He was an iron ore miner in Michigan, the salt mine at Pawnee Rock, an electrician for Marlette Homes and Falcon Mobile Homes, and custodian at Barton County Court House.

Mr. Kurtz was a long-time Barton and Pawnee County resident.

He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, serving in New Guinea. 

He was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of the Jack Kreiger VFW Post, Larned.

Larned – Yvonne Pauline Vanderslice, 93, died March 5, 2013 at the Larned Healthcare Center.

She was born July 1, 1919 in Larned; the daughter of Rupert and Mary Gertrude Hoover Kirchgassner. A lifetime area resident she was a store clerk for various stores.

On January 26, 1954 she married Jake Vanderslice in Larned. He passed away November 28, 1999.

Survivors include; two brothers, Dale Kirchgassner and wife Barbara, Wever, Iowa and Marvin Kirchgassner, Larned; a nephew, Alan Kirchgassner, Florida; a niece, Linda Homolka, Ellsworth and her guardian and friend, Janell Michel.

She was preceded in death by; two brothers, Melvin Kirchgassner and Fred Kirchgassner.

Marjorie R. Keenan Vratil

Larned – Marjorie R. Keenan Vratil, 93, passed away on Feb. 20, 2012 at the Larned Healthcare Center where she had resided the past 10 years.

She was born on October 13, 1919 to James and Nellie Keenan who preceded in death as did her siblings, Harry Keenan and Blanche O’Connor. Marjorie grew up on a farm west of Seward and graduated H.S. from Radium. In 1938 she married her love Henry Vratil and they were able to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary together before he died in 1996. They had two children from that marriage who cherish her: Steve Vratil of Ft. Collins, Co. and Kay Gilchrist of Wiscasset, Maine. She also leaves her daughter in law Barbara Warner Vratil, Bill Gilchrist, grandchildren Troy Vratil of Kansas City, KS and Lori Powell of Parker, CO. Her grandson, Shad Allen Vratil also preceded her in death. She totally enjoyed her family including her 5 great grandchildren and loved seeing them.

Prior to 1969, she married Henry and farmed east of Larned and then they moved to the town of Larned. Marjorie started working at the Santa Fe Trail Center and after never having worked anywhere, she blossomed and became the gift shop manager. She retired from there after 20 years. She was a wonderful cook and her families and the crew at the Trail Center also got to enjoy the goodies she made. Marjorie was a quiet person but loved bowling, dancing and card games over the years.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, where her service will be held on Friday, March 1st at 10:00 a.m. with Father John Strasser officiating. Beckwith Mortuary is handling funeral arrangements and visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Antonio  M.  “Tony”  Guajardo

 

            Antonio M. “Tony” Guajardo, age 55 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away at his Great Bend home on Tuesday evening, February 19, 2013.  Antonio was born on December 11, 1957 at Devine, Texas to Juan and Maria (Munoz) Guajardo.  He graduated from Greeley West High Schoolin Greeley, Colorado, and lived most of his life in the Devine, Texas area until moving to Great Bendtwo years ago.  Tony was employed by Hertz Rent-a-Car and Smith Security in San Antonio, and since coming to Kansas was employed at the Kwik-Shop in Great Bend.  One of Tony’s hobbies was leatherworking.

Survivors include  two brothers: Salvador (and his wife, Mary) Guajardo of Greeley, Colorado and Jose (and his wife, Rita) Guajardo of Devine, Texas; four sisters: Lucy (and her husband, Ray) Ramirez of Waverly, Iowa, Virginia (and her husband, Ambrosio) Leora of San Antonio, Texas, Margarita (and her husband, Roy) Evans of Devine, Texas, and Rosa Burroughs of Great Bend, Kansas; his aunt, Cruz Rodriguez in Arizona; many nieces and nephews.  Antonio was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers (Juan and Cruz Guajardo) and one sister (Ester Deere).
