Ronald L. ClaphanRonald L. “Ronnie” Claphan, age 90, longtime resident of Dundee, Kansas, died Friday afternoon, March 22, 2013, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend, Kansas.  Mr. Claphan was born on November 26, 1922 in Van Buren, Arkansas, the son of Gerald Ewing and Irene Evidine (Davidson) Claphan.  He was a 1942 graduate of Nashville High School, Nashville,Kansas.  He owned a mechanic shop in Newton, Kansas.  He later moved to Dundee and worked at Dee Dove Buick/Olds/Cadillac in Great Bend for approximately ten years.  He then opened and operated Triangle Auto/Truck Repair in Dundee, Kansas, for over 40 years until his retirement in 1996.  He also co-owned the Dundee Gift Shop with his brother for many years at the same time he operated Triangle Auto/Truck Repair.  With his CB handle of “Sparky Sparkplug”, he was a member of the Lucky 7 CB Club.  He loved KU and Wichita Shocker sports, and ran the wrecker at the racetrack.  Known as the unofficial “Mayor of Dundee”, and with his “4-H roots”, he was a carpenter, farmer, and raised cattle, hogs, and rabbits.

On October 12, 1960, he married Fern Elizabeth Hunt in McPherson, Kansas.  She preceded him in death February 12, 2000.  On October 5, 2006, he married Ruth Matthews inGreat Bend, Kansas.

Survivors include:  his wife, Ruth Claphan, Dundee, Kansas; four sons, Darrell and his wife, Regina Claphan, Wichita, Kansas, Charles Claphan, Wichita, Kansas, Carl Claphan, Texarkana, Texas, and Tom Claphan, Great Bend, Kansas; two daughters, Ronalda and her husband, Roger Chastain, Hillsboro, Kansas, and Catherine and her husband, Lee McVey, Great Bend, Kansas; 17 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; and one brother, Junior Claphan.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Fern; five infant sons; one sister, Dorothy Nolan; and one brother, Garland Claphan .

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Grace CommunityChurch, 210 McKinley, Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Jay Beuoy and Pastor Don Paden officiating. Interment will be in the Dundee Valley Cemetery near Dundee, Kansas.  Visitation will be Monday, March 25, 2013, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Charter Funerals, Great Bend,Kansas.  Church visitation will be Tuesday, March 26, 2013, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at GraceCommunity Church Church, Great Bend, Kansas.  Memorials are suggested to the Ronald L. Lucille K. Fox

Fox, LucilleLarned – Lucille K. Fox, 96, died March 24, 2013 at the Edwards County Hospital, Kinsley, Kansas.

She was born March 18, 1917 at Ellinwood; the daughter of Henry and Gertrude Hermes. A lifetime area resident; Moving to Larned with her family while in grade school. She was a homemaker.

She graduated from Larned High School in 1935. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Altar Society, and was an Honorary Member of the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary, all of Larned.

On October 6, 1941 she married Robert C. Fox at Larned. He died March 16, 1997.

Survivors include; a daughter, Janet Skelton and husband Larry, Larned, five grandchildren; Julie Martel and husband Mike, Jason Skelton and wife Renae, both of Larned, Jill Lawson and husband Virgil, Sylvan Grove, Jared Skelton and wife Tisha, Larned, and Jan Alford and husband Robert, Ganado, TX, thirteen great-grandchildren, two sister-in-laws; Donna Hermes, Rose Hill, KS and Idell Hermes, Enid, OK and seven nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Warren Stecklein officiating. Vigil Service will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Robinson, Sherry-CroppedLarned – Sherry Lynn Robinson, 38, of Larned, was born April 4, 1974 and went to her heavenly home on March 21, 2013 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital.

She is survived by her parents, Donald Robinson, Larned and Linda Anderson (Roger), Inman; Four children all of the home, Brady Robinson, Tatiana and Jace Lawson, and Isabella Robinson; Brothers, Dale Robinson, Larned, Roy Robinson, Rozel, Sister, Jenessa Meadows, Hutchinson; Grandparents, Elora Robinson, Larned, Norman and Marie Roberson, Larned; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Sherry made many friends through her work as a CNA/CMA at Pawnee Valley Hospital and All Staff agency where she worked for many years. With her unwavering love for her children, she spent much time with them in 4H projects, motocross, and horses. She enjoyed her horses and has always been around them as well as family pets and numerous other farm animals through the years. Most of her spare time was spent outdoors with her gardening, the horses, and pets. In a life that ended too soon, Sherry was known for helping people whether they were family, friends, or the patients that were in her care. Many in the medical community throughout the state knew of her caring attention as she traveled to facilities through the All Staff agency.

The funeral will be held at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2013. Interment to follow at the Larned Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Beckwith Mortuary from 9a.m. to 8p.m. Saturday and 1p.m. to 8p.m. Sunday, with family present from 1 to 3p.m.

Betty Jo (Jody) Rader

Larned- Betty Jo (Jody) Rader, 82, died March 10, 2013 at Country Place Senior Living, Larned.

She was born January 29, 1931 in Greensburg, the daughter of Merle and Muriel Ratliff Kelly. Graduating from Greensburg High school in 1949, she was a doctor’s nurse for Doctors Cram, Blount, Brenner, Ewing and Smith

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was very active and served wherever the lord called her. She was an avid gardner and will be remembered for her beautiful flower gardens.

On August 7, 1949 she married Dorl Rader in Greensburg Kansas, where they enjoyed 63 years together. He survives.

Other survivors include: a daughter Jody Ann Schwanke and husband Kendall, Hesston; two sons, Kim and wife Vicky, Scott City, Bill and wife Richelle, Lee’s Summit Mo.; a sister Jerry Bender, Greensburg; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister Peggy Shuck, a brother Hal and a grandson Bryce Rader.

Funeral will be held 10 am Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Larned with Pastor Bethann Black presiding. Visitation will be from 9 am to 8 pm Monday and Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be at 2 pm at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Mullinville.

Marshall William Mumford

Great Bend – Marshall William Mumford, 91, died March 8, 2013, at the Cherry Village, Great Bend.

He was born September 10, 1921, in Atlanta, Ks. the son of James M. and Bonnie Goldie Robinson Mumford. Moving from McPherson in 1950, he was an Automotive Mechanic at O Connell Motors, Great Bend.

He was of the Methodist faith and served in the United States Army Air Corps.

He married Leona Maxine Soft and she preceded him in death.

Survivors include: a daughter, Lila Collins, Great Bend; a son, James Mumford, Great Bend; a grandson, John Glisson, Kansas City; a granddaughter, Crystal Mumford, Great Bend; and many great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Darrell and Merle Mumford.

As a young man, Glenn worked at Thies Packing and Meadowgold Dairy. He later owned several furniture stores in Great Bend and La Crosse. Even after retirement Glenn loved wheeling and dealing when he was not playing cards or Bingo.
