Margaret Armstrong of Fairbanks, AK, and Katherine Josephine Brenner of Eugene, OR. He also has eleven grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

He is also survived by his second wife, Carlotta Chacon; and two brothers, Ben Brenner of Beeler, KS, and Harold Brenner of Midland, TX; and one sister, Mildred Kuhlman of Oakley, KS.

Vigil Service will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday and 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Nadine H. Reed

Larned – Nadine H. Reed, 93, died July 18, 2013, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend.

She was born March 5, 1920 at Kincaid, the daughter of Harry and Bertha Foster. A longtime area resident, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two sons, Worth M. Reed, Kingman, Dayle Reed and wife Carole, Branson, Missouri; three daughters, Barbara Hefner and husband Dr. Andy, Great Bend, Beverly Roots and husband Phil, Kingman, Betty Reed, Derby; a brother, Elvin Foster, Iola; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Larned Cemetery, Larned, with Pastor Mark Slattery presiding. Beckwith Mortuary Box 477, Larned, Ks 67550 is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon E. Koehn

Larned- Vernon E. Koehn, 82, died July 16, 2013 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

He was born September 21, 1930, at Great Bend, the son of Henry and Virginia Unruh Koehn. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer and worked at the Pawnee County COOP. He was the bicycle repairman for the whole neighborhood and his adopted grandchildren and loved to hunt and fish.

He was of the Christian faith. He served in the United States Army and was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, D.A.V. and Military Order of the Cooties.

On February 19, 1954, he married Marie H. Kecker at Hulbert, Michigan. She passed away August 29, 2007.

Survivors include: two sons, Daniel, Great Bend, Steve, Larned; a daughter, Lynette Lewis, Larned; a brother, Harold Koehn, Phoenix, Arizona; a sister, Velma Beeler, Hutchinson; seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Loretta Joan Koehn.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Pastor Dan Lundgren presiding.
