He worked for Electra-Log, Inc. as a Sales Engineer.

Mr. Matthews was a long-time Great Bend resident coming from Salina and Belpre, Kansas, recently moving to Olathe to be closer to family.

Mr. Matthews was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Matthews was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II in Northern France and central Europe.  He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster.

Mrs. Piland was a lifetime Great Bend, Kansas resident.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Great Bend and was board president of Kansas Association for Health Care Documentation Integrity.

After retirement, she enjoyed traveling, served as a school crossing guard, and worked at the Great Bend Rapture Center and Zoo.

J. W.  Crabtree

 

            J.W. Crabtree, age 74 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Monday evening, February 11, 2013 at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend after a brief illness.  J.W. was born on March 8, 1938 at Risco, Missouri to Lee and Frances (Gray) Crabtree.  He was united in marriage to Myrtle Florence “Flo” Goudie on December 14, 1957 at St. Louis, Missouri.  J.W. served in the U.S. Air Force and was a warehouse/terminal worker for Railway Express in St. Louis,Missouri prior to moving to Kansas.  He also worked in service stations for the majority of his life until health problems forced him to retire.  J.W. was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include a step-daughter, Audrey Power of Goose Bay, Newfoundland Labrador,Canada; a brother, Billy Joe (and his wife, Pearl) Crabtree of Centerville, Missouri, and a brother-in-law, John Melton of Great Bend.  J.W. was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Florence on January 1, 2004, four brothers (James, Junior, Steve, and Roy Crabtree) and three sisters (Virginia Fields, Lorene Watson Brown, and Pauline Melton).

He was a United States Navy veteran, serving during World War II. 

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus Council #862, Great Bend; Prefect of Holy Name Society, President of Sacred Heart School Board, DDP Chairman at Sacred Heart, Grand Knight for the Dodge City Knights of Columbus Council, served as lector and song leader on the Dodge City Parish Council and was a lector in Great Bend.  He was Boy Scout Troop Master at Sacred Heart in Dodge City for seven years. 

Mr. Elliott was in the auto business since 1951, and was the Pontiac, Chevrolet, Geo, Jeep, Eagle, and Volkswagen dealer in Great Bend from 1975 to 2009. He received the Master Sales Manager award.
