            Edna I. (Craig) Logan Francis, age 99 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, and formerly of Claflin,Kansas, passed away on Friday evening, May 17, 2013 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood,Kansas.  Edna was born on November 5, 1913 near Caldwell, Kansas to Homer Francis and Katie Elmira (Siebenthaler) Craig.  Edna graduated from Abbyville, Kansas High School in 1931, and was united in marriage to H. DeLos Logan on December 15, 1935 in Caldwell, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 27, 1957.  She later married Vaughn Francis on September 19, 1975 atClayton, New Mexico, and he preceded her in death on June 13, 1990.  Edna worked at G & D IGA Grocery in Claflin for several years.  She was a member of the Claflin United Methodist Church, the Order of Eastern Star, Rebekahs, and Royal Neighbors of America.  Throughout her life Edna loved reading, working crossword puzzles, fishing, and she bowled into her eighties, for which she received several trophies.  She took great joy in new births, whether in her family or not.

            Survivors include one son, Leslie D. (and his wife, Barbara) Logan of Claflin, Kansas; two daughters:  Janet K. (and her husband, Don) Nily of Great Bend, Kansas and E. Eileen (and her husband, Harold) Straub of Russell, Kansas; nine grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.  Edna was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, one brother (Keith Craig) and three sisters (Irma Mae Jones, Opal Crosslin, and Dessie Dunn).

            Funeral services will be held at 10:30 on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  Memorials may be designated to the Scholarship Endowment Fund at Claflin United MethodistChurch or Kans for Kids.  Online condolences may be left and a complete obituary notice may be viewed at https://www.charterfunerals.com/obituary/chgb.

Dorothy D. Fox

Dorothy FoxLarned – Dorothy D. Fox, 88, died May 16, 2013 at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita.

She was born October 12, 1924 at Muskegon, Michigan, the daughter of Ernest W. Goldsmith. A longtime area resident of Larned; she was a farmer’s wife, a Rosie Riveter for Boeing during WWII and worked in the Dietary Department at Larned State Hospital.

She attended the United Methodist Church, Larned.

On December 15, 1946 she married Walter Mac Fox in Wichita. He survives.

Other survivors include; three sons; Gary, Ottawa, Larry, Manhattan, and Maurice, Larned, four grandchildren, Eric, Larned, Chris, Salt Lake City UT, Bethany, Shawnee, Weston, Austin TX and three great grandchildren, Allen, Easton and Eli Fox, and a fourth grandchild is due this year.

She was preceded in death by; a daughter; Beth Ann Fox.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned with the Rev. Bethann Black presiding. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Married Victoria Kay Shoemaker March 9, 1965 at Newton, Kansas. 

He began working as a lineman in 1965 for Central Kansas Electric Cooperative, which then became Midwest Energy, Inc.  He climbed the ranks as serviceman, staking engineer and community representative, retiring from Midwest Energy in 2008 after forty-two years of service.

Mr. Berryman was a Great Bend, Kansas, resident since 1965 coming from Newton, Kansas.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, StoneRidge Golf Club, Golden Belt Community Foundation Board of Directors, Cougar Booster Club, Panther Booster Club, and 4th of July Committee.  He served on the board and was an ambassador for Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development, was co-chairman of the 3i Show in Great Bend, served on the Great Bend City Council, and was named Citizen of the Year in 2006.

Berscheidt, HelenBelpre – Helen R. Berscheidt, 94, died April 19, 2013 at the Halstead Health and Rehabilitation Center, Halstead.

She was born November 22, 1918 the daughter of Matt and Martha Heinke Maes. A lifetime area resident she was a Farmwife and an Occupational Therapist for the Larned State Hospital for 25 years.

She was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Belpre and the Zook Community EHU.

On February 4, 1941 she married John N. Berscheidt in Claflin. He passed away in 1974.

Survivors include; a son; Thomas Berscheidt, Great Bend, two daughters; Betty Meyers, Newton and Jayne Suiter, Edmond, OK, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; six brothers; Martin, Ben, Chris, Matt, John and Frank Maes; and four sisters; Mary Beste, Agnes Miller, Anna Wolking and Gertrude Walters, and a granddaughter Amy Lynn Suiter.

Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11th at the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belpre with Father Warren Stecklein and Father John Maes officiating. Garfield – Gerald L. Shuss, 88, died May 4, 2013, at Larned Health Care, Larned. He was born September 1, 1924 in Las Vegas, New Mexico, the son of John and Elizabeth R. Buhrer Shuss. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer/stockman.

He belonged to the Church of Christ and the Saddle Club, both of Larned, was a member of the Lions Club, and served on the Coop Board and Santa Fe Township board, all of Garfield.

Evelyn E. (Sooby) Galliart

Galliart resized pictureLarned – Evelyn E. (Sooby) Galliart, 88, died April 27, 2013 and the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

She was born February 26, 1925 in Larned the daughter of Ben H. Sooby Sr. and Edith (Hays) Sooby, She graduated from Larned High School in 1943. Evelyn married Glenn Galliart on August 8, 1942, at Jetmore. They farmed in the Zook community from 1943 to 1973, when they moved to Texas in order to follow Glenn’s work for Federal Crop Insurance. In 1991, Glenn and Evelyn moved to Colorado Springs, CO and then back to Larned, KS in 2003.

Evelyn attended many trade shows and flea markets in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas with husband Glenn and friend Bill Eilrich. She had two beloved dogs, Penny and Dusty, who traveled many miles to trade shows with them. After moving back to Larned, KS, Evelyn ran a curiosity shop as a hobby.

She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn Galliart, and one brother, Ben Sooby, Jr. Survivors include one brother, Dennis Sooby and wife Dolly of Lawrence, KS; two sons, Garvan Dale Galliart and Kerry Max Galliart and wife Donna Jane Galliart, both of Larned, Kansas; five grandchildren, Trevis K. Galliart, Timothy K. Galliart, Trista K. Brom, Kelly R. Galliart, and Kirk S. Galliart; and five great-grandchildren, Taylor Galliart, Tristen Galliart, Samuel Brom, McKenzie Galliart, and Tanner Galliart.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Cougar Booster Club. He was a Booster Club Hall of Fame member and raced circle track from the 1950’s to 1970’s.
